I wonder if mark is subconsciously holding back his punches or if he is truly very weak so far. Probably some of both but I'm concerned about future fights with vilrumites.

He’s 100% holding back. We saw what he’s actually capable of when he goes against a viltrumite with the intent to kill in episode 4, but we know that mark is struggling with not letting himself become like his father or the other viltrumites, hence his refusal to even pretend to say he’ll take over earth.

His compassion for earth and humanity is exactly why he needs to let his strength loose, just like Gohan in DBZ.

I, too, remember when Gohan was cool for 9 whole episodes before they ruined his character.

world-threatening evil

"no i can't"

friend with kind soul dies

goes angy, wrecks shit, becomes cool

stops training and shit gets bad

learns his lesson, "gotta be strong to protect everyone"

trains last minute, fails to defeat bad guy because arrogant

oh well, gotta train some more, dad will handle it until then

never trains again

repeat like 3 times

He does go back to training in DB Super after realizing he has become so weak that he can't protect earth for even a little bit against Freiza when Goku and Vegeta are off earth.

He really showed his mettle in the Tournament of Power.

My issue is that he should have realized that after the Buu Saga, where the same exact thing happened... Or again after the Beerus Saga.

Even after the Golden Frieza Saga, he again stopped until the Exhibition Tournament reminded him again that he shouldn't stop training.

And then guess what? He was decent at the ToP but was still shown that he needs to continue training - which he didn't. Namely, in Super Hero he was again not training in any way, shape or form and literally said "why should I train when Goku and Vegeta are around?" when Piccolo asked him about what would happen if the Earth was in danger again - and, naturally, then the Earth was in danger and the only reason they won is because Gohan then received a Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan-level power-up out of nowhere in the form of Beast Gohan.

I love Gohan and Beast is a cool form, but his writing has been lazy, repetitive and downright bad. It's just the same thing over and over again, to the point where Beast Gohan vs Cell Max is literally just a Gohan SSJ2 vs Perfect Cell rehash/homage.

I agree with your point. I think the way they have written gohan's character is that he is the anti-saiyan.

He doesn't really enjoy fighting. He likes getting stronger, sure, but at the end of the day, it's just not his passion like it is for other saiyans.

u/Zankman Apr 04 '24

Oh I do get the intention, he's clearly more human than saiyan and doesn't enjoy fighting, but he's also implied to be intelligent and caring... I just think that ONE close call would make him realise that he has the responsibility of doing his best to protect everyone.

You mean in episode 4, that's the episode where he fights viltrumites with nolan and almost kills a viltrumite

u/moistpony Mar 28 '24

My bad lmao, it was 3am when I wrote that and I was so tired, oops

16

u/Justinyeethahahahaha Mar 28 '24

to be fair, anissa is faster than nolan and it seemed like the viltrumites in the bug planet were scrubs comparatively

12

u/macedonianmoper Mar 28 '24

I was wondering if she's better in every regard on just in speed, she still respected Nolan's strength so I'm curious on how good of a fighter she actually is.

13

u/crab_spy_ Mar 28 '24

I don’t think he was holding back against this one after what she dis to amber. I think maybe anissa is just much stronger than the other two. She seems to be the general’s right hand, that counts for something surely.

15

u/moistpony Mar 28 '24

After the fight when he’s with amber he said that he wanted to kill anissa and he could feel the parts of him that are nolan bubbling up to the surface. It looks like he’s ashamed for feeling that way and to me it sounded like he was implying that he suppressed that urge to kill anissa because he didn’t want to be like his father and escalate the fight into being even more violent than it was and risk putting the cruise ship survivors in more danger.

Besides we’re going to get a glimpse of what it looks like when mark isn’t holding back in episode 8, which is likely going to end on a cliffhanger and then the start of season 3 is when we will see mark let go of all his inhibition.

Idk how much you care about minor powerscaling spoilers, but if you want an answer to your curiosity: at this point in the story Mark is just weaker than Anissa, who would be considered a fairly high tier Viltrumite.

3

u/moistpony Mar 29 '24

I read the comics, i know that objectively he’s weaker than anissa for sure but in episode 4 we saw him hold his own and even overpower thula. I’m just saying that we have seen what mark is capable of even he stops holding back and fights with some intent to kill and that was not the mark we saw during his fight with anissa

6

u/adrnjn Mar 28 '24

We saw what he’s actually capable of when he goes against a viltrumite with the intent to kill in episode 1,

wait when? what did i miss in ep 1

2

u/Lshotform Mar 28 '24

why would he be holding back if the entire planet is on the line lmao

2

u/Xignum Mar 31 '24

Plus, if he was stronger than Anissa and he can't win because he was holding back, why is he struggling against the sea Kaiju?

Saying Mark was stronger and only held back means he also held back against the sea kaiju, which makes zero sense.

1

u/wioneo Mar 30 '24

Isn't he also just weaker, though? If they get stronger with age, he'd presumably be the weakest one we've seen by several orders of magnitude. I don't know if he gets bonus points some other way, but there's no logical reason for him to be able to handle literally any of them.

3

u/moistpony Mar 30 '24

Mark overpowered and could have killed thula in episode 4 and she’s WAY older than mark and has more combat experience. You’re also forgetting that viltrumites get stronger by pushing themselves beyond their physical limits and mark’s fight with nolan in season 1 did just that and he never backed down and kept trying to fight despite being beaten to within an inch of his life, so after he recovered from that fight mark got significantly stronger.

so viltrumites = saiyans?
