It depends on where you live from what I’m gathering. Like some people live in big walkable cities with public transportation 24/7, while others weren’t able to receive their license because Covid shut things down and they just never got around to it. I got my license at 16, but that was 2019.
11
u/Madatsune 2d ago
I got my license during covid and it really sucked. Due to all the regulations I had maybe one hour of practice a week, often with 2-4 week gaps because of lockdowns or quarantine. Where I live private driving practice is (mostly) illegal and can cost you your chance to get a license for your whole life, so you can only practice with a driving instructor. It took forever to get used to driving because of this and I lost a ton of money because of it.

u/Marqueso-burrito 2d ago

this. my current city is not walkable whatsoever and I also commute 10 miles for work. public transpo is hit or miss and also kinda scary imo. even if I was in a walkable city, id still have a license as well as a car. I think its fun to get out of your bubble and explore whats around you within driving distance. had my license since the day I could get it and it unlocked a whole new sense of freedom for me.

Covid happened, and so I never learned, and despite the shitty public transport, i've managed to get around on my bike(s)

Same. Covid happened while I was taking the online classes for my permit test. Couldn’t practice driving until I was 19, still haven’t gotten my actual license :/

In my state the regs changed during covid to actually make it easier for folks, I have been seeing a lot of unsafe & lack of defensive driving lately & I have a theory it might be related.. my lil bro got his during that time, they legit swapped behind the wheel with a zoom class. idk if it's just that or maybe he's a dangerous driver in general, but when he asked me to teach him to drive stick, I had to cut that adventure short bc he was listening to literally nothing I said & legit almost killed someone. took an entire hour for my butthole to unclench itself, doubt I will ever get in a car with him driving again.

I'm honestly terrified of having a license and driving a car because I'm very incompetent from an undiagnosed mental illness.

u/pinkypip 2000 3d ago
I've had mine since 16 but didn't start driving regularly until 22 (didn't have a car, parents didn't let me borrow theirs). I hate driving, I have gotten somewhat used to it, but I'm still nervous to drive long distances, in inclement weather, and to new places.

I don't have mine yet. I keep putting it off, but I do really want to get my license. All I need to do is call a doctor to get my physical done so I can actually start the process again.
Because I had my permit, I tried taking the driver's test and failed at parallel parking, then my permit expired during Covid. When I went to get it renewed finally, it had been so long that I basically needed to start over.
Getting my license is a goal of mine for this year tho. And maybe a car if I'm lucky, but at least the license.

u/lil-D-energy 1998 2d ago
I don't have one but I live in the Netherlands with one of the best public transport systems, I can go almost anywhere within 3 hours just by public transport as I live in the middle of the Netherlands, and I am even within a couple hours in Germany.
I have never been in a plane and have gone to Germany, France, Belgium, England and Austria by train/bus.

COVID definitely fucked it up. It was illegal for learner drivers to learn to drive during COVID in my state. I wasn’t able to get my learners permit till months after I turned 16 (the legal age you’re allowed to drive in my state). That put everyone learning months behind if they wanted to get their license at 18.
After coming out of all of this I think a lot of people still didn’t really bother that much. I mean personally I’m very close to getting the legal amount of hours I need to get my license but I don’t have that much motivation because I don’t have anywhere to drive? It feels like a better use of my time to focus on getting a job, finishing university, stuff like that
2
u/Phantom_Wolf52 2007 3d ago
I don’t even have my permit yet and I turn 17 soon, I failed the permit test twice
2
u/Corporal_Canada 1997 3d ago
Mid 20s, and I still have my learners (I renew it every two years).
The thing is that my city has a pretty decent public transport system, and I love to walk and bike everywhere. It's nowhere near as good as say, Japan or many places in Europe, but I've never really had any major problems with it, my only issue being that it doesn't run well past 12 midnight.
My city is slowly leaning towards continually improving our transit system alongside housing, and I am all for it.
I'll still probably get my driver's license, because I like to kayak, fish, and shoot, but for 95% of what I do, I can get along fine with bus and skytrain.
2
u/Darkpsy420 2d ago
Dont need a license in Vienna really, public transport carries. There are so many costs to having a car.
Insurance, Parking, maintenance, Autobahn Vignette and probably more that i dont know.
So yeah i dont see a reason to owning a car, its not worth it for me to spend that much on it when i have public transport 24/7.
2
u/TheLineCookCat 2d ago
I just got mine now at 21 my family never taught me and I basically was bullied into it getting it despite having no idea what to do. Barely passed the test on both the written and driving portion
2
u/manofathousandnames 2000 2d ago
I got my G1 at 16, and was fully licensed by the time I left for college.
2
u/Real_TwistedVortex 2000 2d ago
Unless you don't have access to a car to take the test, I don't see any excuse to not have a license. life is significantly harder without a license. Like, some places won't even hire you if you don't have reliable transportation of your own, i.e, a car
2
u/fennforrestssearch 2d ago
If you live in any european City there is literally no need for it (in Germany its also f*cking expensive to get one)
2
u/Josro0770 2000 2d ago
I got the written one done but I haven't done the driving one. I never really liked the idea of driving ever since I was a kid so I didn't have any urges to get my licence quickly.
My mom is the one pressuring me so I'll take the test later this year, I will probably still use public transport 99% of the time.
2
u/ThomasTheDankTank 2002 2d ago
I went to the dmv for my drivers permit as a teen. Two weeks later I received a fully valid drivers license. I never took any tests.

I have mine, but I only got it last year, the day after my 22nd birthday. I just didn't really need it. Took driving classes when I was 16, got in a car accident that could have seriously injured me and got me anxious about driving, then covid hit and I had to take classes online. I only sucked it up and learned to drive over a two month period because I had to head to college two hours away.

Yeah this is true. Know too many people that just drive around with no license.
2
2
u/skcuf2 2d ago
The only reason to not have a drivers license is laziness. It's something you should get, even if you don't drive. You never know when you might be on a hike and your driver breaks their ankle and you need to get them to the hospital by driving their vehicle back.
Insert whatever scenario you want where you're with other people who drove and can no longer do so while being out of the range of society.
2
u/Smooth-Apartment-856 2d ago
I don’t understand why everyone is blaming Covid for not getting a license. The lockdowns have been over for years. There’s literally no reason you couldn’t have done it long ago, Covid or not.

I do have mine, and never really thought of it at a "Gen Z Thing" to not have your license, but now that I think of it, a surprisingly large amount of my social circle doesn't drive. Granted, some of them just can't afford a car, but there's still quite a few that are more than stable enough to afford a used car and just don't care enough to learn for one reason or another.

I learned to drive both thanks to the help of my friends and family and then on my own as well as I progressed. I was supposed to get my license back in 2021, but Covid was a thing and I had to wait though eventually I finally got my license 4 days after my birthday a year and a half ago.

Only just got my ID (parents couldn't agree on my last name when I was a baby, government lost my birth certificate when they were supposed to be fixing my last name and then said "nah, you can't have it now. Go somehow get a court order without an ID first". Went to the social security office a week or two ago and got my ID with that 5 days later.)... I think I'll wait a little bit. I'd likely end up crashing anyways, but it'd be nice to have for emergencies. Especially given that I did take drivers' Ed for that reason
1
1
u/Th34sa8arty 2d ago
I never got an opportunity when I was a teenager because of a neglectful and apathetic family. They refused to teach me or pay for driver's ed classes. Being a broke teenager with no idea how the world works, I didn't have $400 to just drop for driver's ed; oh, and affording a car, forget it.
I still don't as an adult because it's still too expensive, and cars, including ones that are absolute pieces of shit, are just unaffordable now.

For context: i live in Italy and in most cities public transportation is decent.
I (20) have both a car and bike license, however i only own a motorcycle as i don't really need a car and the motorcycle is more of a hobby than an essential mean of transportation, i could go to work or grocery shopping by bus no problem.
My roomate (also 20) on the other hand refuses to get a license, he takes public transport everywhere, he thought about getting it just in case but eventually turned it down for now.
Most of my other friends have a car license but drive like 2/3 times a month, we usually take trains and buses to where we need to meet, unless it's in an hard to reach place and we take one or two cars and go all together.
I did have a couple bad experiences on public transportation and completely stopped using it for almost an year, but eventually i got over it as bad experiences happen not only there but everywhere inside and out of the house, and goddamn if it is convenient.

Still don't have my license. There have been times I wished I had it but honestly ive foujd you only really notice it on grocery day lol. It's definitely more common for people to get their license later in their teens, but I don't know how much more common it is. Accurate for me. I don't wanna own a car, getting the license is relatively expensive here in brazil (and let's not talk about how many minimum wages even a crap car from the 2000s will set you back), and unless it's packed with people I'll gladly take transit to wherever I must go (or bike, which doubles as an exercise/hobby)

Cusp former teacher here; actually seems to be a mixed bag, at least in my area. I live by a very large and extremely car dependent city (Fuck cop city please fix MARTA and make it USABLE if I try and take that semi functional train to where I work now I have to go up a 6 story tall and VERY steep escalator and nearly shit myself every time) and it seems like some kids would rather ask friends or parents or budget for Uber trips than drive themselves. Some kids can't imagine not being able to drive. For a lot of kids it's about how unaffordable cars are (it's gotten better but the $1000 '98 Camry of my teenage years is a fond and distant memory) and how expensive it is to maintain a car. For a lot of kids I also suspect sensory issues that come with driving.
I think it's unfair and unreasonable to try and paint this subject (really most subjects like this) with a broad brush. Kids are a diverse group of people who all have their own individual thoughts and feelings. 🤷
