My father-in-law used to say it's not the day you sell it, it's the day it sinks. Because insurance is the only way you're getting any money for it.

356

u/drmojo90210 3d ago

It's also oddly cathartic knowing that the boat can't punish some other poor bastard. My family has owned a series of boats over the past 30 years. Whenever you sell a boat, the sense of relief you feel is tempered by the guilt you feel for the buyer who is inheriting all those problems. Good luck, buddy. You're gonna need it.

Years worth of income

8.2k

u/duhogman 3d ago

If you made $100k per year that would put you at half way to being a billionaire. Kinda hurts to put that into perspective.

3.6k

u/vkapadia 3d ago

Scale is a hell of a thing.

Another way to see the huge difference between $1m and $1b:

Let's say you made $1/second (which is an insanely good salary, $3600/hr), and you earned this not just business hours, but 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Earning $1m would take you less than 12 days. Earning $1b would take you over 31 years.

1.5k

u/NSA_Chatbot 3d ago

Another way to see the huge difference between $1m and $1b:

If you take a meterstick and put $0 on one end, and a Billion on the other end, a million dollars is at 1mm.

652

u/DaniTheLovebug 2d ago

Yup. To a billionaire, a millionaire is a rounding error.

885

u/canada11235813 3d ago

To put it in a more relatable scale, let’s say you have around $1,000 in your pocket.

Now I give you a dollar. How much do you have?

Around $1,000.

years of compound interest on my current savings, at a reasonable rate of 4%. that should keep me covered for an eternity or two.

EDIT: I guess when this reaches 5000 upvotes I can cash out?

1.3k

u/Addisonian_Z 2d ago

Any online calculators I quickly searched do not allow anywhere near 5000 years and I’m on my phone, not my computer.

The notecard math though says at 4% interest you will double your money every 18 years leading to you doubling it a little over 277 times.

If you have $1.00 now you will end around 1084 which puts you well above the 1080 theorized atoms in the known universe. Not a bad amount of cash.

410

u/ttircdj 2d ago

Never felt so rich with $8.37 in my savings account. Can’t even fathom what that to the 84th power would be.

5,000 Yersin mega yachts

Over $87M apiece. I'd sell 4,500, then use the remaining 500 as the largest fleet of yachts that offer free yacht adventures to those who help clean up the ocean on their trips. A couple hundred would be devoted to helping coral seed the reefs.

1.5k

u/digginroots 3d ago

Over $87M apiece.

Not once you flood the market like that.

429

u/Emetos 2d ago

You could drop the price to 100k. I imagine many relatively wealthy people would drop 100k for a yacht like that. Sell most of them, and you're close to $500 million

138

u/az116 2d ago

A yacht that costs $87 million, would cost almost $10 million dollars a year to run. A person who could only afford a $100k yacht, wouldn't even be able to afford to run it for a week, and in actuality wouldn't even be able to afford to take ownership of it.

I guess there are some retired people with $200 million+ that might find it hard to pass up a deal like that, but not 4,500 of them.

5000 tons of yttrium metal, valued at ~$30/kg, should theoretically be worth $136,077,720. However, only 8k-12k tons of yttrium oxide is produced annually, and from that only a few tons of yttrium metal is produced each year by reducing yttrium fluoride to a metal sponge with calcium magnesium alloy, so I'd imagine the spot price of yttrium metal would decrease significantly by flooding the market with 5k tons all at once.

However, if I sold it off gradually in my life time I bet I could still net at least ~$50 million (that's a guess, if someone wants to do the math to get the actual figure.) That's probably what I'd go with.

You now have 5000 yards of Iranian rials. 1 IRR is equal to $0.000024 USD

If they're all 1000 IRR notes, you now have 30891 bills, with a grand total of $733.97 USD.

$20 is $20, and likewise $733.97 is $733.97

Yeses. I can make anyone say yes to whatever I want 5000 times. I can walk up to someone and say "can you wire transfer all your money to me?" Or "can I get your car for 1 cent?" And have them just say yes.

Like to imagine them bound to a roll of yes tickets and everytime you use the yes you have to remove a ticket.

Possessing and re-selling 5,000 yachts sounds like way too much work to me. And you'd be holding on to so much liability in the meantime. Give me 5,000 Toyota Yaris(es). I think I could wholesale them for a fraction of the effort. At $5k each that would be a cool $25 mil.

u/Adetteray 2d ago

Or Yukon Denalis, sell them to middle class moms for like 15k they would buy them (you could probably do like 20-30k honestly and still sell them all super fast). More of a market than yachts and less liability while you have them.

Only if you dump all it into the economy at once. You could be sitting on 1 trillion times that much money, as long as you’re not spending it on vast amounts of shit it’s not gonna drive the cost of anything up.
