He’s 100% holding back. We saw what he’s actually capable of when he goes against a viltrumite with the intent to kill in episode 4, but we know that mark is struggling with not letting himself become like his father or the other viltrumites, hence his refusal to even pretend to say he’ll take over earth.

His compassion for earth and humanity is exactly why he needs to let his strength loose, just like Gohan in DBZ.

I, too, remember when Gohan was cool for 9 whole episodes before they ruined his character.

world-threatening evil

"no i can't"

friend with kind soul dies

goes angy, wrecks shit, becomes cool

stops training and shit gets bad

learns his lesson, "gotta be strong to protect everyone"

trains last minute, fails to defeat bad guy because arrogant

oh well, gotta train some more, dad will handle it until then

never trains again

repeat like 3 times

He does go back to training in DB Super after realizing he has become so weak that he can't protect earth for even a little bit against Freiza when Goku and Vegeta are off earth.

He really showed his mettle in the Tournament of Power.

My issue is that he should have realized that after the Buu Saga, where the same exact thing happened... Or again after the Beerus Saga.

Even after the Golden Frieza Saga, he again stopped until the Exhibition Tournament reminded him again that he shouldn't stop training.

And then guess what? He was decent at the ToP but was still shown that he needs to continue training - which he didn't. Namely, in Super Hero he was again not training in any way, shape or form and literally said "why should I train when Goku and Vegeta are around?" when Piccolo asked him about what would happen if the Earth was in danger again - and, naturally, then the Earth was in danger and the only reason they won is because Gohan then received a Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan-level power-up out of nowhere in the form of Beast Gohan.

I love Gohan and Beast is a cool form, but his writing has been lazy, repetitive and downright bad. It's just the same thing over and over again, to the point where Beast Gohan vs Cell Max is literally just a Gohan SSJ2 vs Perfect Cell rehash/homage.

I agree with your point. I think the way they have written gohan's character is that he is the anti-saiyan.

He doesn't really enjoy fighting. He likes getting stronger, sure, but at the end of the day, it's just not his passion like it is for other saiyans.

Oh I do get the intention, he's clearly more human than saiyan and doesn't enjoy fighting, but he's also implied to be intelligent and caring... I just think that ONE close call would make him realise that he has the responsibility of doing his best to protect everyone.
