See, this is the problem with Mark's short-term thinking. Some nerd would have paid him big bucks for those in 20 or 30 years.

I don't think you can just add up your clones lives and say that equals immortal's age lol. Don't think it works quite like that Kate lol.

u/mmcintoshmerc_88 Battle Beast Nov 17 '23

It'd be funny if Multiple Man in Marvel pulled the same move, just arguing he's technically the oldest being in the entire Marvel universe.

It's seems Kate is gonna take Amber's place as the illogical moron of the show

695

u/raknor88 Show Fan Nov 17 '23

It's an illogical argument. The dude is thousands of years old. He'd be too old for anyone. The real argument should be the fact that he's her boss.

She gave him a stupid reason for an illogical question.

461

u/KEVLAR60442 Nov 17 '23

The age thing was a stupid reason, but her real reason, wherein Immortal is the only one who's experienced the pain of death as much as Kate has, is actually a damn good reason.

189

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '23 edited Nov 17 '23

Yeah it's obvious that she's being facetious about the age thing. I felt reddit has been going a bit downhill lately but seeing so many people who didn't cop that is still quite surprising.

I was actually worried that Allen's girlfriend was going to be the spy. Not Optimus. But that creates lots of other questions.

454

u/GBKMBushidoBrown Allen the Alien Nov 17 '23

I was hoping he would at least get a few combos in. But not even. I guess that means the guardians werent just the A tier of earth, they're generally pretty strong by intergalactic standards.

410

u/Elon-Moist Nov 17 '23

It was also 7v1 while this was 1v3

69

u/TeaAndCrumpets4life Nov 17 '23

Immortal alone held off Omni-man (who I presume is probably stronger than these people) pretty well, while it was 1v3 Allen basically couldn’t fight back in any way against any of them.

111

u/22bebo Nov 18 '23

I think Allen also realized that if he pushed back too hard the Viltrumites would possibly go after the space station with civilians on it. He chose to draw their ire so he'd be the only casualty.

He definitely still would have lost, but he may have been able to get an actual hit in.

The most unbelievable part of this show isn't the superheroes, it's the fact that 2 movie tickets only cost 10 dollars.

694

u/theredwoman95 Nov 17 '23

Maybe they got kids' tickets lol, they tend to be cheaper.

361

u/Karkava Monster Girl Nov 17 '23

Maybe that's why Monster Girl is refusing to solve this by showing the ticket guy her ID. Didn't want to lose her precious children's discount, huh?

134

u/Future-Muscle-2214 Nov 17 '23

She had to pay an additional $10 to the fake mom too so I guess that the discount is pretty great.

u/8dev8 Cecil Stedman Nov 17 '23

On the one hand I get Cecil’s issue

On the otherhand.

Mark ignoring orders to save lives really should reassure you.

1.2k

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '23

Honestly, Cecil really bothered me in this episode. I know he's been manipulating Mark all season (and even before), but telling Mark that he's like his father for choosing to go save billions of lives is especially scummy.

Cecil is really smart, but constantly gaslighting a teenager is not a good idea to turn them into a well-adjusted adult. I think at some point Mark is going to realize that Cecil only cares about control.

That's why Cecil's such a great character. He's somewhere between good and evil.

728

u/LMkingly Nov 17 '23

To be honest i don't think Cecile was wrong to distrust and not want mark to leave the galaxy on a drop of a hat because a random alien that came out of nowhere who somehow heard about him and specifically came to seek him out asked for help. And we see it ended up being bullshit anyway. Cecile is wrong to keep rubbing omni-man in mark's face anytime they have a disagreement but he wasn't wrong about this.

180

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '23 edited Nov 17 '23

I get where you're coming from, but I disagree. Mark is a hero, and part of that means taking risks to save lives. Mark had no way of knowing whether the bug alien was telling the truth, but he can't risk it if the alien isn't. How could you live with yourself if you knew that billions of lives were lost because you didn't trust someone?

(And Mark isn't really at risk - if Viltrum knows about him, then they can come to Earth and kill him literally whenever they want. He can't even beat Omni-Man, much less a squad of Viltrumites. There's literally no reason to believe that he's being lured to a trap that he can't handle.)

That's kind of the entire theme of Mark's arc in this season, too. At the start of the season, he blames himself for all the people that "he" killed, like in the subway scene. Everyone tells him it's not his fault, but he needs time to internalize that. In episode 2, he makes the heroic choice to save the fish people - not out of guilt (like he was doing in episode 1) but out of genuine heroism.

His decision in episode 3 is an evolution of that. He's not only learning to be a hero, but he's willing to make his own decisions and trust his instincts. It was a really powerful character moment.

Contrast that to Cecil. Sure, from his perspective, keeping Mark around on Earth is safe. Cecil would probably have no problem with billions of alien critters dying as long as it provides some marginal benefit to Earth. Cecil is not a good person; he's a pragmatic person. But Mark is good. Mark is a hero, and Cecil isn't.

I know they are Viltrumites but man they put 0 effort into trying to get information out of Allen

1.0k

u/mmcintoshmerc_88 Battle Beast Nov 17 '23

Viltrumite's, it turns out are not great at interrogation. Makes me laugh picturing one of them as a detective and saying "Alright! What were you doing at the docks that night when-oh uhh chief, yeah I uhhh squashed another head. Yeah, sorry."

159

u/Theoldage2147 Nov 17 '23

Reminds me of when I'm playing an RPG game where a mission requires me to be sneaky or interrogate enemies to get information but I rather just kill them all cus I can just do that easily and still finish. That's how the viltrumites view it, they're so strong they can just destroy anything and bypass any need for diplomacy, stealth and side quests.

I'm a bit confused how Allen was even alive the first time he got beaten by the Viltrumites (in his background story)? They don't seem like the people to leave someone half dead, or maybe they couldn't gauge how durable he was and just thought that was enough to kill him?

Either way, these viltrumites do not seem geared for anything but war. I know their purge got rid of anyone 'weak', but does that mean it got rid of anyone who didn't just think the exact same way?

328

Probably because

A) he seems to experience life normally rather than being in labs for most of his life

B) There's still a lot of people who can literally tore open his asshole, so he can't be a bully. At least he knows that he should use his skills for good rather than abusing it.

I'm actually so gullible that I genuinely thought that was Seance Dog that had somehow gotten to their dimension. That entire explanation he was trying to say had already convinced me lmao. Really hoping Nolan was a part of that brainstorm to try and dupe Mark into coming

Also how is Debbie that surprised one of the support group was someone who's partner was murdered by Omni-Man? She already knows Olga suggested it in the first place, and I guess there was no fish-wife there, but she had to have at least suspected that would be a possibility. I guess she's still dealing with the inability to equate the Nolan that she knew for 20 years, and the Omni-Man that murdered thousands

872

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '23

It makes sense that she was surprised. First of all, she thought she knew all of the Guardians' partners. She even expresses shock that Green Ghost even had a partner. Imagine if you're friends with someone for years and find out after their death that they had a long-time boyfriend they never mentioned.

Second, superheroes die pretty often in the line of work. That's just part of it. Omni-Man didn't really kill that many superheroes - what, seven or eight? So the odds of a random dead superhero being one of the few that Omni-Man actually killed are extremely small.

It was great writing. I saw the twist coming, but the emotional beats really worked.

516

I hope they do something with Shapesmith. He's okay in small doses, but I don't really like the character yet. Plus it's hard to believe that the Guardians just took him in despite knowing nothing about him.

I get that he's comic relief right now, but comic relief should still be consistent with the logic of the show. For example, the magic dog gag was excellent because it was silly and made sense in the context of the show.

Yeah this seems super weird to me. Can any random guy with super powers just join up? No thorough background checks or anything required? I thought Cecile was more careful than that.

160

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '23

Yeah, it be passable if Cecil and Immortal weren't in charge, but neither of them would allow some stranger to join.

And did the writers forget that there was a whole interview process to join the Guardians in season 1? It took up a whole episode lol. Season 2 has been incredible except for the Shapesmith stuff, which just feels off. Hopefully there's some big payoff or it's not how it seems.

I've said it before but, the show does such a good job of showing that despite being strong, Allen's no real match and the Viltrumite's are just on this different level of speed, strength and brutality.

368

u/mylegsweat Nov 17 '23

I love Alan’s little smile. Knowing there’s no way out, he then decides to mock them… They toy with him like a pack of intergalactic dogs. Smashing him up, ripping off his arm and eventually slamming her whole arm through his stomach (the Viltrumite classic).

308

u/ganzgpp1 Nov 17 '23

I'm also SO very glad he's aware enough to know "these guys are the bad guys. Like the actual worst. If I lie to them, they'll kill me. If I tell them the truth, they'll STILL kill me. Might as well have some fun and not give out any information since it's a lose-lose either way."

Too many shows write the good guy giving some semblence of trust to the baddies and it always turns out poorly.

I knew exactly what they were setting up when we saw Robot's brain when Amanda was walking up, and it was still absolutely adorable to see his brain light up when he realised she was there!

195

u/LMkingly Nov 17 '23

I'm going to be honest this relationship still kinda weirds me out. Setting aside Robot intentionally creating a child body from his teammates stolen DNA so he could vibe better with Monster girl...I just can't help but think if i was reverted back to a twelve year old i'd never be able to date a twelve year old looking girl/boy even if i knew it was a fellow adult trapped inside a child's body. Just too weird and gross lol. It makes me side eye monster girl and robot whether its fair or not.

322

u/oops_I_have_h1n1 Nov 17 '23

Nah the only weird thing is Robot making a clone of Rex without his consent. The relationship itself is perfectly fine, not like they have many other options anyway, given the situation they're both in.

85

u/ananabf Nov 17 '23

I feel like it would be a lot weirder if he hadn’t been a blob monster before getting his new body

77

u/bootyholebrown69 Nov 17 '23

Yeah exactly. He didn't really have a choice. And he didn't choose a child's body solely for the purpose of getting with monster girl. I think he also wanted to experience what it's like to "grow up" and go from a child to an adult, like a normal human. An experience he never would have been able to have otherwise. The only weird thing is he chose rex's DNA without consent.

u/ikarikh Nov 17 '23

But that's kinda the point of why he likes her. He's not lusting over a 12 year old's body. He's finding kinship with a personality that has experienced being "trapped" in a body like he has.

Him making a young Rex body was done purely from a "logical" standpoint that given her visual age and lust for rex, a young rex would be the most desirable physical body to appease her.

From Rudy's standpoint, none of this has to do with sexuality. It's akin to an aromantic relationship where he is into her for her, not her body or genitals.

He simply calculated the best option to appeal to "her" desires to increase his chances of getting her to like him back.

It's possible the two may have a sexual relationship down the line as she helps him to experience human emotions and experiences more now.

But it wasn't his original intent. As he has spent his entire life prior reacting to everything exclusively from a purely logical standpoint devoid of full expression of senses, emotions, etc.

I really hope we get a lot of seasons of this show because I can see that they’re setting up practically every character from the comics rather than focusing on a few. Hell, Debbie is getting more character development than she did in the comics. Love this adaptation.

I should've seen the title reveal coming when they just casually called him Invincible in the first few minutes. Good for Allen though! His origin story and even the title card!

Mark had a pretty eventful day of college! Punches in his v-card, meets his comic book hero, gets off on a new space adventure...and reunites with his dad!

Mark giving away his collection hit me in the heart. I'm glad he didn't give away Seance Dog in the end, he just couldn't part with it.

Poor Debbie. She had a chance at a real support group and friends who could help her process her grief but she ended up talking to the worst person to reveal the truth to who had the worst reaction to her husband's identity. And now Mark is gone.

I like that Mark and William still remember Rick and both feel responsible for what happened to him. William was a total bro here.

What a way to transition away from sex. Kind of hard when both main characters are banging!

Optimus Prime is leading the Coalition of Planets against the Viltrumites? Nice.

I love how Allen's pet has one eye and he has a smoking hot girlfriend voiced by Tatiana Malsany.

The Viltrumites have no chill.

Feels like two episodes in one the way they had the credits in the middle.

Kate and Immortal are still kind of inappropriate but I guess it makes sense when Kate explains why she's attracted to him. And Rex is still impossible.

Robot and Monster Girl sitting in a tree...but they looked really cute together here.

Oh, hi Nolan! That was quick!

I’m happy with the direction they’re taking Amber.

I get that in the first season she’s meant to be a subversion of the love interest who learns of the superhero identity and meekly concedes that their needs would always come second to the hero’s job, but I feel as if expressing that frustration as explosive anger towards Mark made people focus on the wrong things. Thinking “Amber is being unreasonable” instead of “This is emotionally tolling on Amber”

Instead showing Amber WANTING to support Mark but it taking a clear toll on her is a better imo. It puts an emphasis on the subversion they were going for in season 1 as well as paralleling Debbie’s story this season. Though I feel bad that a lot of people have probably already written off her character.

I feel so bad for Debbie! Also so strange how Olga and Debbie are so close and seemingly Aquarius’s wife, yet never knew Green Ghost’s husband. Maybe he’ll take up the mantle? And on the discussion of spouses, did anyone get the vibe in season 1 that War Woman and her business associate were closer than just coworkers?

168

u/nepo5000 Allen the Alien Nov 17 '23

This is actually covered by the same explanation for why she died to omniman instead of phasing out and running away. She was the “new” green ghost so it’s apparently some kind of mantle and she just got super unlucky with having basically no experience before omniman turned.

Everybody be fucking! - okay not really, but still lol.

Peter Cullen/Optimus Prime being the voice of a peacekeeper in a war, that's quite ironic, though probably not really considering what he did to a recovering Allen.

In case it wasn't obvious enough, Amber was never against Mark saving lives, she was against being lied to & kept in the dark for the Reason (read: Excuse) of saving lives, especially when it's been showcased time and time again that Mark is an absolute terrible liar. He's almost as bad as Insomniac Miles Morales in his debut game being terrible at keeping his identity secret.

Anyways, this episode was fantastic. Rudy and Amanda bonding & "growing" was really good. And it's really good to see the writers flesh out Kate to some extent, though her reasoning for banging a several millennia asshole cave man is shaky at best.

But I'm most excited to see Rex be fleshed out, everyone keeps going on about their pasts in some way or another, and he's the only one who hasn't, so with any luck he eventually will.

And DAMN, I was hoping to see Debbie get some good therapy and have the occasional drink, but nope, it looks like she's going to be 100% with the bottle because no one is willing to put their shit aside and help her. Like shit dude I know you lost your wife but you shutting Debbie out because of what she didn't know is beyond fucked up.

The fact that that bug showed up as Seance Dog means that Nolan had a conversation with him about Mark's interests. It adds some layers when you think about Nolan leaving earth with tears in his eyes after Mark says "I'd still have you Dad."

Thought Mark and Amber's scene was really sweet and genuine.

That guy from the support group is a bastard, I do not care how much pain he's in.

Wow, this episode was fantastic. The stuff with Debbie last week felt like filler since it didn't give us any new information, but all of her scenes in this episode were amazing. I loved the scene where she kept deliberating whether to text Mark again. Mark and Nolan were her whole life, and she's been in a void since Nolan left, and Mark leaving to college makes her feel completely alone. The support group came at the right time, and losing that at the end felt so tragic because Debbie must feel truly alone now.

The magic dog scene was so funny. "We have dogs here" is the hardest I've laughed so far in the entire show. Mark's reaction was really smart. I also loved how Mark took charge with Cecil. "I have to listen to myself before I listen to you" is a great line and shows great growth for Mark.

The ending was really predictable, but I was so excited to see/hear Omni-Man that I didn't mind. It doesn't seem like he's returned to the Viltrumite Empire since his garb looked completely different, and the whole vibe of the planet seemed intended to signal to us that Omni-Man has actually changed. Plus narratively it works really well with Debbie's story in this episode.

I really enjoyed the little side quest with Marvin Allen. It felt like a little mini-episode within the series. I hope this isn't the last we see of him - the implication is that he survived, and that would be a lot more satisfying narratively.

This episode felt really long (in a good way!), especially with the credits fakeout in the middle. I'm really sad that there's only one more episode until next year.

(Edit: I'm tired and somehow wrote "Marvin" instead of "Allen.")
