I remember Hillary doing really well in the debates against Trump and she still lost.

And I remember Obama doing poorly in the first debate with Romney, and all the panicking online afterwards.

... and then the campaign was "saved" when Paul Ryan got absolutely wrecked by ... Joe Biden.

Albeit; a very different Biden. :/

Biden's at his best when he's supporting other people, not singing his own praises. He couldn't defend himself against Trump without coming across poorly, his hands were tied by whomever (likely) told him not to go for zingers (since we've seen him cracking jokes lately it's not like he's unable to anymore). Honestly, I feel like standing up for others was McCain's strength too -- he never came across more presidential than when he told that lady that Obama was a good man.

But hey, I'm watching spazzy RFK jr accuse Biden of being frail while he can't sit still or stop his face from twitching, completely unable to form complete sentences but calling himself a 10x greater threat to the status quo than Bernie was, so he's clearly the best choice. The Hill: it's what's for dinner.
