One is Milk, the other Cream

889

u/06Wahoo 1d ago

That, and that you can only say for sure that one does not use monkey labor. The status of the other is indeterminate.

259

u/wardude1 1d ago

The logo is not protected so pretty much worthless. Moreover all coconut farms use monkeys for the really tall threes. So it is impossible for the factory to know the monkey status on each coconut.

214

u/SirJefferE 1d ago

Moreover all coconut farms use monkeys

I had never heard of monkey labour before so I looked it up after this comment.

Honestly, it looks like a great idea. I support monkey labour. I mean, as long as the monkeys are taken care of. I suspect the conditions aren't great for some of them.

159

u/RoyBeer 1d ago

I had never heard of monkey labour before so I looked it up after this comment.

Rich monkeys do monkey business. Poor monkeys do monkey labour.

9

u/EarhornJones 1d ago

There are some varieties of tea that are regularly harvested by trained monkeys. At my local tea shop they have "monkey picked" right in the name of the product.

3

u/yourein84me 1d ago

It's just the name. Monkey-picked tea is not actually picked by monkeys.

23

u/Head_Trust_9140 1d ago

All monkeys live chained to a cage unless they’re on duty as they’re leashed then. They eat pretty well and is otherwise taken care of such as cleaned etc…

The only ones really taking care of monkeys as pets is monks, but they don’t use them for work. Those using monkeys for work take care of them as good as possible for the most part, but they’re always chained as they’re dangerous.

6

u/CarltonSagot 1d ago

All monkeys live chained to a cage unless they’re on duty as they’re leashed then.

And there goes my happy.

True, but I'd say the disclaimer is conspicuously absent from one of them.

6

u/justinlanewright 1d ago

If someone's willing to use money labor, they're probably willing to lie about using monkey labor.

6

u/Leopard__Messiah 1d ago

Oh you just know they're beating the FUCK out of the monkeys then. Any product that doesn't specify their level of monkey abuse is automatically assumed to be on some monkey revenge type shit, even when it's not profitable.

20

u/darrellbear 1d ago

When I was a kid one of the local TV stations had a kid's show with a host called Captain Briny. He was some guy with a beard and a sailing captain's hat, he had a monkey always perched on his shoulder, a little squirrel monkey called Salty. My brother and I got to meet Captain Briny and Salty once, he fed the monkey bubble gum. Years later, when I was in high school, one day a guy was showing his GF something he had cupped in his hand. He turned to me and opened his hand, revealing a tiny little skull. He said, "Do you remember Salty the monkey? This was him!"

9

u/soulteepee 1d ago

…..SCREAM

6

u/darrellbear 1d ago

I swear that monkey looked unhealthy when we saw him, he was green. I always figured eating bubble gum did him in.

Monkey has to work in dream

Monkey work because monkey tame

But monkey wants to dream of fame

Monkey stifles her plaintive scream

Somebody just tell me which one is the stuff that comes out of the coconut naturally and which is the one that the monkeys deposit when they fuck the coconut.

10

u/Harmaakettu 1d ago

The clear liquid is the actual coconut milk.

If you crack it open and it's white, I'm sorry but your coconut has been fucked by a monkey.

5

u/Philks_85 1d ago

They obviously use monkey labour to churn the coconut milk into coconut cream..... it's on the label.

7

u/hughesyourdadddy 1d ago

Can’t get the cream without the monkey labour.

10

u/YanicPolitik 1d ago

they have the monkeys working to make the cream 😩

8

u/nota_is_useless 1d ago

Not sure if this was a joke or not. Monkeys are used to harvest coconuts. Saw a video from Thailand and thought we could use the same in India. Because coconut tree climbing is a dangerous profession.

3

u/showers_with_grandpa 1d ago

Yeah as an American the idea of people being offended by monkeys being trained to pick coconuts has my eyes rolling. I looked it up and a single macaque can harvest over 1000 coconuts a day vs around 100 MAX for an individual human. And as you pointed out, very dangerous compared to an animal that literally evolved to climb trees.

Next we will have outrage over the exploitation of sheep dogs.

2

u/stickdeoderant 1d ago

The monkeys are essential to cream the milk 🤷‍♂️

39

u/activelyresting 1d ago

Coconut cream just has a higher fat content, they're basically the same thing, but the cream is richer and thicker. Same with dairy milk and cream :)

45

u/2007pearce 1d ago

Personally I prefer milk for cooking but try both ways if you haven't. Make sure not to use monkey labour either way though, they're not the most hygienic for food prep

32

u/Bluecat16 1d ago

Cream is great for curries since you can fry the curry paste/seasonings in it (the fat holds the flavor).

24

u/Manovsteele 1d ago

A good coconut milk (i.e. Without added emulsifiers) should be separated in the tin though, so you can still take out just the pure fat and split that to fry the paste in, and then add the more liquid parts of the can after to simmer the curry.

44

u/thatredlad 1d ago

The monkeys retrieve the coconuts. They don't work the production line.

19

u/2007pearce 1d ago

Its only cause they can't wear gloves. Otherwise it would be open season

23

u/Comfortable_Oven_113 1d ago

Yeah, they do. I've been to the coconut farms, seen it with my own eyes. It's monkeys all the way down. Monkeys climb the trees. Monkeys drive the forklifts, run the grinders, operate the centrifuge. There's only one human there, a guy named Joe. His whole job is to stir creamer and sugar into the monkeys coffee, since they lack the opposable thumbs to grab the little stirrer sticks.

7

u/pornographic_realism 1d ago

Joe is actually a multimillionaire from his early years commodity trading, he does what he does for the love of the job.

3

u/Comfortable_Oven_113 1d ago

It makes sense that it's an unpaid position. The monkeys in charge of payroll are always clueless.

2

u/thatredlad 1d ago

Don't let them see you telling people about Joe. He's meant to be a trade secret.

2

u/AineLasagna 1d ago

This is a lie Joe tells to keep his job as monkeys do actually have opposable thumbs, it’s like their whole deal

I first heard about it a few years ago when a supermarket I went to was being protested for carrying items harvested through monkey labor.

I remember laughing about it and thinking, "How could watching cool monkeys throw fruit out of trees be abuse?"

But they're for sure abusing the monkeys and it's a legit issue.

Apparently there were some coconut farmers in Thailand (?) abusing monkeys to retrieve the coconuts. TIL

u/coulsonsrobohand 1d ago

On one hand, my first instinct is to be horrified. On the other hand…..I’m not surprised as I should be

12

u/DutchMitchell 1d ago

This world is a rotten place, all because of humanity

8

u/Carvj94 1d ago

Worst part is that it'd cost them barely anything extra to treat them nicely. Shit just build em some bunk beads and give them decent meals. Apparently basically all primates LOVE figit toys and those are dirt cheap from China. Hell abusing the monkeys probably costs them more than being nice since they probably need to hire more humans to handle them than would otherwise be needed.

5

u/NorthernerWuwu 1d ago

I mean, they are really good at it.

7

u/DutchMitchell 1d ago

Humans are also really good at exploiting others for their own gain

8

u/Additional_Meeting_2 1d ago

If the monkeys were fed and treated tell they would just think it’s fun. Like dogs with jobs. The issue is often they aren’t very well treated

9

9

I mean at least they're not using orangutan as sex slaves

4

7

u/badchriss 1d ago

Never heard of that and looked it up....first thought "awww, them's working like little humans"...then thought, hm something tells me this ain't right. Yeah, it's a fucked up business that involves mistreatment and torturing animals. Same with that one coffee. Makes me wonder, why does that company advertises it that it uses monkeys when everyone come to the conclusion that this is an absolutely rotten thing?

Is coconut cream the same as cream of coconut? I wanted to make pina coladas but this stuff here is all I could find. Please forgive my ignorance

13

u/Esc777 1d ago

No Cream of coconut is basically coconut flavored syrup. Your drink will be remarkably less sweet and full of thick particles of fat that won’t dissolve if you use coconut cream.

Cream of coconut is one of those 50s products made for tiki drinks. BevMo or online.

3

u/degggendorf 1d ago

Walmart carries Coco Lopez

4

u/Jasmirris 1d ago

I would say cream of coconut is more like sweetened condensed milk. It's better for drinks and desserts.

7

u/Guatc 1d ago

The fat content.

3

u/nerfherder998 1d ago

If you search the nutritional labels, you’ll find the same ingredients but the coconut milk has slightly fewer calories. The “milk” has 140 cal/80ml, the “cream” has 60 cal/30ml, which would work out to 160 cal/80ml.

TL;DR: same coconuts, more water.

You might want to check expiration dates on those cans. Native Forest started claiming “Monkey Free Plus” status for all of their coconut products in August of last year. My guess is more recent cans of either product will have that certification logo.

3

u/Warm-Report-4747 1d ago

Although controversial and unethical, “Monkey Labor” sounds fucking cool!

4

Is animal labor a bad thing per se? What about eg. pigs and dogs to find truffles. Or dogs that are used in all sorts of ways from drug sniffing to guiding the blind. I never even considered this could be cruelty.

5

u/TanteRock 1d ago

It's mostly the coconuts from Thailand, that are harvest by monkeys. The way this monkeys are trained and treated is very cruel. They normaly live in big groups/families in the wild and are caged and/or on a chain all alone after they are captured. https://www.greenmemag.com/animals/the-hidden-cost-of-coconut-monkey-labor-in-thailand/

2

u/Super_Hans69 1d ago

It's most likely what's called a "soft" change to the product I.e the artwork ( as seen by the claim of no monkey labour). In this case the barcode (EAN) of each SKU is the same but the internal code that the manufacturer uses are different.

When it's a "hard" change that then means new EAN number as something fundamentally changed I.e volume of content, ingredients etc.

These changes are very common in FMCG. Good example is coca cola 500ml around Christmas time. Same product but artwork is different and can sometimes result in 2 different drinks on the shelf.

The absence of a monkey labour sticker doesn’t mean it uses monkey labour. It means it doesn’t have a label to say it doesn’t.

Someone in marketing has decided this is an important fact to start including on the label, or perhaps now they use a different supplier and their previous one did. You can’t know that from the absence of a label.

They’re also different products.
