Tubing in Cherokee during Powwow?

Was planning to head out to Cherokee to tube the river there on Friday, July 5th, but then realized that's right during the start of Powwow. Is Powwow a bit more in-town and further from the river, or is the area going to be a complete madhouse the whole weekend?

Internet options in very rural Black Mountain spot?

Hey all,
I lost my home in asheville a few weeks ago and been scrambling. Fortunately, I've found a potential perfect home in Black Mts but their internet is terrible (hughesnet). All of us work from home on zoom calls so it's a dealbreaker for us.

Anyone local have suggestions?

Loc is off of Highway 9S ~9 miles south of Black mountain.

I tried Starlink and Skyrunner and they both said the dense forest and location doesn't provide good line of sight to Stone Mountain and likely a no go. They said maybe you could hire to install the receiver on a tall tree but they also highly doubted it.

What'd ya think about Old Fort?

Asheville is getting to expensive for me to live at so I'm thinking of looking at a place all the way out in Old Fort. I live and work in Swannanoa right now. What are the pros and cons? What's it like living in Mcdowell County?

In search of calm clean waters for kayaking

I visit WNC 3x a year and stay in sylva, and I’m looking for a nice place to kayak where the water is calm. We did the tuckasegee in Dillsboro last summer, and as someone inexperienced it was a little too stressful for me (rapids/bottoming out). I hear the French broad is pretty dirty, so hoping someone may know of a nice spot to kayak where it would be a relaxing peaceful and beautiful way to spend a day. Thanks!

Any gamer parents in the Morganton area want to start a game with kids? My 12 year old wants to play, but we're having a hard time finding a group here (I know about Timmy Macs and the library). Thinking there must be some parents out there that will be glad to play with a mixed age group.

I'd like to host, but it needs to be Monday or Tuesday evening as I don't have him full time. I think ages 12-15 with a parent or two, but I'm open to ideas. I can DM, but don't have any prior experience doing it yet.

Message me if interested.

New Resident; Help!

Hi! New to the WNC area from SC! I’m trying to get my drivers license changed and register my vehicle but I’m having a hard time finding out what and how to go about this. TBH, things like this are a bit difficult for me to do, and my brain sort of shuts off when things become too difficult and not clear cut (yes I know this is part of being an adult…I really thrive in other areas! Just not this area) Any help is greatly appreciated!

Question about Pisgah High School in Clyde

My niece is moving to Clyde from Florida and will be starting her Junior year this semester. She is gay. She left her previous school due to bullying and has done virtual school for the past two years. She is anxious about starting at a new school in a new state in a small town and experiencing the same thing as at her previous school. Can anyone give some insight, advice or personal experience regarding the atmosphere there? Thank you!

Fear and Fun in the Mountains of WNC - The AVL Scarefest RPG Convention is Happening! (posted with mod permission)

Fear and Fun in the Mountains of WNC - The AVL Scarefest RPG Convention is Happening!

Good day, good people. The most terror-inducing, fear-tingling, gut-wrenching, tea-drinking, hilarity-creating tabletop RPG convention in Western North Carolina is happening this October.

AVL Scarefest will be running from Friday, October 18 to Sunday, October 20 2024 and we’d love it if you could join us.

AVL Scarefest has been offering some of the best gaming experiences and the single most friendly and inclusive gaming community in our region since 2013 (with a couple of Plague years gone missing in there somewhere). We welcome you to join us for tabletop gaming running the gamut of hilarious to creepy to downright unnerving. Along the way maybe you'll run into our Yeti, get haunted by a ghost, or find a treasure you never even knew you were looking for.

Our aim is to make AVL Scarefest as friendly and exciting as possible for everyone. Here’s what you can expect:

  • A huge variety of role-playing and board games, from old favorites like D&D and Pathfinder to lovingly crafted indie games, a Vampire LARP, and everything in between.
  • Some of the best darn players you’ll ever come across (after all, you’ll be there, right?), all with an easy-going attitude, friendly tables, and a true spirit of inclusivity. This is our eighth con, and it’s going to be better than ever!
  • A professionally-organized con, with always-available staff to ensure everyone is well-supported and has a great time.
  • An astonishingly beautiful setting — we’re up in Black Mountain, at the Montreat Convention Center, in the fall. Is it going to be beautiful? You bet!
  • Yetis, minions, baby dire goats, a lovingly-crafted theme, and all the hauntings we can muster…

Tickets are going fast, and we’re capping attendance at 250 of the most glorious RPGers - what does that mean? It means you need to head here, right now, to grab your ticket.

https://avlscarefest.com/shop/

We’re also seeking out GMs, so if you have a game you want to run, you can signup for that here:

https://avlscarefest.com/gm-signup/

We’d love to see you there!

Still have questions? We’ve got you covered - email us at: [info@avlscarefest.com](mailto:info@avlscarefest.com)

Quick final note: It’s our last year in Montreat, and we’ll be moving on to a new WNC venue in 2025. So, come along and enjoy the gorgeous colors and the gorgeous people in 2024.
