So I was pleasantly surprised. It’s very well done. It’s on Crunchyroll in Canada. It has more character development and more female characters than the original. The dubbed English version is quite good but they keep the Japanese names this time so Captain Avatar is now Captain Okita(which was his name in the original Japanese version).
One clever change is they explain an animation error in the original show - some of the enemy Gammilon leaders looked human. And later others had blue faces. This is explained in the new show that there are second class citizens who are from conquered civilizations and some look human. But only the pure Gamillon race is blue skinned.
I love the original series but the new one is very very good.
I pretty much stayed away from Crunchyroll so far. I don't remember why.
I have an account at Anyime (spelling?) so I can watch transformers rescue bots, and something else.... Never watch much either one of them for some reason. Don't seem to remember liking the app very much....
The remake nailed it. Great animation, fantastic story, as long as you don't watch the dub you will probably think it's amazing.

No, really, don't watch the dub... please... its really bad... I think.... I couldn't make it past the first episode when they directly translate a japanese sailing song and try to sing it.... without any rhyme scheme or meter.
Do not worry. I was a fan of the original, and the remake is fantastic. The Comet Empire season goes off the rails a little in the last few episodes, but the two seasons of the remake are both awesome.
I ended up buying the remake on iTunes/Apple TV so I could watch it. It was expensive, but I’m glad I did. I don’t know if it’s available elsewhere for cheaper.
The Space Battleship is the IRL Yamato battleship. In the show they took the hull of the shipwreck, repaired it, converted it into a spaceship, and refitted it with advanced weaponry such as lasers, missles, particle cannons, and most importantly, the Wave Motion Gun.
The Yamato class battleship is listed at nearly 863 feet in length. 5000 of these stood upright end to end would total over 817 miles. Distance to space is a bit subjective, but Google says 62 miles.
So you'd be well within the range of most low earth orbiting satellites and such.
Or I could use them to conquer first earth and then Space. I am sure I could arrange to crew the first one from a bunch of anime nerds and people who just want to go to space. The rest can be recruited from my conquests as I will make sure to keep the self destruct command codes to myself.
What!?? I'm expecting to receive those with the crew of 15 million Japanese dudes, which will turn those 325 million tons of scrap metal in my very own japanese car manufacturer
You aren't thinking business. Every yamato has 3000 something Japanese people in it, and a whole lot of scrap metal. That's 15 million Japanese hard working people.
You get millions. Sure. But that a giant headache, if the government doesn’t confiscate eminent domain it. But sure seems like there is far better 5000x options if all you want is money
Placed end to end that would stretch 1/5th the way across the Atlantic. With 4 like minded friends you could make a pretty crazy blockade. Suez would get real busy.
The Yamato absorbed enormous amounts of time, money, material and manpower that could have been put to better use elsewhere. It was a logistical nightmare to support at sea and its anti-aircraft defenses (as originally conceived) were something of an after-thought.
Steel produced before the atomic bomb tests have a low background radiation which makes it highly desirable for medical equipment which are sensitive to background radiation. If you had 5,000 Yamato class Battleships then you could easily establish yourself as the world’s foremost provider of low-background steel.
You'd effectively have the only ship-to-ship mass fleet in existence, and at a scale that world domination would be very easy as long as you could crew em.
Yea, it does not matter how far tech has advanced these days. 5000 crewed and trained battleships is too much for any Navy to handle. US Navy has a CSG striking you? They sink a few and run out of ordinance in a day. You encircle the group, and close in to 18 incher range. China decides to pop off? Sail up to their shore, let them exhaust their ammo and begin pounding their ports and shipping.
With 5000 Yamatos, you can have them dispersed enough that a nuke would only take out a single ship. You could singlehandedly tank much of the world's nuclear stockpile (ICBMs have a hard time hitting ships, and good luck with deconfliction, and airbursts are terrible at sinking ships anyways, so spray down the ship and tow it somewhere safe to cool off). The only real threat is subs, but even they have limited ammo.
