It was a static fire test, where all the engines are supposed to fire, but the rocket is held down by clamps. Likely the clamps failed somehow.

The shaking is probably due to them zooming in.

The losing it at times is probably due to them watching it happen in real life and not just through the camera. Plus reacting to what was probably very loud.

Depends on how far away they were. My guess is this was filmed at the end of their lens.
Also might not be a lens with a zoom motor. Zooming out might be a pain in the ass.

I'm not so convinced you would do better. Even professional people tends to have issues with tracking when they need to use silly magnifications to have something to actually capture. Their only advantages is they don't need to hand-hold, so they get a bit less camera shake. But still so easy to end up with "where is that than plane or rocket???"

I read the news report coming from China. Apparently the connection point on the ground didn't hold the rocket sturdy enough. That's why the rocket went up in the sky. The villagers were warned about the test and have evacuated the area two days ago, so there were no casualties.

Cuz fucking politics. They don't want to put them on the coast because they don't want the US spying on their progress. Lol

China actually built its original rocket launch sites inland for protection from any possible naval attack, albeit with the infamous consequence of dropping spent rocket stages on villages. Putting rocket launch sites inland provides no protection from spy satellites.
China now has a much newer coastal launch facility, Wenchang, however its launch infrastructure can only be used to launch the newer Long March 5 launch vehicle and cannot be used to launch legacy launch vehicles.

Well further evidence they don't have a way to even self-destruct the rocket like any sane rocket program does. Blowing it up so the vast majority of fuel is burned up before it impacts the ground is just relatively basic range safety. They haven't learned a thing since Intelsat 708's failed launch.

Well… isn’t there some sort of termination sequence that can be sent to the rocket if it goes wild? Based on movies I think US rockets have such feature.
Also… this is cringey to watch in Kerbal Space Program, seeing it IRL makes it even scarier.
24
u/SteamedGamer 2d ago
I'm guessing since was supposed to just be an engine test, they hadn't enabled the self-destruct.
→ More replies (3)12
u/ellWatully 2d ago
Termination systems aren't installed for static tests in the US either. We install inert systems to collect data on temperature and vibration, etc, but you're not planning for a test stand failure that allows the engine to escape. That's a #ReallyBadDay.
→ More replies (4)13
u/Dar_Vender 2d ago
Most countries will have a requirement to have a working flight termination system to get permission to fly. This is more of a grey area because it was meant to be a static fire. So in theory you wouldn't need to have one but if it flew off it's stand like that in most places I think the authorities would be asking some rough questions. However none of that matters because China basically do what they want. They regularly just release stages over land and just hope it doesn't hit anyone. And those stages sometimes have cancer causing toxic propellants in them that you wouldn't want to be anywhere near.

u/exoriare Interested 2d ago
And those stages sometimes have cancer causing toxic propellants in them that you wouldn't want to be anywhere near.
Water contamination is a bigger issue. The entire Columbia river system in the US was heavily contaminated with perchlorates from the shuttle's solid-rocket boosters. The EPA didn't even regulate perchlorates until 20111.
