Glad they gave Bulletproof that role-call scene with Black Samson.

Great summary of The Guardians' current dysfunction and, plus, it gave some degree of depth to the most one note member of the current Guardians lineup.

After the complete lack of details or scenes with Rae, pre gut-check, I respect the choice to give Bulletproof something.

You think Samson would reevaluate his nickname once he went bald... it's really hard to take him seriously when the guy he's named himself after had power from his hair.

Right now he's like Nega Samson. Taking power from being bald.

u/EldritchGoatGangster Mar 28 '24

Should rename himself 'Black Picard' instead, honestly.

45

u/karateema Abraham Lincoln Mar 28 '24

Right now he's like Nega Samson

That doesn't sound that good

His ability to somehow be more colorful, while standing in the shadows, remains one of the strongest superpowers in fiction to this day lol.

6

u/karateema Abraham Lincoln Mar 29 '24

Yeah it's unmatched

28

u/Krams Mar 28 '24

I mean he did lose his powers probably around the time he went bald

32

u/Abedeus Mar 28 '24

So basically the best way to get him back to old strength for good would've been to give him hair transplants?

16

u/SciFiXhi Doc Seismic Mar 28 '24

Get him that HEROgaine

5

u/GreenGoblinNX Mar 29 '24

Holy fuck that was terrible.

Take my upvote.

With the way Cecil uses that Teleporter, you know he's got budget for it

1

u/Abedeus Mar 29 '24

Especially how frivolously he uses it. Literal phone call situations or live video streams...

6

u/macedonianmoper Mar 28 '24

I mean he did lose his powers before season 1 so the name still fit at that time. But yeah in s2 it's outdated, get hair or lose you powers, but pick one man!

Glad they gave Bulletproof that role-call scene with Black Samson.

Careful, sudden character development or even 3 lines in a row can be fatal for a character - in Robert Kirkman's universe.

u/LordCaptain Mar 29 '24

Interesting that Samson said they werent the best team on the planet the same episode that Cecil said the "backup teams" would be like feeding heroes to the wolves when he already had the guardians on the way.

Curious what other powerful heroes are out there.

4

u/Kaserbeam Mar 29 '24

maybe the stronger superbeings either don't work for cecil, arent that strong (weaker than the OG Guardians) or are more neutral/antihero/selfish.

Honestly, I didn't care for the scene. Felt like an exposition dump about things we, as an audience, are already aware of, but with quirky quips. Yes, he know Monster Girl and Rudy aren't getting along. Yes, we know Rex-Splode is going through stuff. Yes, we know the Immortal is old and traumatized. Yes, we know Shrinking Rae is in the hospital.

And yes, we know Black Samson is bald. We don't need all of this spelled out.

It didn't even give that much insight into Bulletproof. All I got from that scene is that he is bitter and probably projects, but we didn't need a whole scene expositing what is happening with the guardians.

So far, I know nothing about Bulletproof and really only know his powerset because of the Invisible mobile game (did they mention it earlier? It is hard to remember because there are such long breaks between seasons and episodes). I'd rather his first significant scene not to be telling exposition about other characters that the audience already knows. I'd like to learn more about him.

2

u/Zankman Mar 31 '24

Fair point, maybe a scene of them fighting some minor villains where you a) get to see his powers b) get to see the team being dysfunctional as the culmination of the factors we know c) get him to talk similarly to how he did here.

3

u/masterfroo24 Mar 31 '24

What even are his powers? They brought him on the team as "extra strenght", put what can he even do?

4

u/Zankman Mar 31 '24

Seems like he is a generic brick, hence the name. So he is likely like Immortal, just weaker - like Samson.

2

u/charonill Apr 02 '24

Bulletproof was originally the name and costume design for Mark, before the change to Invincible. Kirkman then decided to bring him in as a separate character with the same power set, but weaker.

1

u/DaveAlt19 Apr 02 '24

The audience already knows the Guardians are a pretty shitty team, but the show keeps saying how amazing they are.

Instead of having any character development or actions or motivations informed or affected by that, the show lazily addresses it by just having a character spell it out.

6

u/musecorn Mar 30 '24

When Donald told Cecil they could send in the guardians to fight Anissa, I was like Jesus christ don't do that lol

7

u/Ghoti76 Mar 31 '24

lmao fr same i was like bro no i can't take any more funerals this season 😭

3

u/80SW08 Mar 31 '24

Yeah they brought him in just to be a background character who does nothing except fuck everybody over on the Mars mission.

Even then this scene is just him chatting shit.

So far his feats are: fuck up, talk smack

u/DangerousCrime Apr 03 '24

how did rex survive a bullet to the head? Does that happen more often than not?

-21

u/QueasyIsland Mar 28 '24

I agree but the Cecil is doing all this for White America line by Bulletproof was just cringe to me and forced by the writers. I never got the inklings Cecil is that kinda guy, and it’s evident to everyone his priority is the entire world before anything, not just White Americans.

82

u/AmIClandestine Mar 28 '24

That's probably just bulletproofs outlook, characters having their own perspectives and opinions is what makes them characters after all.

-10

u/QueasyIsland Mar 28 '24

Totally it just felt sort of out of place in a great speech. I understood his entire sentiment and he honed in things which needed to be addressed, that just came outta nowhere as the audience hasn’t seen that tone/vibe from Cecil

48

u/Odd-Emergency-6597 Mar 28 '24

Nah it felt right in place to me. I loved everything about Bulletproofs speech

19

u/Lucifer_Crowe Mar 28 '24

It being between him and Black Samson felt right yeah

It doesn't necessarily mean it's true

He slates Rudy when he's consistently been the one carrying that whole squad.

10

u/ILoveRegenHealth Mar 29 '24

I don't think you're from America. That line fits and hits hard considering what's going on in the country.

Also, Robert Kirkman made Invincible an Asian character, because he noticed every superhero main character was nearly 98% white, even at a time whites were nowhere 98% of the population.

2

u/Anjunabeast Mar 29 '24

nearly 98%

Just like Donald it’s poetic

4

u/MyARhold30Shots Mar 29 '24

It's not out of place, you just disagree with him lmao

Meh it’s Reddit, as soon as people see 0 or -1 they’ll just go along and bandwagon enmasse. It’s a very disingenuous way of upholding discussion and actually goes against the etiquette and rules of the website. But yeah, it was genuinely a raised eyebrow moment,no pretext just something thrown in there at an attempt to send a message that doesn’t follow the character in reference’s behaviour or morals

12

u/240Nordey Damien Darkblood Mar 28 '24

Characters can have biased viewpoints due to their backgrounds. A character can dislike white bureaucrats the same way a character can dislike immigrants... therefore, it's in their character to say biased things...

Also, disregarding one line spoken by one character simply because YOU don't like the "messaging" it seems to give off may be a you problem.

-1

u/QueasyIsland Mar 28 '24

Where have we ever seen that’s in Bulletproof’s character to have that sentiment

6

u/krilltucky Mar 29 '24

have you considered that those words are a part of his character that we haven't seen yet because we literally haven't seen shit from this guy?

do character traits not reveal themselves after the first scene a character is in?

6

u/Emergency_Fig_6390 Mar 29 '24

Just now we just saw it. They’re developing his character and that sentiment is a part of that

u/PeaWordly4381 Mar 29 '24

People like you: EVERYONE IS SUCH A SNOWFLAKE WHO GETS OFFENDED BY EVERYTHING THESE DAYS

I was under the assumption that "Cecil is doing all this for White America" isn't meant to be taken at face value. The entire scene, it really felt less like "Cecil is racist" and more like, "Bulletproof has a lot of baggage and, as a result, has a chip on his shoulder and assumes the worst out of everyone."

It should be noted that during the entire scene, he was taking the most uncharitable observation about everyone. I don't think he was supposed to come off as likable in that scene.

2

u/Majestic-Pension1527 Apr 01 '24

Completely reasonable that a young black man character in a story taking place in a kinda-modern America would think that. Even if you don't agree with what Bulletproof said, that is perfectly expected for him. Don't always assume it's about pushing a message just because what a character says is part of the message. The problem is when it doesn't fit.

2

u/Dacnis Apr 01 '24

Someone seems offended😏❄️
