Characters who show designs you prefer over the comic version? I’ll start COMIC SPOILERS

I like how they drew Allen in the show, the design is similar to the book but feels cleaner.

u/Fickle_Writing3967 May 13 '24
Can he compete with this though?

u/Imaginary-Picture-35 May 13 '24
We’ll see when this scene happens in the show

u/Eomb May 14 '24
Did the scene not happen before he let himself be captured in the show?

31
u/AbiyBattleSpell Mauler Twin (Female) May 14 '24
Ya show is neat but when they did the I thought you where stronger scene it didn’t hit the same
Screen like these will prob just not be as good even if the designs are pretty good and on point overall
297
u/pie_nap_pull Darkwing May 13 '24
I can’t decide if I prefer Shrinking Ray or Shrinking Rae. But Red Rush definitely looks better. Also I think the Martians are cooler in the show but they also look way more like the DC Martians which is more of a downside.
118
u/dandaman1983 May 13 '24
Shrinking Rae definitely has more screen time and personality in the show imo, I'm glad they didn't kill her like in the comics.
60
u/Chance_Meaning_2078 May 14 '24
Hell even the scene of her getting defeated was much better than how the og Shrinking Ray died lol. Dude literally just got eaten and never mentioned again
21
u/Thatonedregdatkilyu May 14 '24
I'm still not even sure how OG Ray died. He didn't get chewed and Komodo died not 10 seconds later so he probably could have crawled back out.
15
u/Chance_Meaning_2078 May 14 '24
Actually talking about Komodo, what are his powers? I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have the powers of a Komodo Dragon, but if he does then I guess we conclude that his stomach acid melted Shrinking Ray since we do know how acidic their stomach acid is. But if he doesn’t have anything like that, then who tf knows what happened to him
573
u/pippa420 Rex Splode May 13 '24
Rex! His comic design was already great but the show overall just gives him a completely different energy. According to the art book they wanted him to be as different as possible to mark design-wise which is why he has visors instead of goggles in the show
157
58
u/hydrohawkx8 May 13 '24
I didn’t even realize he had goggles in the comics
5
u/ItsBlitz21 May 14 '24
I didn’t remember until I went back to the comics and wow, I really did not like the goggles. The visor just works better.
41
30
u/MikeWithoutMic Rex Splode May 13 '24
You can actually see his eyes and he shows his face often in the show.
43
u/Chrome_X_of_Hyrule William Clockwell May 13 '24
Also the fact that he has darker skin now like his VA I guess implies that he's Greek? Jason Mantzoukas often gets cast in Latino roles so maybe the artists thought that he was Latino and tried to make him the same ethnicity as his actor, same as Mark and Debbie or maybe he's just a dark skinned Greek like Jason Mantzoukas. Not complaining at all I think he looks better like this, I do just wonder why they changed it.

13
1
u/SamusCroft May 14 '24
Really? I think she looks blander in the show.
1
u/LuvingLyla May 14 '24
The two toned lips did it for me and something about her face looks better in the show, I’m pretty sure it’s the lips/eyes. Those puckered fish lips was a no go
189
u/sfinney2 Robot May 13 '24
Anissa's is barely any different that I can tell, but I do think they adapted it well since it's relatively faithful.
Monster Girl dressing in more adult clothes in the show (like a baggy shirt that no longer fits right) instead of like a child's dress obviously makes way more sense.
Going the other way I don't like the shorts they gave Eve... If they had to choose between stay the same, skirt, shorts or full length leggings then shorts is clearly the worst choice imo.
There really aren't a lot of other design changes I can think of, it's mostly a broad change in art style and a lot of little things like Cecil being thinner.
37
u/Arthur_189 May 13 '24
Yeah Eve kinda looks like she’s wearing mens underwear lol
79
u/ThisHatRightHere May 13 '24
Eh, they're basically just nike pro style shorts that plenty of women wear.
51
u/KaiTheFilmGuy Amber Bennett May 13 '24
This exactly. I can imagine a woman wearing something like those IRL, which is probably the decision they went with.

u/Dumoney Donald Ferguson May 13 '24
Omni Man, without question. It took them awhile to settle on his consistent look in the comics, and even then I dont think it holds a candle to Omni Man off the bat in the show.

u/Medium-Science9526 Comic Fan May 13 '24 edited May 13 '24
I'll go Amber Bennett being moddeled after her VA:
Anissa for me it's negligible as the show only really changes her upper lip which has a bit of the Kim Possible issue, and the hairstyle being Cory Walker's design of her.
Edit: Also why is it that image of Anissa to reference from the comıc?
112
u/Shawnessy May 13 '24
I've read the first to compendiums now, and I really appreciate the changes they gave to Amber. She's a much better character now. Ditching the cheating/not cheating angle, as well as the swap when Anissa shows up. She got more meaningful screen time, which made the breakup heavier.
29
u/ThisHatRightHere May 13 '24
Amber in the comics reeks of 2000s-era blonde college girl tropes. Part of me feels they were purposefully playing into them, but it definitely would've been pretty terrible nowadays.
38
u/robertrobertsonson May 13 '24
They still dropped the ball with her on season 1, but they fixed it pretty well in season 2

u/FrostyMagazine9918 May 14 '24
To be honest, my real issue with Ambar knowing is that is doesn't meaningfully change the point of the arc that Mark is meant to experience with his love life, or ultimately Ambar's role in the story of Invincible. Her knowing or not is irrelevant to Mark keeping a secret, but her knowing doesn't make her character any more important in anyway that truthfully matters.
I find the change puzzling, but not bad.
85
u/DarthButtz May 13 '24
Amber is my answer too. Went from the most generic white girl I've ever seen to a better design that also fits her voice actor.
33
u/KaiTheFilmGuy Amber Bennett May 13 '24
They also gave her hobbies and a personality. Like, that's so important for characterization and some dudes cannot write women for shit.
10
u/WauliePalnuts01 May 13 '24
i thought season 2 really improved most issues people had with her character in season 1
2
u/Clamper May 13 '24
It should pick up from here in general. I read the comic and compendium 2 is when they get better about stupid garbage that needs changing.
12
u/Collrafa The Mauler Twins May 13 '24
Ehh, I feel like it was a tradeoff. Amber in the comics was barely ever present, and the little screentime she had was just scenes of Mark leaving her stranded. She also found out Mark was Invincible way later than she did in the show.
Because of those differences, I found it easier to relate to Amber. The show gave her more characterization, sure, but it sorta backfired in that people ended up hating her. Comics didn't have that issue because of the sort of blank personality that she had. There was no reason to hate her, since her character was just "Mark's normal gf". And as Mark's normal gf, we (or at least I) can't help but feel for her due to how bad a bf Mark was.

I like that they made Anissa look like she’s built. She’s a warrior so having those massive delts and toned arms makes sense.
16
u/Neospood May 13 '24 edited May 17 '24
Rex Splode. I think the visor is a definite improvement over the goggles, and the brown gloves and boots do a good job of making sure there isn't too much red and yellow on his costume. The lines on the top sides & back of his mask also help to make it feel slightly less empty.
Omnipotus. I like his new black eyes and triangle pupils. I can take or leave the nipples, but I'm used to 'em.
The Martians. The comics made them look just a biiit too much like the Flaxans, so I'm glad they're more distinct now.
Atom Eve. I like the shorts. I think they're better not just for modesty, but also for practicality. I couldn't imagine myself sitting with a bare butt.
War Woman. More modesty aside: I like the blue cape, one-horned helmet, and her braids. Those in particular look pretty cool to me.

I actually have a question as someone who has never been into comics but is just a show watcher. I see the panels shared from the comics here all the time (I don't care about spoilers so much) but the artwork is wildly different for each character depending on the issue, I guess. Is that normal? I mean some of the artwork I've seen from the show is straight up bananas lol
3
u/BrotToast263 Tech Jacket May 14 '24
since Invincible was made over a span of multiple years, the artwork improved from the banana-style in the earlier issues to the digital looking quality of later issues
don't ask me what happened to the artstyle in the last part of the story tho, I have no idea

Both Anissa are great to be fair.
Show version seems more angry, calculative, cold and violent.
Comics version seems more impulsive, bloodlusty and a little bit crazy.
Both are scary as Fuck, can't wait to see conquest animated.
Hot take : i really enjoy amber's version in the show way more. In the comics, she wasnt very memorable, the average high school blondie who never understand what is happening to her.
Both her physique and personnality were forgetable.
Amber from the show seemed rude at first, specially when she started realising mark was lying to her everytime without being sure of what was going on.
But once she aknowledged his secret, she was VERY mature and suportive to him, allways understanding when he was cancelling their dates, never crossing thé limits with someone else or criticising mark with her Friends behind his back like comic's Amber..
The reason they broke up was also way better in the show.
In the comics, mark got bored and cheated on her with Eve, and Amber got mad at mark for cancelling their dates and nearly cheated on him with Gary... Then they broke up just like that, like nothing really happened, even if she was the first person mark showed his true feelings about his dad to.
In the show, they tryed their best, both of them, trying to comunicate well, to be compréhensive, to understand each others and make efforts.. but the truth is, when you are dating a comic mc who is fighting opponents WAY stronger and smarter than him, if you dont have mj or lois lane lvl of plot armor, it's just impossible.
They both really loved each others and could have lived with their différences.. but the reality was to hard, so they broke up for very mature reasons, and mark didn't jumped on Eve right after like nothing happened.
So even if most people hated her and (that's disgusting) seemed to enjoy the perspective of her being abused later in the show, Amber is my favorite change from the comics. Also, her look is way better since she is not just Eve with shorter blond hair.
1
u/Huihejfofew May 13 '24
Honestly, I prefer every show design over the comic designs for the most part. The comic looks like it was drawn in the 80s. The show is much more modern in its design. Only boarding the end of the comic to the designs start becoming modern I imagine the artists are changing.

u/Otherwise_Coconut_32 May 13 '24
I'm a big fan of her design on this cover, but she doesn't look quite as good in the panels. The show design is decent.

Eve in the show is way better imo. In the comics she gives off the vibe of a snobby teenager and looks way older than she actually is half the time. Eve in the show actually looks her age and she also doesn’t suffer from some of the goofy facial expressions of her comic counterpart
