Here a quick question what is your opinion on Shrinking Ray being a girl in the show COMIC SPOILERS

Sex/race swapping is highly dependent on the character writing and placement. But in this case, a nothing character was race swapped into a female almost nothing character. Makes almost no difference.

I will say though, her being a woman in the show made her (almost) demise a little more visceral. Might be sexist to feel that way, but it was effective.

that's one thing i appreciate in this show- doesn't matter if you're a guy, gal, or enby pal. you can and will be brutalized.

plus, viltrumite hands are rated e for everyone! how nice of them to make sure nobody feels left out! maybe viltrum isn't so bad.

is this is true gender equality? i think this is true gender equality.

Basically this... to my mind it doesn't matter if character is race, gender or sexuality swapped unless part of character arc is dependent upon what they change (or if they fail to consider the implications of them).

It can also help if they change the character slightly to add extra detail based upon what they've changed but only if it doesn't overshadow/significantly alter the original text. e.g. changing amber to be black might have informed their decision to have her help out at a soup kitchen in Titan's neighbourhood and it simply adds detail rather than removing anything from the adaptation.

What I like about the writers is that they listened to the feedback about Amber and made her much more tolerable in the second season. They didn’t pull the cop out that some production groups do by accusing the fanbase of hating her because of the race change alone. I was pleasantly surprised.

Oh yeah, everyone hated her in s1. She’s one the most hated side characters of all time. But most would agree with me when I say that s2 amber has dramatically improved my opinion about the character. I was actually upset by their break up in the new ep

Having read the comics now it seems like she was probably the character that most needed to change. At least among the main characters early on.

In the comics She is cartoonishly naive and unaware of mark’s situation for a really long time. She also has little agency. Iirc her role would have been much larger and I believe if they had made her like she was in the comics they would have gotten flak. So they probably over corrected in season 1.

Some of her behavior felt like teenage stuff to do and some of it was maybe not truly understanding the gravity of what Mark was up against. Which makes sense, did he really get it yet either? Definitely an absurd amount of vitriol for her online.

yeah i think a lot of fans get mad if the main character is called out in any way by a different character. it was totally valid for her to be upset mark endlessly lied, regardless of what we know

Yeah, like, even if its to save the world, lying is still lying. Mark kept Amber in the dark for a little while and if you found out something like that about your partner you'd probably be upset too. It doesn't matter that, logically, his actions make sense. Emotionally, amber had every reason to be upset. And then people were acting like she was this hateful horrible person over it 🙄 I'm glad those people aren't in my own life because they sound miserable

This 100%. I’ve never had a problem with Amber’s character watching season 1 and was surprised to go online and see everyone vehemently hate her. Amber and Mark’s relationship has gotten really good development in season 2 and I still see people each week complain and say “just break up already” or that Amber being too nice in s2 feels like whiplash from her s1 portrayal. I don’t care if I get downvoted for this but a lot of Amber complaints feel like thinly veiled racism (and sexism ngl)

I think they are a pretty decent couple so far. Like do these people think romantic partners simply never fight? Especially when Amber had every reason to be upset. Overall I do think interpersonal relationships are handled slightly better in season 2 but I don't think anything was wrong with Mark and Amber's relationship in season 1 either.

I don't care they changing Amber because she is voiced by Zazzie Beets, and work that she looks like her voice actress, also, i didn't knew the character before the show.

Nah it's not cause she's a woman, it's cause of the specific woman VAing for her. Gray Delisle is incredibly talented and experienced and between the animation of her expanding before being crushed and decompressing and her guttural crunchy sounds it just really sold the moment.

  • comics Ray just got swallowed, no crunch at all. I'm show only so I can't say that much but largely having seen the comic scenes that inspired the show scenes so far I much prefer show Rae. She seems to have more to do, more to suffer and learn from, and again, Gray Delisle (VA for monster girl, Kate, Azula from ATLA amoung other things).
