It's so weird hearing Rex's VA (as in the person who voices the original Rex) speak so calmly.

673

u/Pizzazz86 Apr 05 '24

Fr all his characters usually speak in the same way.

418

u/xstormaggedonx War Woman Apr 05 '24

Oh yeah. Rex, Jay, Pimento... I feel they usually typecast him lmao he's just so good at that particular kind of character

196

u/Rog9377 Apr 05 '24

Leaving out the two biggest psychos he's played, Rafi and Derek lmao

30

u/xstormaggedonx War Woman Apr 05 '24

What are they from? I haven't seen everything he's in

72

u/dancingbriefcase Duct Tape Man Apr 05 '24

Jason Mantzoukas is hilarious. He's been in a ton of things, but has a podcast How Did This Get Made? with June Diane Raphael and Paul Scheer.

I like when he comes on the Avatar Last Airbender podcast, because he doesn't even joke there. He's pretty insightful.

But if you look him up, he's been in a ton of shows and movies usually is a side character, but he's been getting more prominent roles

20

u/barukatang Apr 05 '24

He's also great when he plays scientists roles, specifically in The dictator with the pointy rocket, and all his Drunk history appearances.

44

u/link3945 Apr 05 '24

Rafi is the League, Derek is the Good Place.

The League was fun when it aired, not sure how well it holds up. The Good Place is in the running for one of the best comedy shows of all time.

12

u/MiraHan597 Apr 05 '24

Comedy??????? Bitch that shit made me cry my heart out at the end, don't do that to other people

/s

(But seriously, it is hilarious and so good, watch it and stick it to the end, it WILL make sense)

2

u/ForestGreenAura Apr 06 '24

I watched the league for the first time last year and loved it and it honestly makes invincible slightly less serious when all I can hear is Rafi lmao. If you like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia or like “raunchy” comedies ig, I would definitely recommend. I don’t even watch football and it was still super enjoyable.

First time I ever saw him in anything was The League. He was so hilarious in that!

7

u/MilkyAvenger Apr 05 '24

RAFI BOMBBB!!!

7

u/Cobrachimkin Apr 05 '24

Rafi is one of the best things to have ever been on tv.

3

u/Manisil Apr 05 '24

His biggest role has been Jeffrey Characterwheaties

u/timdr18 Apr 05 '24

It was so weird seeing him as a relatively reasonable character in the Percy Jackson series.

3

u/Murphster4DK Apr 05 '24

Don't forget Derrick

2

u/Foxy02016YT Apr 06 '24

Watching Brooklyn99 right now and fuck I love Pimento he’s the worst and I wouldn’t have it any other way

2

u/barukatang Apr 05 '24

His guest spot on Harmonquest was hilarious

2

u/-Badger3- Apr 06 '24

Do a shot every time Jason Mantzoukas shows up in a show playing the exact same fucking character.

88

u/TheOrigamiKid Apr 05 '24

Jason Mantzoukas! Love his voice acting. And if you're in the mood for more, he plays a weird bad guy in Paper Girls.

11

u/AndChewBubblegum Apr 05 '24

I like how he plays up his insanity whenever he plays a character, but if you listen to his podcast, yes he's clearly still putting on a bit of insanity, but he's clearly very intelligent, well-read, etc.

6

u/barukatang Apr 05 '24

"WHATS UP JERKS!!!!"

4

u/mindpainters Apr 05 '24

I was really hoping Apple or someone would pick it up for a second season. RIP

1

u/unembellishing Apr 06 '24

I love him as Derek in the Good Place

5

u/ScramItVancity Apr 06 '24

Because Ross Marquand was basically doing a dialed down Jason Mantzoukas impression as Rudy.

u/abbacadar Apr 05 '24

Went back and reread the comics and this is in there as well, Robert Kirkman is a genius.

523

u/Faid9142 Apr 05 '24

What happens, I just wanna know the gist of how rex ends up being robot

662

u/espenc Apr 05 '24

You can’t really explain it without giving away a massive spoiler

344

u/sonrhys Apr 05 '24

Yeah even just the gist of it is a huge part of the back half of the story

169

u/Justsomeguy456 Apr 05 '24

Even though this post is marked as a spoiler, people are saying no spoilers? Fuck that. If we can't spoil something in a post marked as spoiler what the hell is the point💀💀 someone spoil this shit already lmao.

91

u/ksubijeans Apr 05 '24

Tbf to him, it’s hard when you want to discuss the show and a ton of people have already finished the comics, there are spoilers everywhere, they’re like landmines haha

u/__Very_Smart_AF__ Apr 05 '24

so should I just watch the show or read the comics to get it?

14

u/espenc Apr 05 '24

You’ll probably get it come season 3

2

u/gly_96 Apr 06 '24

Pm it to me please I gots to know

81

u/Nemeris117 Apr 05 '24

swap the location of your names

42

u/Carbuyrator Adam Wilkens Apr 05 '24

Nicely done. That's ominous and mysterious and doesn't exactly give it away.

10

u/MissMamaMam Apr 06 '24

I’m not clever enough to get it 😭

23

u/KarmaRBLXVN Anissa Apr 06 '24

"What happens, I just wanna know the gist of how Robot ends up being Rex"

7

u/Nemeris117 Apr 06 '24

Youll get to see it someday hopefully. Not the worst problem to have!

115

u/slimstarman Apr 05 '24

It’s a huge spoiler and trust me: you want to do the reading to get to that point. It’s some of the best material in the whole series.

19

u/JxB_Paperboy Apr 05 '24

What issue should I pick up after season 2 and where can I read em?

43

u/sfinney2 Robot Apr 05 '24

Recommend starting from beginning... Season 2 skipped around a bit so some parts are up to issue 47 or so but the last episode adapted around issue 33.

Compendiums are cheapest way to buy them, but some libraries apparently have them through Hoopla and comixoly had the first 10 volumes last I heard (which only gets you to around issue 53).

2

u/Ybhryhyn Apr 06 '24

comixology definitely has all of it

13

u/namethatsnotused Apr 05 '24

Issue 1, or don't read the comics at all.

u/JustMy2Centences Apr 06 '24

As a show watcher I'm just going to make some guesses. Never read the comics. Speculation is fun!

Rex gets paralyzed and Robot gives him a suit to work with. Regrettably unoriginal, but effective.

Robot makes a clone of Rex and transfers his consciousness into it.

Robot transfers his consciousness into the actual Rex in an attempt to repair brain damage side effects but accidentally overwrites Rex. Whoopsie.

Robot is dead. Rex just really liked his suit and inherited/acquired it.

3

u/cant_give_an_f Apr 06 '24

It’s best to not as technically it spoils much of the future seasons of the show as it’s important

1

u/mpc1226 Apr 07 '24

Other way around

1

u/Un111KnoWn Apr 05 '24

is thos show spoiler or comic spoiler? i dont want to get spoiled cuz i havent read the comics

1

u/OkCrazyBruh Apr 06 '24

Bto i want to read the comics for free any sources?

397

u/First_Factor_3385 Apr 05 '24

Yeaaaaa

I was watching the reel rejects reaction to the finale and when they got to that part and said Rex is robot I was just like 😬😬

114

u/Own_Emphasis_3195 Apr 05 '24

I noticed that too I was like "they caught it! But they didnt catch it!" Its fascinating seeing non readers talk about it

28

u/FuckTheOfficialApp Apr 06 '24

I've seen some non-show readers try to argue it with each other that it has to be Rex since Eve calls him that and I'm just sitting back like LMAO

5

u/Own_Emphasis_3195 Apr 06 '24

You have some guys go "remember bro Rudy took Rex's body" and then someone else is like "she called him Rex tho??" And we're sitting here like "Well done, show. Well done" 😂

636

u/MissiaichParriah Apr 05 '24

Damn, I actually thought they'd keep him alive considering Rae survived

674

u/Lil_ruggie Apr 05 '24

Nah Rex's death is more of a story point than Raes death. My boy will die to complete his redemption arc.

153

u/PS3LOVE Comic Fan Apr 05 '24

Yeah, and I’m sure Rae will die for real later on at some Point.

rex and his funeral and the way he died is actually important to the story and to his character growth, if they change that they would need to change his character growth, and robot a bit. Rae is a side character who dying or not dying doesn’t affect much in the comics

26

u/KingOfTheUzbeks Apr 05 '24

Given they made Shapesmith much less sympathetic I think she may take his fate

1

u/Formal_Drop526 Apr 06 '24

It's canon event.

178

u/AdStunning2459 Subway Train Apr 05 '24

Shrinking Ray was more of ”the other guy” while Rex was an actually important character

2

u/MikeWithoutMic Rex Splode Apr 06 '24

No lie I was calling him Rob after his death for a while cause I forgot who he was.

217

u/Gardakkan Apr 05 '24

How many times he said something about not changing the future though...

132

u/MonkiWasTooked Red Rush Apr 05 '24

yeah that was weird, he talked about not disrupting the time stream when they’re literally causing a gigantic disruption

39

u/atomsk29 Apr 05 '24

It'd just split into another dimension/reality.

24

u/MonkiWasTooked Red Rush Apr 05 '24

well that’s what i assumed but why does mark knowing about the other dimension disrupt the time stream

11

u/Few-Acanthisitta1622 Apr 05 '24

Right, their entire goal was to change to time stream so that mark goes back to the correct dimension. Wtf was robot talking about

The original Rex eventually ends up sacrificing himself. To honor him, Robot/Rudy takes on his name.

329

u/TelevisionExpress616 Apr 05 '24

I honestly wished he kept his name as Rudy. I get that he’s a sociopath who doesn’t understand why it’s weird, but just from a reader’s perspective it was always confusing to me. Especially when discussing with someone who hasn't gotten to that part of the story

198

u/Pilarcraft Apr 05 '24

The oddest part is that instead of someone telling him "yeah this is really fucked up actually. Even looking at the clone body you made out of taking his blood non-consensually is weird enough, just go back to calling yourself Rudy" (which is something all of them are thinking) they just call him Rex.

83

u/UnknownEntity347 Apr 05 '24

I hope in this version Mark stops calling him that once he goes all psycho

10

u/idksomethingno Apr 05 '24

Keep cooking

14

u/Carbuyrator Adam Wilkens Apr 05 '24

But he said he was sad, guys!

Fr it was super weird the way Amanda just kinda let it go.

10

u/dudemanlikedude Apr 06 '24

Rudy did it because he noticed Monster Girl found Rex attractive, too. Everyone let that go way too easily.

It makes sense that HE doesn’t get why it’s unacceptable, but why does eve call him that? I don’t buy that she would willingly do that. I think everyone actually would tell him no and refuse

u/Pwesidential_Debate John Wilkes Booth Apr 05 '24

But doesn’t that event not happen if Invincible doesn’t come back?

112

u/gonegoat Apr 05 '24

I have to imagine someone punches his ticket in some other way.

52

u/JSkywalker22 Apr 05 '24

They state things go bad without invincible around, and their world is in chaos. Makes sense that includes lots of other heroes, OG Rex included, dying.

7

u/running_later Two-Punch Man Apr 05 '24

so, I assume there's some comic book time paid to flesh out this version of the guardians?

I have only read the first bound paperback volume of the comic.
but I AM asking for spoilers.

19

u/Arrow2317 Apr 05 '24

No, they appear just as they did in the show. I haven't read all of the comics but I have gotten to that point and the scene is a 1:1 of the comic.

Mark has been beaten half to death in literally most of the episodes of the show. I'm sure they can find SOME excuse to delay him enough to let Rex have his big moment

Rex sacrifices himself to save the world. Rudy takes his name after having taken his literal physical form because well you know in his honour. Which, uh, given the shit he later does, well done honouring him buddy.

2

u/wubrgess Apr 06 '24

Does he fix the cable?

124

u/Comfortable_Oil99 Omnipotus Apr 05 '24

I’m more interested in how they will do the voice are they really gonna use Rex va?

178

u/RandomHerosan Apr 05 '24

I mean, you sound different as a kid vs. an adult. Considering Robot/Rudy is a clone of Rex, it would make sense he would have the same voice after puberty.

49

u/Majam303 Apr 05 '24

Except Rudy as a kid still sounds like an adult. You gonna tell me when he speaks you hear a child? Going from a child's voice to adults in Puberty makes sense. Going from an adult voice to a different adult voice does not. But oh well it's just a creative decision, not a big deal.

47

u/RandomHerosan Apr 05 '24

Personally I'll take Jason Mantzoukas over the current VA any day. It'll be a fun transition to see him go from cocky foul-mouthed Rex to the logical and intellectual Robot.

18

u/Majam303 Apr 05 '24

I definitely like Jason Mantzoukas voice better so that'd be cool

11

u/erossmith Apr 05 '24

Ross Marquand is a great voice actor. Jason is more iconic. But Ross is doing his job well with Rudy, who is more intellectual and cold.

8

u/GodlessHippie Apr 05 '24

He also did an amazing job of blending the robot voice and the Rex voice into its own unique thing that still has elements of both characters

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Sevensevenpotato Apr 07 '24

I thought it was weird that they used a different actor for Rudy. Just have Jason pitch up his voice a little. Tbh it’s not even pitched up by the other actor. We’re already spending too much on voice acting

2

u/Nacroleptic_Owl Gillian Jacobs Apr 06 '24

Maybe Jason when he's outside the suit and the same va when he's in suit

1

u/Comfortable_Oil99 Omnipotus Apr 06 '24

That’s a really good idea

61

u/SUPER_QUOOL Apr 05 '24

I havent read the comics. When i saw robot taking his helmet off, i deadass thought it was Rudy. I assumed it would have made sense since Rudy cloned Rex's body for his own. But then Eve referred to him as Rex. So now im guessing Rudy and Rex came upon an agreement to kind of be like Tony Stark and JARVIS idk

53

u/Doobie_Howitzer Battle Beast Apr 05 '24

Keep running it through your mind, it'll be a bit of a doozy when the reveal comes out

→ More replies (4)

95

u/Gr8BigFatso Apr 05 '24

I hope they don't minimize Zachary Quinto voicing Robot in the later parts, His voice fits so well and he's who I heard in my head when reading the comics.

93

u/Longjumping-Wind1811 Apr 05 '24

I think they'll probably use Zachary while on armor and Jason out of armor

42

u/PraxisV Apr 05 '24

They’ll definitely need Zachary around to deliver those tonal lines for when Robot does things like murder Cecil, betray Mark, and eliminate the other heroes when he dons his black armor.

29

u/GCEF950 Apr 05 '24

For real, I've been reading through the comic myself and when I caught this scene, it clicked immediately. So cool!

33

u/Ttvcat996 Apr 05 '24

I haven’t read the comics but I know. I know

14

u/doctorchops1217 Apr 05 '24

the cameo of angstrom’s son and fox was a nice touch

13

u/Own_Emphasis_3195 Apr 05 '24

This is a really great nod. Obvious enough so that the comic readers can get excited about it, but subtle enough to not completely give it away and let the non comic readers speculate

18

u/dunkanan Apr 05 '24

The hair length would be the tell, but show Rex has long hair as well for some reason

10

u/Wizecracker117 Spider-Man Apr 05 '24

Had long hair. It was shaved after he got shot.

1

u/MikeWithoutMic Rex Splode Apr 06 '24

Rex always had the trimmed sides and manbun, didn’t he?

10

u/PinkGoldJigglypuff Apr 05 '24

Okay I haven't actually watched the episode yet (so I'm just going by this screenshot) but isn't "Rex" supposed to be younger here? Why does he look the same age as Eve. I thought he would look more similar to current day Rex.

14

u/Cmusil05 Apr 05 '24

That’s a large plot point later on, they’ll explain it

7

u/sleeplesskn1ght Apr 05 '24

I hope his moment in the show will be like when majin Vegeta detonates himself against Buu in DBZ.

14

u/PraxisV Apr 05 '24

Seeing to how well liked Rex has become to show-only viewers (and how much the show version has made me like him even more as a comic-viewer), it’ll be pretty big and he’ll go out with his own Final Flash.

1

u/wubrgess Apr 06 '24

It was me, Barry

5

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '24

Oh God 😂😂😂 I knew it meant something, fuck 😂

5

u/karma_virus Apr 05 '24

I wonder if Rex in the suit lets him focus his blasts like mega man. Maybe he can rip the arms off mini bosses and beat the other minibosses with them.

4

u/Mr_Quackers510 Monster Girl and Robot Apr 05 '24

Robot's character development is the arcs I'm most excited for them to adapt in the show. He's such an interesting character.

4

u/TownIdiot25 Apr 06 '24

I forget if this foreshadowing was in this part of the comics. Also, after "Rex" grows up will they have Jason Mantzoukas voice him as an adult like this and Zachary Quinto voice the robot suit? Or was Jason voicing the robot suit in this scene?

1

u/gunnarbird Apr 06 '24

Quinto voiced the suit according to Amazon

8

u/asscop99 Apr 05 '24

I’m actually not liking Rex’s voice casting anymore. It’s good and all and it works well for OG Rex but I can’t imagine taking Robot seriously with that voice. Perhaps if the actor pitches down a little bit

2

u/MikeWithoutMic Rex Splode Apr 06 '24

I agree. I’ve actually can’t imagine scenarios where Jason Mantzoukas is being super serious and sad or meticulous and calculated. He’s just got such an expressive voice

Last night we were having a watch party where two out of the 8 of the group had read the comics and know what will happen and when this scene was going down one of us said “wait she called him Rex” and I said “duh cuz that’s his body” and we shrugged and kept watching then he paused it and he said no wait yall she called RUDY , REX and we all looked at him looked at the two who had read and they just said “yeah took yall a second”. We all erupted into discussion and it was quiet funny

Ok It’s been a couple of years since I’ve read these comics and I actually was a bit confused by this. I dont care for spoilers of comics pls send awnser in dm or comments :)

1

u/jakemonaghan30 Apr 05 '24

So is that an older Rudolph who started calling himself Rex or was that an older Rex

1

u/Edenian_Prince Darkwing II Apr 06 '24

I hope we get to see the beard, it complimented his character quite a lot.

1

u/AleksasKoval Banished to Hell Apr 06 '24

Wouldn't "People who don't know" just be confused? If i hadn't read the comics, I'd assume, mainly from the voice, that Rex got smart somehow and took over Robot's role.

1

u/Stellarisk Apr 06 '24

I’m glad that Rex’s va is voicing rex

1

u/JPGer Martian Man Apr 06 '24

whats even funnier is the comic has a hint that the show did not.
