I cannot describe how happy I am the season opened with the alternate world where Mark sided with Nolan! Love that they slightly expanded on it too.

u/FKDotFitzgerald Allen the Alien Nov 03 '23

Was that paralyzed Eve bit in the comic? So dark.

308

u/mmcintoshmerc_88 Battle Beast Nov 03 '23

IIRC I don't think Eve was in the resistance at all in the comics, in the comics the resistance was just Robot, Immortal and an alternate Angstrom.

141

u/FKDotFitzgerald Allen the Alien Nov 03 '23

Yeah I definitely didn’t remember it. Really great inclusion to hammer home how bleak that reality is.

50

u/Drake9214 Allen the Alien Nov 03 '23

That version of eve was in a resistance though because we see it when she shows up and mark gets stranded. It was brutal in this though. No clue how all this is going to go with the changes but I’m so excited.

Leaving Eve alive also covers the plot hole that might open up with her resurrection powers

50

u/bestoboy The Lizard League Nov 03 '23

yup I was shocked at first that he was able to kill her but the reveal that she was paralyzed explained it.

10

u/regretfulposts Doc Seismic Nov 03 '23

Makes you wonder if she can die like a power outage or someone pulling the plug only for her to do a quick revive and be free.

This was my thought, they don’t want first time viewers to know about that until the conquest fight.

Of course, paralyzed but not killed. I guess they're keeping something.

25

Problably my favourite part of the episode. The thing I'm most looking forward to after reading the comics is all the ways the show expands iconic scenes from the source material, and this is exactly what i had in mind.

Angstrom Levy is pronounced LeeVee? Man I must’ve been getting that wrong for years I thought it was LeVEE.

Still one of the biggest shockers in the comic was seeing his true form. Hopefully they include that in the future.

18

Wait, what? I don’t remember Elephant ever being more than fodder. Do you happen to remember the issue?

Oooh amazing episode,

Gotta love the trauma, Mark still grabbing three plates to make dinner

Almost having a panic attack when reminded of Nolan at school.

Mark vs immortal, little disappointed it wasn’t training, but the fight was great.

Evil mark is so disturbing,

98

u/PresleyPack Nov 03 '23

OMG the three plates!!! What a good catch!

62

u/thestagsman Nov 03 '23

Evil Mark excusing his actions by saying everyone he hurts is doing it to themselves, then our good Mark blaming himself for people getting hurt while everyone else tries to convince him it’s they are doing it to themselves.

10

u/badpiggy490 Cecil Stedman Nov 03 '23

Didn't notice the three plates part lol. Great catch

396

u/Frontier246 Nov 03 '23

They totally mislead people with the Immortal scene in the trailer.

Oh hey, Kate's brother!

Glad to see Donald back!

Showing how important Eve is to Mark that even in a universe where he's evil he can't outright kill her.

I now know how to pronounce Angstrom's last name!

More RobotxMonster Girl set up.

Amber is in full nice and supportive girlfriend mode but I wonder how people will react when the cracks start forming before they break up. But it does feel like they're trying to sell people on the Amber relationship still.

Oh Cecil if only you knew you were putting your faith in a guy who would kill you and take over the Earth.

Didn't expect Olga to come back. I guess they need someone to replace that other Superhero wife friend because I think she was associated with another Image property?

The beginning of Debbie's alcoholism.

Eve talking about feeling lonely and then immediately talking to Mark? I don't think that's a coincidence.

I like how they introduce Bulletproof as someone who can take Rex's BS.

Mark getting a taste for how Cecil missions go and it not jiving with him feels like foreshadowing how their partnerships will ultimately go.

Interesting set up where part of Angstrom's hatred of Mark is partially fueled by his AU counterpart who experienced Mark destroying his Earth. I guess that overrode his compassion and altruism, on-top of driving him insane.

183

u/armyofbeees Nov 03 '23

I love how Cecil is so mistrusting of Mark here but Mark insists he’ll always follow Cecil’s orders, really great foreshadowing tbh I’m glad they added that bit in

110

The way they set up bulletproof as just older Rex is so funny

u/TannenbergBlitz Nov 03 '23

It seems that the setup for a breakup is a bit far now unless other episodes foreshadow it a bit.

However, the use of a trope named after a common house appliance is not off the table: the mean big-brain man wants to destroy Mark's life after all. However, I doubt they are going to "Gwen Stacy" their way out of that because of the "problematic" connotations that trope has. Maybe Mark is the one who ends their relationship? Who knows? I'm open to anything as long is good and well-developed.

97

u/MysteryMan9274 "Dude, I saw it on Reddit" Nov 03 '23

In the comics, they mutually part on good terms because they both realize that Mark will never make Amber his first priority and that Amber will never fully understand Mark's superhero life.

18

u/Volgyi2000 Nov 03 '23

I don't remember this 100%, but it was also because he was leaving on space missions for months at a time right? Like wasn't he gone for months doing something and Amber was pissed about it? I don't remember if it was when he went to see his dad or when he went to see Allen.

36

u/MysteryMan9274 "Dude, I saw it on Reddit" Nov 03 '23

Yeah. Amber wasn't pissed, just kinda sad. And there was another guy who she was hanging out with, Gary I think, and she was getting kinda close to him. He got a work call when they were hanging out, and she was understanding about him having to leave (being used to similar situations with Mark), but he disregarded his work to stay with her, and she was very into that.

19

u/Jazzlike-Ideal Nov 03 '23

Nah she was pissed lol, but she was also sad. They got in an argument about it before this back and forth:

Mark: "I'm a superhero that's the deal" - Referring to him leaving for months at a time without a return date.

Amber: "What if I'm not happy with the deal anymore?"

Mark: sad face

How is Donald back ?

31

u/NoxiousVaporwave Nov 03 '23

He’s a robot now. He was a cyborg in the comics i think the whole time.

10

u/JoseMich Nov 03 '23

Yeah, if I remember correctly he survived the Omni-man debacle in the comics because he was able to have his head detach and escape.

It seems like in the show they've decided to use the Omni-man incident as an explanation for his reconstruction as a robot - which I personally like. It feels like clean storytelling.

11

u/Anamethatisname Nov 03 '23

Yeah they’re definitely not trying to sell anyone on the amber relationship. Shes just too much of a civ for Mark

“Oh, that’s what you were practicing on those protesters earlier” Was such a cold line from Nolan

102

"Sure, but you should've died at birth" was hilarious, even though we saw it in the trailer

295

“20 years and I was a goddamn, fucking pet.”

120

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '23

One of the few character changes I appreciate.

I wonder how they'll turn this around when they make up.

19

u/Lunardragon456 Nov 03 '23

I’m calling it now that Nolan will enlist Debbie in helping the Viltrumites settle into Earth life in the show. Throughout this B plot, they’ll set up the Argall connection that leads to Thragg trying to kill Nolan, but the other Viltrumites stop him because they really appreciate someone actually looking out for them over of the survival of the fittest society that Thragg helped push on them.

Debbie won’t forget what Nolan did, but between this and taking care of his other son Oliver (which is honestly another black mark against him), she’ll go back to being on good terms with him. It’s not like they end up having another kid anyways so the relationship status can be more flexible.

54

u/Corronchilejano Nov 03 '23

Maybe they won't this time.

i hope they don't, it was one of the worst handled parts of the comic

76

u/Psychoshrapnel Nov 03 '23

It wasn’t handled the best but should still be adapted. Nolan’s entire redemption arc as a whole should get a lot more time to breath than it did in the comics.

264

u/KosherClam Nov 03 '23

Man they're really going to have to work to make me be okay with Debbie forgiving Nolan later. She's just got so much more characterization in the show and it's going to be such a harder pill to swallow this time around.

167

u/Klunkey Nov 03 '23

On the bright side, it’s nice to see Debbie not pull the “oh, why did you make Nolan leave” shit on Mark (though she apologizes for it), and I think they will introduce Debbie’s boyfriend earlier.

I would LOVE to see it end with Debbie not forgiving Nolan, but moving on as a result.

91

u/MonstrousGiggling Nov 03 '23

That still might happen, she's just starting her grieving process here and alcoholism.

Agreed though, never sat right with me how easily she forgave Nolan in the comics. He absolutely shattered her heart and she deserves better than that even if Nolan improves on himself.

Like I love Omniman but he's a genocidal maniac and has killed so many innocent people. I can't help but repeat, Debbie deserves better than him.

I think it would be a disservice having her forgive him in the show. I think we have progressed as a society enough to recognize the way it was written in the comics was pretty whack.

70

u/princevince1113 Battle Beast Nov 03 '23

kirkman mentioned treating the show as his chance to write invincible the way he would if he had a chance to do it over again knowing how it all turns out, im guessing that if they do go the route of debbie ending up back with nolan, considering the effort they put into making him more brutal and explicitly evil, his redemption and regaining his relationship with debbie will require a proportional update. i expect he’ll have a longer and grander arc to prove himself than he did in the comics which was basically just showing back up with a new kid and apologizing.

38

u/buffpriest Nov 03 '23

"Hey, here's my love child I just made with my alien wife. Take care of him while I go deal with stuff"

Debbie - "oKaY, sIr!! 😍"

I know its not quite what happened but pretty much.

8

u/Spawnkillthekiller8 Nov 04 '23

Eh not at all tbh, Debbie decided to take care of Oliver of her own accord because Mark brought it back. Nolan didn't really have any kind of involvement.

→ More replies (1)

23

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '23

What about mark? I feel like he was way too quick to forgive nolan as well, but my memory is hazy. I cant imagine it goes down the same way, especislly with the show putting in so much more effort to emphasize mark's trauma

31

u/MonstrousGiggling Nov 03 '23

Agreed! I'm very interested to see how this plays out because I think they want to respect and address trauma more than the comic does.

Mark goes through soooooooooooooooo much shit in this comic too. He's one of my favorite fictional characters because every other chapter you're like "fucking damn, this poor kid" and genuinely feel for him because he's such a good dude.

25

11

u/Volgyi2000 Nov 03 '23

I don't remember the timeframes in the comic, but Debbie took care of Oliver for a while before Nolan came back. I think that softened her up for him in my head cannon.

5

u/KosherClam Nov 03 '23

Nah I get that, he's definitely the bridge to forgiveness. It's also another stake through the heart though being he's proof he just plowed a space ant.

29

u/tylernazario Omni-Man Nov 03 '23

Honestly I hope she doesn’t forgive Nolan. The show is the perfect place to improve on things from the comics or change things that didn’t work

3

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '23

Same with Mark?

29

u/tylernazario Omni-Man Nov 03 '23

I’m more comfortable with Mark forgiving him (mainly cause they’d have to change so much of the plot if he doesn’t).

But when he does forgive Nolan I’d like it to be a long and slow process. In the comics Mark forgives him almost instantly and it felt rushed. I hope their reconciliation takes at least a few episodes if not a whole season.

I was in the apparent minority who felt S1 Amber was a major improvement on Comic Amber, and it definitely feels to me like they took the notes people had on S1 Amber and S2 Amber is yet another level up.

46

u/WindWielder Rex Splode Nov 03 '23

Literally the only issue I have with show Amber is the “I figured it out weeks ago” line. There was no buildup and it makes the college fight complete bullshit. We got to see Comic Amber trying to work it out at least.

Other than that though show Amber is unquestionably better than comic Amber, who had the personality of a cardboard cutout. If you put a gun to my head and told me to give you 3 adjectives to describe comic Amber’s character I couldn’t do it.

13

u/goeatacactus An Undisclosed Location in Utah 🏜️ Nov 03 '23

Yeah they goofed the timing on that bit for sure. If she figured it out at the college it could’ve worked.

4

u/Song_of_Pain Nov 03 '23

Nah, there's the constant framing that she's always right that's annoying. Let her be flawed, don't have Mark's friends constantly take Amber's side, let her be a dumb teenager, etc.

5

u/Venom1462 "Dude, I saw it on Reddit" Nov 03 '23

Before ep7 everybody (inc. me) was saying that Amber was a massive improvement from the comics, honestly I don't mind them being together we know they're gonna break up anyway and other than "I realized week ago" and being mad at him was the only thing I didn't like otherwise she was great.

102

u/TannenbergBlitz Nov 03 '23

This is my take, but I think this "incident" is setting up Cecil and Mark's eventual meltdown like we are going to see later. Knowing Levy, this is not going to end well for Mark, and he likely is going to blame Cecil for this: stopping this thing was his order after all.

64

u/mmcintoshmerc_88 Battle Beast Nov 03 '23

They're interesting villains, honestly. I do like how they're selfish but also very pragmatic. Still evil.

I liked how evil Mark paralyzing Eve instead of killing her kept Eve’s hidden power of not being able to die for later on.

It also spared Mark and Omni-Man, as uncapped Eve is (pretty much) able to kill Viltrumites

It's so tough watching this show with my friends who haven't read the comics. Seeing all the plots set up so early on make it tough to keep from spoiling anything. Man, this is gonna be a good season! Invincible War here we come

26

u/incredibleamadeuscho Robot Nov 03 '23

Angstrom Levy becoming a villain as a result of his attempt to save lives is just tragic. Also the notion that his villainy comes as a result of his multiple memories is a great twist. I like how Kirkman and the creative team are willing to make changes to the story Kirkman and Ottley did years ago.

4

u/black6211 Nov 12 '23

I really, really liked how that small bit changed his motivation so much. It always felt a bit weak in the comic to me.

23

u/runthejulius Nov 03 '23

Wasn’t the whole point with Angstrom Levy that any time Mark snapped and became evil in a world it was because something happened to Eve? So what gives here.

49

u/MysteryMan9274 "Dude, I saw it on Reddit" Nov 03 '23

She was the only person who he refused to kill, so that's still a pretty big flag. He even "practiced" the paralysis move (on civilians) to ensure that he wouldn't kill her. What could be more romantic than that?

11

u/WindWielder Rex Splode Nov 03 '23

“I love you so much I’ll make sure you never leave!” Gave off “A Rose for Emily” vibes lol.

35

u/Appropriate-Shoe-266 Nov 03 '23

Pretty much, Mark gets his powers at a younger age, making it much easier for Nolan to manipulate him, in many of those timelines he even steals Mark away and raises him by himself.

14

u/runthejulius Nov 03 '23

I do hope they alude to the thing with Eve tho at some point this season as it sets up their relationship a lot later on.

6

u/Appropriate-Shoe-266 Nov 03 '23

If it’s not this, it’ll be something equally romantic or better tbh so I’m not really worried.

20

u/runthejulius Nov 03 '23

Timeline wise him and Amber should be breaking up this season.

6

u/AnUnConcerndCitizen Nov 03 '23

I have a feeling they may ease away from that a bit and have it be something more like "Eve's interactions with Mark are what let him create enough attachments with others to make him more loyal to humanity than Nolan." So in any universe where Mark is not close with Eve, his dad is able to disconnect Mark from his humanity and he becomes evil.

If you look at season 1, it's fair to guess that if Eve hadn't talked with Mark and taken him to meet the Teen Team, he likely would've spent much more time throughout the season "training" with Nolan instead of working with other superheroes, leading to disastrous consequences for Earth.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '23

That was stated much later in the comics when Eve is pregnant, so they still have the chance to set that up.

19

u/Brodatious_T Nov 03 '23

I loved how they kept teasing the smash cut to the title screen when they paused before saying invincible

17

u/VampiroMedicado Nov 03 '23

It hurt my soul watching evil Mark, but I loved that they cooked better the backstory of this villain and the Cecil distrust of Invicible.

With episode 1 doing the ENTIRE first angstrom story from issues 16-24, I was reminded how episode 6 of last season also did the entire Reanimen arc in one. With this in mind, here’s my predictions for the rest of season 2:

Episode 2 (In about 6 hours I lose my virginity to a fish) Atlantis arc/Midnight City and Darkwing 2, as well as some Doc Seismic and Lizard League stuff. Shapesmith meets the Guardians. Also shows more of Atom Eve since they’re definitely trying to set up their relationship. As well as more attention on Bulletproof and Immortal… and Kate…

Episode 3 (this missive this machination): Basically a straightforward adaptation of Issue 23, the Allen the Alien issue with the Coalition of Planets and the other Viltrumites. Maybe to add more theyll put Thaedus in a bigger spotlight, show more of galactic society/politics, and add Battle Beast into the mix.

Episode 4 (it’s been a while): The whole Thraxa arc can be done in this episode. Mark reunites with his dad, fights the other Viltrumites, brings home Oliver. Amber is stressed bc he keeps leaving to go to space and stuff. Cecil is pissed that Mark disobeys him by going go space.

Episode 5 (I paid them to stick near the house): Debbie raises Oliver…honestly idk what else should happen here. Mauler twins resurface? Maybe on earth, Mark has another run-in with Titan, and maybe Mister Liu. The incoming mars attack and maybe even the lizard league stuff could be teased… Oh I got it, the Africa visit with Eve and Amber.

Episode 6 (this isn’t happening): Mars attacks/Lizard League arc. They learn the Martians are coming to earth. Shapesmith reveals his origin. Mark and Eve kiss! Most of the Guardians stop the mars attack… but the Lizard League kill Shrinking Rae, seemingly kill Kate, and critically injure Rex before he explodes like all of them. Amber and Mark break up. Immortal temporarily retires. Cecil’s in dire straits, and getting desperate/more erratic. And at the end, Mark visits Art and says his dad had told him on Thraxa to “read his books”. Mark learns that there are ways to defeat Viltrumites.

Episode 7 (i thought you were stronger): Eve and Mark can’t decide whether to date or not, he still feels weird about Amber. Also… THE ANGSTROM EPISODE. Fight across dimensions… and “I thought you were stronger.” Meanwhile all the heroes are kidnapped by Doc Seismic, and Cecil sends out Darkwing 2 and the Reanimen to save them. He is also frazzled by Invincible killing someone.

Episode 8 (that makes you my enemy): Nolan tries to escape prison and fails… and realizes he misses his wife. Maybe more Battle Beast and Coalition of Planets/Allen? Rex gives Eve surprisingly good advice about Mark and they decided to date. And most importantly… the Cecil fight.

Essentially, season 2 adapts issues 15-50, but skips the plots of issues 43-47. Issues 14, 16, 24, and 42 were covered in todays episode, and issues 1-13, 18-20 and 36-37 were covered in season 1.

Saved for Season 3: Anissa, probably in the first episode. Allen returning to Earth and then getting imprisoned. Debbie dating Paul. Fightmaster and Drop Kick. Dupli-Kate’s and Immortal’s returns/Multi-Paul. Oliver becoming a young hero. Return of the Flaxans, even though they were teased in the season 1 finale.

EDIT: adjusted after episode 2

Just came back from seeing it at a theater. Crowd reactions were a lot of fun, and it was a lot of show only people there.

That episode was such a great opening. Love that the started it with the alternate dimension. I also liked the added fake out with the immortal fighting Mark.

And after seeing how they introduced Angstrom I’m sure I know how the season is gonna end forsure, especially knowing where episode 4 is gonna end at.

S1 they took feedback about the comics and leveled Amber up, S2 they took feedback from S1 and did it again! I love how they adapt and change things that need tweaking until everything fits just perfectly. This is one of my favorite adaptations because it loves the source material while accepting its flaws.

Surprised we’re seemingly getting the Invincible War so early in the season. We might actually get the Oliver reveal before S3

There was a glimpse of the Battle on Thraxa in the Trailer, so We're a 100% gonna get Oliver in this Season.

16

u/MysteryMan9274 "Dude, I saw it on Reddit" Nov 03 '23

There was an image of Nolan wearing his Thraxa outfit, so we're definitely getting Oliver. The only question is if it's before or after the mid-season break. I think that Mark meeting Nolan is probably going to be the Episode 4 cliffhanger.

32

We're not getting Invincible War this season, get over it people 💀

9

I genuinely think that everyone who thinks we’ll get to invincible war didn’t read the comics and just knows of big events lol. I was feeling extra petty when someone got mad at me about saying Invincible War isn’t likely so I went back to compendium 1 and 2 and listed every major event that happens before the war. It’s literally a 28 bullet point list lmao. They crossed off like 2-3 of those things this episode lol

I haven’t reread for a few months, but I’m pretty sure it goes Thraxa > ITYWS > Invincible War. So probably Thraxa Ep 4, “killing” Levi end of season 2, Invincible War Mid/Late S3?

13

The Thraxa reunion is in issue 25, the "final" Angstrom Levy conflict is in issue 33, and the Invincible War is in issue 60.
