RIF dev here - Reddit's API changes will likely kill RIF and other apps, on July 1, 2023

I need more time to get all my thoughts together, but posting this quick post since so many users have been asking, and it's been making rounds on news sites.

Summary of what Reddit Inc has announced so far, specifically the parts that will kill many third-party apps:

  1. The Reddit API will cost money, and the pricing announced today will cost apps like Apollo $20 million per year to run. RIF may differ but it would be in the same ballpark. And no, RIF does not earn anywhere remotely near this number.

  2. As part of this they are blocking ads in third-party apps, which make up the majority of RIF's revenue. So they want to force a paid subscription model onto RIF's users. Meanwhile Reddit's official app still continues to make the vast majority of its money from ads.

  3. Removal of sexually explicit material from third-party apps while keeping said content in the official app. Some people have speculated that NSFW is going to leave Reddit entirely, but then why would Reddit Inc have recently expanded NSFW upload support on their desktop site?

Their recent moves smell a lot like they want third-party apps gone, RIF included.

I know some users will chime in saying they are willing to pay a monthly subscription to keep RIF going, but trust me that you would be in the minority. There is very little value in paying a high subscription for less content (in this case, NSFW). Honestly if I were a user of RIF and not the dev, I'd have a hard time justifying paying the high prices being forced by Reddit Inc, despite how much RIF obviously means to me.

There is a lot more I want to say, and I kind of scrambled to write this since I didn't expect news reports today. I'll probably write more follow-up posts that are better thought out. But this is the gist of what's been going on with Reddit third-party apps in 2023.

I have been using RIF for nearly a decade. It has been THE ONLY way I use Reddit, aside from the occasional old.reddit on desktop.

Thank you for the last decade of support on this. I, along with many long-time users, will probably quit Reddit due to this change.

u/wazzu24 May 31 '23

The same for me. I only use old.reddit and RIF. I've known it was a ticking time bomb that one or both of those would be taken away and here we are. I simply find the main reddit site and app to both be significantly worse experiences than old.reddit and RIF. Don't see myself on reddit much at all as they force users into whatever box they want.

u/Tomoya-kun May 31 '23

RiF is legitimately one of the main reasons I've stuck with android. That's how much influence a single app has over the choices I make and if reddit thinks that another site won't immediately step into their place and that Reddit will live past that, we'll... They're only Digging their own grave.

87

u/firewindrefuge Jun 01 '23

I'm honestly surprised by the amount of people that RIF has had an impact on, myself included. I've already commented this several other times on this thread, but I guess I'll say it again with different wording lol.

RIF has been so impactful in my daily life for over a decade, and it's somewhat comforting to know there's so many others that feel this way, and are most likely going to quit reddit because of this as well

51

u/Vladimir1174 Jun 01 '23

I already can't stand reddit in any form that isn't rif. Ive used it for so long that without this app I doubt I'd ever even think to browse reddit

44

u/Tomoya-kun Jun 01 '23

RiF is reddit for me, and this account is almost 13 years old. I'll just move to whatever replaces it.

Yep yep yep. I honestly barely know how to navigate reddit without this app, and I'm sure as fuck not going to bother with their garbage official app.

But maybe that's a good thing...I probably spend too much time on reddit anyway lol

Pretty sure the last time I mindlessly browsed without RIF was stumbleupon in like 2011. Not looking forward to finding a replacement 😕

3

u/Peentjes Jun 01 '23

But without RIF, how will we know what replaces it? We are doomed!

Spot on! My son introduced me to reddit via RIF something like 10 yrs ago or so, it's all I have used. When it goes I won't use reddit any longer.

28

u/suprmario Jun 01 '23

We're all gonna actually have healthy social lives and hobbies again... but I'm gonna miss this app a lot.

17

u/Toast_On_The_RUN Jun 01 '23

A whole decade, nearly half my life. It seems like just an app or website but it's been pretty much the only way I've learned about the world in general over the last 10 years. Where else can I get the such varied types of information in such a clean interface.

18

u/Dunlikai Jun 01 '23

I'm actually having a physical response to this akin to a breakup. How incredibly sad and infuriating by the Reddit team.

RIF has been such a big part of my life. I don't think I've ever even logged into actual Reddit once since creating my account.

I know others have been with RIF for longer, but this shit is still foundational for me.

I don't know where I'll go. It certainly won't be normal Reddit. Fuck them.

2

u/animeniak Jun 01 '23

I dont even remember my password and I don't use the email my acct is linked to, and I'm entirely on mobile. So once RIF is gone, I'll be done

Dude, right? I started using it when I was 13, I'm almost 23 now. Reddit (RiF) has been with me through so many stages of my life. I don't even remember what I used to browse as a 13 year old. I remember being a senior in HS and loving r/dankmemes and r/meirl. I remember the weird self references of those subs (remember BOAR VESSEL?). I visited r/socialskills when I was getting into uni to help me navigate a whole new social sphere. I visited r/seduction when I was sad and at a low point, and then eventually I realized what a shit sub it is. Even though it was a toxic sub, it got me going to the gym and taught me to filter these toxic messages so it was a net positive in my life. r/loseit to help with that fitness goal. My browsing habits have changed over time of course, but reddit was a constant in my life for the entirety of my teenage years. But I think it's finally time to let go, and move on to a new chapter. I cannot use the abomination of the official app, it will feel like someone killed my beloved app and put a fake mask on. Goodbye RiF

But who am I gonna talk about my hobbies with? That's like the main reason I use reddit.

This is such a blow. I feel horrible for the dev, and for this community here that this app means so much to.

We're sadly in the minority at the end of the day. Until recently I didn't know profile pictures were a thing, saw someone say "I like your profile picture" to someone else and was like what? I didn't know because RIF and old.reddit don't support them.

Go onto the normal reddit site some time, go to a popular post on /all, and scroll through the comments. Note how many have profile pictures. Overall it's safe to say anyone with a profile picture uses the new reddit interface or official app. It's most.

And of the ones that don't, that have used a third party app until now? As much as this thread is full of people saying they're quitting, more than half will end up staying because they're too damn addicted.

This isn't to say no one will leave, I will be among those that do. But I don't think for a second it will be enough to hurt reddit.

3

u/esaleme Jun 01 '23

r/TIL about Reddit profile pictures, and I am many cakedays into Reddit

Whenever I have to use the current Reddit it is horrible. RIF has kept me on Reddit for hours, everything else a few minutes before I start to hate it and leave.

u/rotorain Jun 01 '23

I was trying to find out if the app store showed me when I first downloaded it, idk when that was but I left a review that was basically a textual blobjibber in 2014. Rip to the king of reddit apps

2

u/The_Frame Jun 01 '23

Yeah this is honestly devastating, far more devastating than I was prepared for. RIF and old.reddit are the only ways I've also accessed Reddit. I've never known another way, and do not like any other way I've tried thus far. I'll have to find some way because I think I'm too bound to Reddit to leave entirely.

2

u/metamet Jun 01 '23

You are my people. Exactly how I use Reddit.

End of an era. Deeply saddened by this.

Wonder what I'll do with all my free time now, though..

u/meno123 May 31 '23

I legitimately feel bad that the ad free unlock was such a low one-time fee at this point. RiF has given me so much more value than I put into it, and I would absolutely pay a small subscription fee for it- if it went to the developer. I will not pay a subscription fee for RiF that just gets yoinked by reddit.

u/Ghawblin May 31 '23

I bought premium YEARS ago with google survey money lol. Dev defo deserves more.

16

u/HowTheyGetcha Jun 01 '23

Same here and I've spent over $100 on apps using survey money, and I still have more than I can spend. It's a pretty good deal :p

u/AnticitizenPrime Jun 01 '23 edited Jun 01 '23

It's not dead, it's just dormant. It really hasn't had to change much lately. It became mature.

If Reddit makes huge changes, of course, it will break RES and they'll either revive or die. I bet people will come out of the woodwork to revive it.

1

u/Nowhere_Man_Forever Jun 01 '23

Yep. If I have to use the official app on mobile I'm done.

3

u/quantummidget Jun 01 '23

People often say this when big change occurs, but in this case it may actually be true, at least for me. I'll probably still occasionally browse reddit on PC, but that makes up a small percentage of my reddit time.

It's not as if the change to my mobile app is just some new release that we'll all get used to. I imagine that all of us have tried the official app, found it lacking, and moved to the better alternatives. Unless there are some major changes to the official app, I can see this change causing a notable downtick in users.

4

u/peppermint_nightmare Jun 01 '23

That's exactly why I started using RiF, the official mobile app back in 2010 or whatever sucked egg. And it still does.

4

u/zaminDDH Jun 01 '23

People often say this when big change occurs, but in this case it may actually be true, at least for me. I'll probably still occasionally browse reddit on PC, but that makes up a small percentage of my reddit time.

I could see intentionally getting on for a specific discussion, it is very good at cultivating very niche communities, but my days of just casually scrolling could very well be over. All the other app experiences I've tried have been awful.

3

22

u/wwWalterWhiteJr May 31 '23

Same situation here. To be honest, I've been struggling to stop mindlessly browsing on mobile and am in a weird way glad that they're finally forcing me off their platform. I'll still use old.reddit at work on my desktop but zero chance I'm using their shitty app on mobile.

4

u/banneryear1868 Jun 01 '23

The reddit app doesn't give me the fun casual browing feel rif does, I already have it and don't use it. So mobile browsing might just be dead for me, we'll see how much this impacts reddit content as a whole. It's been becoming digg slowly.

2

u/CapeOfBees Jun 01 '23

And the official Reddit app is like 5x the storage space. Even if it were designed well I'd be using an alternate app because of how stupidly big it is.

u/Rinibeanie Jun 01 '23

Same, it's actually a little sad how much RIF has taken over my evenings, idly scrolling, when just years ago I'd be glued to my Kindle (an e-ink reader, too clunky to browse online). RIF potentially going down is heartbreaking, I will truly miss it, but otoh, it'll be nice to focus on single narratives at a time instead of hopping from community to community for hours.

18

u/Necronomicommunist May 31 '23

Same. Reddit's going the way of Digg.

6

u/littenthehuraira Jun 01 '23

Reddit is too big to die though. It'll stay relevant, but its quality will just drop as all social media sites converge.

5

u/azimir Jun 01 '23

Digg was too big to die too. It didn't wholly die, but it's long since failed as the leading social media/posting site.

There were sites like reddit before reddit and there will be ones after it. It's only a matter of time.

3

u/Hiccup Jun 01 '23 edited Jun 01 '23

Nothing is too big to die. I have seen multiple migrations. Life/ internet will adapt.

I remember when nobody thought digg would basically turn into a ghost town overnight. Where the power users go is where everyone will follow.

1

u/littenthehuraira Jun 01 '23

Digg is ancient now. The internet has massively grown since that time. Reddit has so many users and significance that I can't see it going anywhere, whereas Digg died out in a time where the internet was a lot smaller and more volatile.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '23

You could've said the same thing about Digg at the time it died, while pointing out how MySpace was different.

It still died. As did MySpace, MSN Messenger, Facebook, etc

2

u/coolfangs Jun 01 '23

The pyramid comes tumbling down when you alienate the original community holding up the foundations, the people that really made the site what it is in the first place. Without it, it's just another generic social media that will fade into obscurity.

6

u/uhhhhhhhhh_okay May 31 '23

Same here. This app is the best

2

u/deten May 31 '23

Been using RIF since its release. Can't believe this is the way Reddit repays the devs who made their website more accessible to more people

2

u/BalphezarWrites May 31 '23

Yep, bye Reddit

1

u/thecrimeofperfection Jun 01 '23

Exact same case here, my wife has pretty much stopped using reddit altogether. Reddits own app is so grossly inferior to this one.

1

u/Kinteoka Jun 01 '23

Send apropos that reddit replaced Digg and now reddit is starting to die from similar issues and even more than what killed Digg.

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '23

No you won't

1

u/there_all_is_aching May 31 '23

Yup, same. If RIF is gone, I'm done with Reddit. It's so nice that corporations ruin everything they touch.

1

u/big_duo3674 May 31 '23

I'm in the same boat as you, I've used it for almost as long. I've tried to switch occasionally when people really talk up a different app but it still never works and I always end up back here. It's the best way to view the site, barebones on the surface and yet tons of functionality under the hood

1

u/FuggyGlasses May 31 '23

Yep. Worse for my therapist, but good for me.

1

u/KiwiThunda May 31 '23

I'm the same, and this is the last "social media" I use. Not sure what I'll do because I'm hardly at my computer just browsing, only working or gaming.

Might have to take up a real hobby

1

u/blazzerftw May 31 '23

I almost certainly will quit reddit due to this change. I don't tuch the desktop site and the official app fells bogged down. I will continue to use RIF until July. thank you for posting this mods so I could say my peace.

1

u/m3thodm4n021 May 31 '23

Same here. Landed here from Fark.com sometime before the Digg migration and never left. I'm a carpenter so I'm only in front of my desktop at night, and I won't be using my precious gaming time to look at Reddit like I'm back in school again. Reddit devs have been slowly chipping away at what makes this place great for a while though.

1

u/janeohmy May 31 '23

Same. I've tried Apollo, Boost, etc. But RIF is always what I come back to. It the singlest best experience in my entire Reddit browsing life. It has made the Reddit journey so incredibly bearable. If RIF goes away, then even with unlocked Reddit Official App, I still wouldn't browse it as often anymore. Maybe once a morning just to get some news. But that'll be it.

1

u/brakeline May 31 '23

I use the android app in windows. That's how much I love rif interface

1

u/yineedname May 31 '23

Chiming in as another with this exact same Reddit usage history. If RIF is over, I'm finally done with this site.

1

u/SrslyCmmon May 31 '23 edited Jun 01 '23

My work time was more productive before I learned of this website.

1

u/chronoserpent May 31 '23

Same here. 10 years on RiF. I've tried others but I've always come back. I can't stand the official app or the web browser site at all.

1

u/Torcharoon Jun 01 '23

Yep. Fuck this site without RIF.

1

u/InfiniteDescent Jun 01 '23

I'll probably be quitting as well

1

u/JustAGuyinLou Jun 01 '23

Same boat... I don't even know how bloody long I've used this app... I'm sad...

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '23

I, along with many long-time users, will probably quit Reddit due to this change

On one hand that's probably a great thing, as I've wasted thousands of hours on Reddit since the digg exodus.

On the other hand there's a ton of great resources I've dug out of old Reddit threads over the years.

1

u/Illadelphian Jun 01 '23

Same here, I've been on the site for almost 15 years and a huge percentage using rif. I hate the reddit app so much and new reddit. I am super addicted to reddit and have loved it for a long time for the ridiculous amount of information and discussion I've had with it.

I don't know if I could entirely cut it out but I will be waiting for the new competitor. Please someone make something similar and let's make reddit go the way of digg. It will be sad to leave but this is absurd. They are alienating their oldest, probably most prolific users by doing this and they know it. Fuck them, let's make something new.

1

u/Soffix- Jun 01 '23

I can't stand the new app, and that was before they made all the latest redesigns. I'm not going to use the official app, so I will simply leave reddit. Hopefully there will be a new space to shitpost and have fun.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '23 edited Jun 12 '23

Reddit was fun

u/spez would've prosecuted Aaron

1

u/provoko Jun 01 '23

Same, rif going away is a big deal for me.

Reddit should have just bought rif or helped the app grow with some kind of profit sharing

1

u/furball218 Jun 01 '23

Definitely. I won't be using the main app. Dumb fucks are stabbing a massive amount of their user base in the backs.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '23

Yes, I can't stand the default reddit app. It's truly horrendous. I'm ultra disappointed that RIF is going away. I've been using it since my first smart phone, my Droid X. Sad to think that the best days of the internet are behind us, and all we have to look forward to going forward is bloat and advertisements.

Reddit has gone to shit in the last 5 years anyways.

1

Omg, thank God I am not alone! I have my browser set to old.reddit.com. the official app and mainstream UI are horrendous.

1

u/FerretStereo Jun 01 '23

I'm one of those users who will quit using Reddit without this app. I've given the official app a try and it's a miserable experience. Will be really sad to see this one go

1

u/CozHesANinja Jun 01 '23

Yeah Reddit is gone now.

1

u/Mypopsecrets Jun 01 '23

Yep, my account has been around twelve years and I didn't actually start using Reddit until RIF. Sad news for sure, I can't imagine visiting any other way.

1

u/SissysofiaXD Jun 01 '23

I wonder if this is the whole point. Reddit doesn't want older users that care about quality content and functionality. Reddit wants what TikTok has, millions of what my buddy calls "zombie" users. People who just consume whatever garbage content is forced upon them. Death scroll to the latest trend and copy and spend money. Reddit wants users who don't even set their own subreddits on their homepage. The TikTokification of reddit is here. RIP to the website this used to be. Might as well be Facebook now.

1

u/MoPuWe Jun 01 '23

Same. Over a decade. Sad to see it go, it was truly the best app for Reddit.

1

u/ALEXH- Jun 01 '23

I know I will. The best app and layout to date. The official app sucks!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '23

Am 100% with you on this! Been using RIF coming up 10 years. Will never browse reddit actively again if it goes. Their App is fucken dogshit in comparison, and I hope this stupid decision damages their pockets and there is a decebt exodus of long term users.

1

u/sparkyman215 Jun 01 '23

Also a decade here. rif is just clean and functional

1

u/dickbutt_md Jun 01 '23

I will continue to use it on the desktop, but I will not use the reddit app. Which means I'll probably log in a few times a month. No more daily use...

1

u/bottomknifeprospect Jun 01 '23

I won't install the official app so yeah, I guess it's time for a change, let's see how I do... July 1st is soooon

1

u/Top_Rekt Jun 01 '23

Lol yeah if this happens, I'm out. Reddit is overvaluing their position but it's going the way of Digg. Someone else is just gonna be the new Reddit and everyone is gonna flock to that.

1

u/Agathocles_of_Sicily Jun 01 '23

I feel super alienated by all of the new shiny interfaces and apps. Reddit's charm has always been that it has a barebones, rudimentary interface in the world of overdeveloped social media designed to milk your data and attention.

I'm really gonna miss this app. Fortunately, we'll still have old.reddit for desktop.

It's the only place I've ever really consumed any news. That's what leaves me to believe that I'll give in and use the official trash Reddit app. Unless there are other alternatives that become popular.

1

u/FormerlyKnownAsBtg Jun 01 '23

1

u/Willyjwade Jun 01 '23

1

u/Toast_On_The_RUN Jun 01 '23

Exactly the same. I was 13 when I created my account I'm 24 now. It's the only reddit I know. What a heartbreaking message to see opening the app.

1

u/CorydorasLurker Jun 01 '23

Same here. Reddit is about to lose a ton of money.

1

u/journeyman28 Jun 01 '23

Holy fuck me too

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '23

Same here. I cant live without it! This will suck.

1

u/Jabronito Jun 01 '23

I 100% will quit. It will then turn into a highly monetized site with nothing but curated and boring bullshit.

1

u/enjaydee Jun 01 '23

The main reason I browse through reddit is due to how easy RIF made it.

I tried the official app and it's so bad.

I'm going to be one of many who will probably exit reddit

1

u/alb1234 Jun 01 '23

It's funny. I remember a big discussion around 2012 where users were predicting the types of changes that we've now seen materialized over the last few years. Of course, the response was always, "Nope. We're different! We're here for you first!" and it was laughable then because the end goal is always to control as much as you can and make as much money as possible. I haven't been too active on Reddit for years, but it's still a shame this is happening because I'll never use that garbage official app.

Hello myself

1

u/alb1234 Jun 01 '23

I'm not questioning your resolve, but many people will be quitting Reddit as quickly as all those celebs moved out of the US when Bush was re-elected and Trump was elected. I understand the anger this move by Reddit is causing. I hate it too. RIF is amazing. It was inevitable. I hope they do lose a massive number of users.

1

u/Doctor-Amazing Jun 01 '23

Same here. There's no way I'm using their terrible app. I'm either going back to Something Awful or whatever the new reddit replacement ends up being.

1

u/tmbr5 Jun 01 '23

+1

Now, where do we go from here?

1

u/redeux Jun 01 '23

Yeah, same. RIF is virtually the only way i interact with reddit (and why in my profile in have it pinned that i don't have Chat).

I find the desktop and mobile app experiences not great, even when using old.reddit. I'm already on reddit a fraction of the time I'm on discord.

Anyway, thanks for everything RIF dev. Fwiw id consider a paid subscription depending on the pricing, particularly if it was useage based. But out of principal itd be a hard pill to swallow since I've never understood why i should pay reddit to use their site (which includes why people buy those awards. Like you tell a joke in the store, a stranger laughs and then gives the store a few extra bucks. Donate that crap to charity or something)

1

u/curiiouscat Jun 01 '23

Same here! RIF is an incredible app. No frills, only Reddit. I paid for it ages ago. I'm so sad this is happening.

1

u/KPC51 Jun 01 '23

I, along with many long-time users, will probably quit Reddit due to this change

Definitely on mobile at least, which is 99.99% of my reddit time anyway

1

u/lizard_quack Jun 01 '23

I actually think it'll make me stop using reddit lol. No other app has clicked for me like this one.

1

u/vulturelyrics Jun 01 '23

Yeah reddit is unusable in the desktop and normal apps

1

u/septer012 Jun 01 '23

Same, official reddit app and website are pretty annoying. Enough to not use them.

1

u/NeatoAwkward Jun 01 '23

Nice knowing you all

1

u/wan2tri Jun 01 '23

It's 70/30 for me between old and rif, I still spend more time with desktop because of posting videos/images on subs lol

1

u/drew-and-not-u Jun 01 '23

After a decade on the platform, yeah there's no way I'd keep using Reddit if I have to use the official app. Very sad 😢

1

u/not-a-sound Jun 01 '23

Exact same here. Fuck reddit, they can go the way of digg now with this absolute bullshit.

1

u/morningisbad Jun 01 '23

I've never consumed Reddit in any other way other than the very occasional web link. This is a fuck up of epic proportions.

1

u/DORTx2 Jun 01 '23

I feel this, out of all the apps I use on my phone/computer RIF is what I'm on 99% of the time.

1

u/fneff379 Jun 01 '23

I literally forgot that this app was third party. I thought this was just Reddit.

1

u/morris1022 Jun 01 '23

I accidentally had to use the real app when I switched phones and I HATED IT

1

u/bcuzimadude Jun 01 '23

No idea so many people purely accessed Reddit through RIF. I'm in the same boat, I might actually just drop reddit after this.

1

u/musicmastermike Jun 01 '23

Dude...same. this will be like moving out of a house.

1

u/EdHominem Jun 01 '23

I honestly have trouble thinking about accessing the site in any other way, it's so ingrained.

And count me among the minority who would, yes, pay for a subscription so long as the experience is completely free of ads not otherwise disguised as posts.

Oh, and also all the other features which make RIF awesome.

1

u/fallenangel512 Jun 01 '23

You took the words right out of my mouth. Is there no way to make our discontent heard? How is this not anticompetitive behaviour on reddit's part?

1

u/iwishiwasaperson Jun 01 '23

I don't like change. I was introduced to reddit by a mate who was using this app. If it dies I'm out.

1

u/david98900 Jun 01 '23

I thought Reddit is fun was the official app for most of my early reddit days. It wasn't till I got a new phone and could transfer data that I figured it out. Not sure how I continue without it

1

u/WhatDoesN00bMean Jun 01 '23

Same. I've tried other third party apps and native app. Tried multiple times. Just couldn't get used to them.

I may be addicted to Reddit right now, but I was addicted to Facebook and Twitter and those have been out of my life for a while now. I will likely find something to take Reddit's place.

Thank you RIF for many years of enjoyment.

1

u/Hoobastankyball Jun 01 '23

I also exclusively use RIF. If it goes down, I won't be a user of reddit anymore. End of story.

1

u/CantStopWlnning Jun 01 '23

Remember bacon reader? Remember how much worse it was than rif? That's pretty much the only reason I went with rif, now all these years later I guess it's high time to quit reddit. Shame

1

u/penis-retard Jun 01 '23

Same. At least 9 years for me but maybe 10. I'm not even sure when this app was made but I've been with it for that long

1

u/DennisCherryPopper Jun 01 '23

This was the app I downloaded when I joined since my friends were using it. I can't even fathom using a different app as stupid as that sounds. It's just all I've literally ever known on my phone.

1

u/plolock Jun 01 '23

Same here

1

u/ry8919 Jun 01 '23

Digg all over again

1

u/rdmusic16 Jun 01 '23

100%, same here.

1

u/SoulessV Jun 01 '23

Yeah this will end my reddit use. Their app is dreadfully designed...

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '23 edited Aug 14 '23

I've been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really has been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that they have really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like.

1

u/biggestvictim Jun 01 '23

Yeah, I'm done after this. It's just unusable without it.

1

u/santz007 Jun 01 '23

Same here

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '23

Same.

1

u/scottyb1001 Jun 01 '23

I went to the dark side last year. Watch, phone. RIF is literally the only reason I still have an android tablet. Which is 95% of my reddit use. Thank you Dev of RIF for almost a decade of awesomeness.

1

u/tiktaktok_65 Jun 01 '23

same here. fuck that bloated official crap design. the look and feel felt the same wag dig did.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '23

Same for me. Well over a decade I think. When this whole thing kicks off in July and reddit kills it's apps, I think I'll be signing off of reddit for the most part. Been here since the Digg migration.

If anyone comes up with a viable alternative, please pass it around. Until then, thanks to the Dev for such incredible work for so many years.

See you later, RiF Cowboy.

1

u/Collapse2038 Jun 01 '23

Fuck I'm gonna give the official app a go I suppose, but it's generally just clunky feeling

1

u/thecasuallurker Jun 01 '23

Agreed. 100 percent will be leaving without RIF

1

u/Mitt_Robbedme Jun 01 '23

I've also been using RIF for almost the entire decade I've been on reddit. I've tried browser and the official app and they just don't cut it for me. I'll miss this a ton.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '23

Same here. I think it's been about a decade. I never used another app and I've scarcely used a PC to access reddit. I'll call quits once this app dies. It's really sad but on the other hand, the quality of the content has been quickly going downhill the last years. Maybe I'm getting too old. The kids are taking over. I shall use my time more productively.

1

u/zo0galo0ger Jun 01 '23

I'm with you, this app has been on my phone since I first had a smartphone, effectively - over a decade now. Sad day. Corporations gonna corporate.

1

u/goldkear Jun 01 '23

Same, I've used RIF for basically as long as I've used reddit. I literally can't imagine using anything else.

1

u/shriek Jun 01 '23

Yup, same here. I've been using this app for as long as I've been on reddit and will probably end with it too. Thank you u/talklittle for making reddit bearable in mobile.

They can shove all the ads in their app but no way in hell I'm using it.

1

u/JessMeNU-CSGO Jun 01 '23

I remember reading about broken arms on this app for the first time.

1

u/alu_ Jun 01 '23

Same. Fuck, this sucks

1

u/PathToEternity Jun 01 '23

I don't know what the little floating app bar is called these days at the bottom of an Android phone (the line of apps that does not change when you swipe between home screens), but rif is the app that sits in the center of mine.

That's the priority it's had on this phone since I got it 3-4 years ago. Front and center. #1 app.

1

u/Num_Pwam_Kitchen Jun 01 '23

Same situation. Same thoughts. What a bummer. I Was looking for a reason to leave "new Reddit" and killing RIF is going to do it. Why does everything got to suck so much when it gets big? Greedy.

1

u/RamBo-ZamBo Jun 01 '23

Same, I will quit reddit when RIF is gone. Getting too old for this shit anyway. Thank you dev, your app is great and has been part of my life for many years!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '23

Same basket. It doesn't help that the quality of posts and discussion seems to be generally declining. Perhaps this is the push I needed.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '23

Yep, I only use RIF, been 7(?) years now.
If RIF dies, I'm done with reddit, I tried the official app when I heard about the API changes, and there's a snowflake's chance in hell I'll use that hot pile of garbage.

1

u/Lineral Jun 01 '23

Same here, I don't pay often but I like putting my money where my time is and it's almost ridiculous how low this price was. I was immediately one of the ones who'd rather pay. I'm not unfortunately surprised with the way reddit develops...

Thank you for all!

1

u/Horst665 Jun 01 '23

RIF is the most used app on my phone.

Been good years :') always loved using it.

1

u/PrimeIntellect Jun 01 '23

Same, this fucking sucks. I tried to use other apps and had whiplash from how bad they were

1

u/vego Jun 01 '23

Same. I heard about this coming a while ago and have been waiting for it. I made this account 15 years ago when a first redesign started to bloat up the UI. At that point I must've been a lurker for about two years. I've been using RIF for as long as I can remember. Back when it was still called Reddit is fun. I don't even have the passwords for this and my alts anymore. There's no way in hell I'm using the garbage official app.

I hope this is finally Reddit's Digg moment. I won't be staying. Sadly, there's no alternative ready. But it's not been what it once was for years now.

Thank you /u/talklittle for all the work you put in and actually keeping Reddit fun and looking the way I came to love it for all these years.

1

u/amesann Jun 01 '23

Me too. Almost a decade on this app. I am devastated to hear this. I know everyone says this, but I really miss the old Reddit. I know apps and such must change with the times, but this... this is my favorite app. I use Reddit all day long. Huge props to the devs of this app. I mean, it had always run smoothly and efficiently. I'm going to really miss it.

1

u/IAmVeryStupid Jun 01 '23

Their app fucking sucks. This will literally be prohibitive for me, access wise

1

u/Rovden Jun 01 '23

God I've tried the official app and deleted it after ten minutes.

I don't have Facebook, haven't logged into Twitter since the buyout, looking like I'm about to be without any social media.

I'm sad because I'll really miss one subreddit that is a weird community that I love, but this old dog isn't going to get shoehorned into learning an inferior product for greed's sake.

1

u/snackynorph Jun 01 '23

Could not have said it better myself. I often and loudly proclaimed that the only way I ever used Reddit was through rif.

1

u/thetebe Jun 01 '23

Same situation here. RiF is the only way to read reddit on the phone for me.

Sad news.
