Holy shit that was an unexpected announcement...they really said fuck it and made it official. No event no build up.

229

u/Pyrocy779 Master Chief Sep 08 '20

I mean, they’ve had plenty of opportunity to build up. The damn thing’s been known for awhile, and we’re 2 months from launch with no official announcement... Kinda glad it got leaked, was getting annoying tbh.

Thank you, finally someone other than my self has recognized BCPack. The Microsoft team has been working on this for years and is the counter tech to PS5 "super duper fast" SSD.

6

u/SpaceGhostxSNRS Sep 08 '20

To be fair a lot of developers are saying the PS5 SSD is pretty fast

7

u/viking78 Sep 08 '20

That’s not how it works. That is for compressing the data between the SSD and the RAM, so more data can be loaded faster. Download size will be the same.

58

u/DogAteMyWookie Sep 08 '20

SSD may be small but that's where the peripherals come in to play

59

u/dankmemer440 Sep 08 '20

I read on another thread that game sizes could still be smaller than current ones because current ones require file duplication to speed up loading times. Since ssds don't require this, 512 gb should hold a bit more than it does currently

22

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '20

u/Pat_Son Founder Sep 08 '20

At the very least, you hopefully won't have to download and store the 4K textures on the Series S, so the same game won't have the same install size on both the Series S and Series X.

21

u/WhipTheLlama Sep 08 '20

you hopefully won't have to download and store the 4K textures on the Series S

Yes, that's also what I'm thinking. The 512GB drive on the S may end up storing more games than the 1TB drive on the X.

2

u/dankmemer440 Sep 08 '20

Oh yeah, that makes sense. But, I'm not complaining too much for that price point

2

u/qwertyfish99 Founder Sep 08 '20

Ok but that's not going to happen instantly lol - especially when games still support the xbox one. Not really all that relevant - that's always been the case no?

6

u/Kamalen Sep 08 '20

Gonna be a couple years before coming true. And it will not shrink already released Smart Delivery games.

2

u/dankmemer440 Sep 08 '20

Yeah, that's a fair point. Hopefully those expandable ssds are relatively cheap

2

u/VagueSomething Founder Sep 08 '20

That's optimistic. The game size from 360 to One was a size increase of ten times for the average game. It was almost the same for OG to 360. What's more likely to happen because of the SSD is that we don't see games increase by a factor of 10 and instead only see them increasing in size more like two or 3 times.

This means rather than how 4Gb to 8Gb 360 average became 40Gb to 80Gb One, we won't definitely see 400Gb XSX and instead will see maybe 100Gb to 200Gb range for game sizes.

It would take a few years for devs to fully optimise for SSD but remember that after a few years with the tech you see games increase in performance as devs learn to take full advantage. CoD WarZone being like 300Gb is very likely to be close to the average future size and it is why the SSD has held back this new generation on storage due to costs. 1Tb barely functioned for the current gen, external SSD cards are going to be an essential.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '20

We'll get instant reduction from the new texture compression tech that is significant as well

2

u/Teek37 Sep 08 '20

Also, factoring in smart delivery, I wouldn't be surprised if the Series S just filters out all 4k level textures and elements from the install. That could free up a lot of space, and also reduce download times in combination with the high SSD speed.

15

u/RipCity77 Sep 08 '20

So I’m a tech dipshit. Can someone explain is this equal to the Xbox series x just with out a disk drive ?

35

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '20 edited Sep 08 '20

No, it's got a less beefy gpu and other components but they use the same next generation parts, for example, there a far fewer CUs but they're RDNA2 CUs just like the Series X. This basically allows it to be far cheaper while offering a similar performance at a lower resolution and maybe lower frame rate (1080p vs 4k/8k).

4

u/ajk78 Sep 08 '20

Is the SSD the same speed as the Series X one?

9

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '20

They sound like the same NVMe custom drives just that the Series S has half the storage capacity, it'd be VERY expensive for Microsoft to develop 2 state of the art SSDs at once so I'm pretty sure they would be the same speed and everything, again, with different capacities.

19

u/Steakpiegravy Sep 08 '20

Half the storage, no disc drive, and one third the graphics power of the Series X. Everything else should be the same. If you're on a 1080p TV, that's next gen games for the next 7 years without having to upgrade the TV.

→ More replies (5)

2

u/Re-toast Founder Sep 08 '20

It's like a Series X but for 1080p/1440p gaming instead of 4K.

It's not as powerful as a Series X but it doesn't have to be since it's not targeting 4K gaming.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '20

Not native 4K, but 4K gaming yes.

I assume the ML capabilities MS mentioned are used to upscale from 1440p to 4K

u/Brummiesteven Sep 08 '20

I have no idea how but for once the U.K. didn’t get screwed on this. We normally get the same number - so £299 in this case. Xbox U.K. have announced the Series S is £249.99!

133

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '20

The U.K. is one of Xbox’s strong markets so I’m glad they’ve decided to go that route with the pricing. £250 makes it a massively appealing purchase for a lot of people.

Xbox is popular with kids here and you’d think it’s common for kids to play their console on a 2nd TV in the home (either their bedroom or a second living room away from the main family TV). I’d think that 2nd TV is far more likely to be 1080p if the main TV is 4K (that’s what it is for my house - old TV moved to the snug when we bought a 4K).

So this could be a really popular purchase.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '20

I'd say playstation is more popular with kids, it has spiderman.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '20

Obviously PlayStation is more popular by absolute numbers you’re right - but anecdotally, I was surprised when lockdown started we had a clear out and I had a bunch of old PlayStation 4 games that I thought I’d offer to any of the families on our street for their kids.

All the other parents replied to say their kids had Xboxes. Since my circle (in our 30s) are so heavily weighted to PlayStation I was a bit surprised by this.

9

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '20

Its more of a clique thing where a bunch of people no matter the age decide to get the same thing. Usually for an exclusive or two.

And I wasn't saying just by numbers either, there will be more under 10's on playstation than on xbox mostly because spiderman, little kids go fucking nuts for spiderman.

23

u/szarzujacy_karczoch Sep 08 '20

It's gonna sell like hot cakes

80

u/flyingalbatross1 Founder Sep 08 '20

£250 UK is an absolute stormer. Next gen gaming at £250.

I can't see the PS5 digital being £250.

74

u/gotanewusername Sep 08 '20

Nor should it be really.
This is a lower spec Xbox, at a lower price.
The digital PS5 is the same spec as the normal PS5. Just no disc drive.
Going to be interesting.

44

u/flyingalbatross1 Founder Sep 08 '20

It's marketing genuis. There will be plenty of people buying these things who will see the 'disc drive less' equivalents as being equivalent and the steep price drop will swing a lot of people in favour.

Hell I hate digital only editions and I have a 4K TV and i'm tempted at that price

23

u/I_CANT_AFFORD_SHIT Sep 08 '20

I'm probably getting PS5 day 1 but this series S is actually a tempting offer for Gamepass/Xbox exclusive use.

18

u/Sanityisoverrated1 Sep 08 '20

I imagine I, and a lot of other people, will be following that way of thinking.

8

u/I_CANT_AFFORD_SHIT Sep 08 '20

I mean, £250 is cheap. Cheaper than a switch and I'll be able to have a console from Xbox again, not had one since og so have some BC to catch up on at least!

If they do their monthly 0% payment plan with GP included I'm on it. Which is something I didn't see myself saying a few months ago..

u/ilikefish8D Sep 08 '20

Just said this in the Xbox sub.

But I’m pleasantly surprised by the pricing, it’s cheap. I also like the idea of having a monthly payment option and can definitely see that making gaming much more accessible.

Good job Microsoft, so far, so good.

28

u/HDDeer Sep 08 '20

Is it confirmed theres monthly payment options? Will that be available for the series x?

26

u/shinikahn Sep 08 '20

Xbox all access, with game pass ultimate. 25/mo for S and 35/mo for X. According to Windows central. The program itself is not new.

18

u/RedDesire Sep 08 '20

So technically not officially confirmed?

21

u/shinikahn Sep 08 '20

Nope, not official. It was revealed by Windows Central who also leaked everything else correctly, so it's safe to assume it's good Intel.

Sounds like pretty reasonable pricing!

2

u/shinikahn Sep 08 '20

I agree!

15

u/ilikefish8D Sep 08 '20

I’m sure I read somewhere that it was... but I’m unable to find out.

It’s entirely possible it was speculation or from a insider.

I’d never even heard of Xbox Access (or whatever it’s called) before I saw the monthly payment options...

3

u/DetBabyLegs Founder Sep 08 '20

$25/mo for Series S

$35/mo for Series X

Didn’t really read if anything else was included (like GamePass or Gold) but that’s a really reasonable price for many people

5

u/The7ruth Sep 08 '20

Xbox All Access includes the console and GPU.

12

u/DetBabyLegs Founder Sep 08 '20

Seeing GamePass Ultimate abbreviated as GPU... really throws me off

5

u/flyingalbatross1 Founder Sep 08 '20

not 100% confirmed but they've basically said they're rolling the payment plans out to many more markets.

The all access thing (and GP Ultimate) have been roaring successes and they're coining it in. Expect them pushed heavily.

Same, I was expecting the S to be $399 USD with the X at $499. At this price point I can see it selling a ton at Christmas.

3

u/SuperWoody64 Sgt. Johnson Sep 08 '20

And by ton you mean all of them they make by then. It's gonna backfire on scalpers though because the demand for it is because of the price alone.

12

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '20

Very clever indeed. And PS5 digital wouldn't be for 299$ definitely, I guess it will be 100$ more expensive.

6

u/jiveduder Sep 08 '20

Make me wonder, will people pay the extra hundred dollars for more power? Or is that extra $100 better spent on Game Pass?

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Squale71 Founder Sep 08 '20

I think the PS5 digital will come in at $449...so $150 more expensive. $399 would be a steal for simply removing one of the cheapest parts of the console (the disc drive). Although if it is $399 I'm jumping on it immediately. $449 might just be enough to convince me that $50 is worth the having the ability of using discs.

I'm committed to get the XSX but if Sony had a new console at £250 I'd be snatching one up, at that price it is hard to say no. It will be perfect as a secondary console for you because you can subscribe to Game Pass to play the First Party exclusives and cancel the sub when not playing so you can save money.

Sony has incredible first party studios that will keep making great games.

MS now has their own first party team that will also have plenty of amazing games as the gen goes on. They have game pass and Xcloud.

Both companies are in great places with great leadership that understand gaming. It’s so exciting being a fan of gaming right now!

It's beautiful. I don't have a 4K TV and I'm generally not interested in premium tech, so I'm really not sure what I want between the SX and SS. If there was a way to buy an optional disc drive add-on for the SS, I think that would be amazing. Don't know if that's feasible though. The lack of a disk drive isn't a deal breaker and things are understandably going to have to be cut to reach that amazing $300 price. I really want to support the idea of companion editions of consoles that are less premium versions, but I don't want to see discs go away and gaming become completely digital. Anyways, really blown away and excited by that $300 price. Love the silver-ish white color for the console

12

u/Imaybetoooldforthis Sep 08 '20

A USB disk drive would be very easy, I doubt they will do it though, the reason this thing is so cheap is because it’s all digital.

9

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '20

I think this was why Microsoft was so confident in their ability to undercut the PS5. Specs won’t mean much to the Average Jane or Joe.

Though it makes me wonder if the Series X could see a price change based off Sony’s pricing announcement soon? If the the PS5 will be $500, maybe Microsoft could re-price their Series X at $400 or $449?

3

u/explosiveegg Sep 08 '20

I can't see the Series X being under $500.

I think the Series X will match the PS5 price. Keep in mind, the Series X is quite a bit more powerful of a machine than the PS5, so it matching the price is still a great deal.

Xbox will have the cheapest option and most powerful (for the same price as their competitors console) option this holiday.

The fact that there is a lesser machine means that there was a big enough gap in price to warrant it. So $400 for the Series X is almost certainly not going to happen. $450 is unlikely, but possible, especially if they try to match the PS5 digital price.

With that said I am excited, I love the look of it. I can totally see it having a space on my media center to play Xbox games. Even the PS guys are saying they may pick this up. Sounds like a W for the Xbox team.

Sony definitely won’t be able to undercut the price on this one, they might just price there digital one at $300 if they’re feeling ballsy

17

u/Hunbbel Ori Sep 08 '20

Sony can't price DE at $299, and I don't think they have to.

The PS5 Digital Edition and Series S are very different consoles with a huge power gap. I don't think anybody would compare those two or expect them to have a similar price poinnt.

12

u/thisismytruename Craig Sep 08 '20

The average person would though. The series s will play every next gen game, just at a lower resolution probably. That'll take big portions of the market.

9

u/Hunbbel Ori Sep 08 '20

I think a lot will depend on marketing.

For example, I totally expect Sony to advertise the PS5 DE heavily as a 4K-8K console. If that tactic turns out to be successful, casual gamers will see that PS5 DE runs at 4K-8K and XSS does not.

Also, the PS5 SE and PS5 DE designs are so similar, it will be an advantage for Sony, trying to make that connection. XSS and XSX have very different design and almost looks like different consoles.

Either way, it will be very interesting. And for a marketer like me, how everything folds out, is super interesting.

I don't see Sony pricing at $300, if they do, it is pretty much game over for series S.

4

u/MagnummShlong Founder Sep 08 '20

If they do that Microsoft will give it away for 100$ lol.

5

Why does this seem like a "fuck it" announcement? it probably is.

5

u/MrGingerlicious Sep 08 '20

Because it is. Small leaks and hints can be brushed off until an organised event / announced can be scheduled... But this was a full on early release of promotional material for an unannounced / confirmed product. Best to just roll with it and laugh it off later.

4

u/Akash7713 Sep 08 '20

This price is just insane!!! This is a glorified game pass machine

3

u/arischerbub Sep 08 '20

you're right insane low... will buy 2 of them

5

u/GentlemansBumTease Sep 08 '20

I've always been a Sony guy, but looking back I've literally had every Xbox that has come out at some point. This, the specs, and GamePass just solidify me continuing that trend. Best deal in gaming, baby!!

5

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '20

Gotta be honest. This one is hard to pass up. I was already going to get a PS5 before a Series X. This could make me entirely bypass the Series X. If the PS5 is my go to 4k device, games that i play on the S will look just fine upscaled to 4k with ray tracing and I'm assuming HDR. I was going to go PS5 digital. Hmmmmm

About time, And of course que all the morons on Twitter who don’t understand that since it has the same CPU as the Series X, it ISNT holding back Series X games, same gameplay/frame rate, only lower graphics, and, I’m guessing, no Raytracing

9

u/RenjiMidoriya Founder Sep 08 '20

Ray tracing included apparently

Hyped for this. Does anyone know if there are still any great ways to get a large amount of gamepass ultimate for cheap? Will be a new account for me. Am in the UK if that makes any difference. Thanks

2

u/cozzie333 Sep 08 '20

I've managed to get xbox game pass ultimate at GAME uk store at black Friday and at easter time, 6 months for the price of 3 and if you activate to pay automatically after it expires then they give you another month for free. So I got 7 months for price of 3 for ultimate. Obviously before it's up just cancel the auto renewal. Just thought I'd share the way I've managed to get it cheaper since.

I own gaming PC, but will probably still buy it because it's so small and looks like perfect thing for traveling. Add small portable screen and you have somewhat of a switch alternative.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '20

This is the one for me, this is going to sell lots, and the design is nice and sleek.

Take the money Microsoft!

3

u/Virtual-Face Founder Sep 08 '20

Ok, now let me pre-order the console please.

3

u/banana_overload Sep 08 '20

That is a really good price, wonder when Sony is going to uncover its cards, gonna be hard to beat MS.

3

u/cardiacfish Sep 08 '20

I am currently on the ps4 but i will definitely buy the series s cause i have been planning to move systems for a long time and the cheap price is just what i needed. I hope the xboxes sell well.

3

People who are slamming this.

I imagine you either have no overheads/rich parents or have no idea what condition the global stock markets are currently in.

The specs aren’t even out yet but it’s supporting next gen titles with next gen features for £249 (UK) imagine some kids faces when they wake up at xmas and have a brand new Xbox under the tree. Priceless. These will sell like hot cakes.

In these times, big move Microsoft.

2

u/rhythmjones Founder Sep 08 '20

Meh, these things are almost always "leaked on purpose."

4

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '20

Im shocked at the price £250 in the UK. Gotta feeling it will turn heads if marketed correctly. This could be 150 to 250 cheaper than the PS5 digital with all the new next gen features just at a lower resolution. That's a very compelling offer for people looking for a cheap entry point into next generation.

2

Has there been any confirmation on the Series X price yet?

Kind of wondering if the leak/'confirmation' is an attempt at baiting Sony to name their price so MS can undercut.

u/ALennon25 Founder Sep 08 '20

Fantastic price. I think these will make ideal second consoles. The lack of a disc drive is annoying, especially in the UK where physical game prices are so much cheaper than digital, but I guess it's smart in a way as it's encouraging more Game Pass subscriptions.

If Sony match up this price for the disc-less PS5 then I'd be tempted to get one of those to complement the Series X. Again though the lack of a disc drive is a pain given that digital games are £60 and physical games £40 (even before any sales).

2

u/Fuze_is_not_OP Sep 08 '20

So if I own a physical copy of a game, does it mean I have to re buy it in digital form if I want to play it on this system?

2

u/Re-toast Founder Sep 08 '20

That's a great price for entry into next gen gaming and it will only go down from there in the future. In 2 years time someone may be able to make the jump at 250 or even 200.

Such a great idea for MS to make both the Series X and S at the outset of the generation. Now people can choose if they want the budget option or the peformance option to fit their needs.

Hi, can someone help me here. I don't understand the terms like terra flops or SSD speed and all that. I'm a student and I currently own a Samsung monitor 1080P monitor and Xbox one S. I want to upgrade my console and play next gen games. I don't have a huge disposable income. If I buy the Xbox X I won't be able to afford many games. But saving that extra 200 and buying Xbox s would give me room to purchase a few more games and the Elite controller as well.

Any suggestions ? I mainly Fifa, Apex Legends and Far Cry mostly.

3

u/Streelydan Sep 08 '20

Basically, if you have a 1080p display and don’t plan to upgrade to 4K, get this instead of the X

I have a 4k TV but the likelihood I will get to play on said tv, due to having two kids under 4 and the unfortunate acoustics of my living room means I either game on an old Xbox One in the master bed (which has an old 1080p 42" tv) or in my computer den.

The xbox series S is a dang good value proposition in that, before, I had a choice of either a replacing my 1060 GPU or the X box series X (which I wouldn't get to use to it's full potential) whereas now it's looking like I could get the series S for bedroom gaming and get a new GPU.
