This generation has been underwhelming Discussion

I bought a Series X at launch, and can’t think of a single game that has impressed me this gen. I’m a big Halo fan, and Halo Infinite felt like a letdown. I’m a Forza fan, and Forza Motorsport felt like a massive disappointment. I was exited for Starfield, but was underwhelmed after playing it.

It just feels like we’ve had no heavy hitters this gen, even 3rd party AAA games have been average at best. I guess the only hope I have left is with Gears 6, but aside from that, Microsoft needs to get their act together and start releasing some new games. It feels like games are taking way too long to make these days, we used to get bangers every year in the 360 gen. Even the Xbox One had more compelling games than what we have now

This gen has been all about GamePass for me

I feel like more often than not games I’m excited to play aren’t on GamePass, but games I’m willing to play are. That’s a weird feeling.

I've found alot of hidden bangers on gamepass this past year and it's saved me so much on gaming.

u/OfferNothinNvrChange Apr 21 '24

Such as?

7

u/skallywagUwU Apr 21 '24

Battle toads Brotato Cassette Beasts Celeste Firewatch Forager From space Grounded Immortals Fenyx arising It takes two Jusant Lightyear Frontier Little Witch in the Woods Minecraft Dungeons Monster Sanctuary MoonLighter Recore Redfall RoboQuest Sea of stars Serious sam Slay the spire Slime Rancher 2 Spiritfairer Superliminal Outer worlds Tunic Turnipboy Robs a Bank Unpacking Vampire Survivors

Those are the ones I've completed in full so far that aren't bigger name games like doom, deadspace, crisis and such. They're all bangers and hidden gems I never would have played without gamepass

I just wanted to say I appreciate the alphabetization. You deserve happiness.

u/skallywagUwU Apr 21 '24

I also had it one by one separated by a line but idk what happened when I posted it 😭🥹

Reddit on mobile messes up the post layout.

Currently I'm playing Fenix Riding. It's like a Greek Breath of the Wild. A solid 7/10 game that gets a good couple of chuckles out of me unexpectedly. It's not a masterpiece that anyone should spend $60 on, but it being in gamepass means you can overlook it's worse combat system and still enjoy its dungeons that don't hit the old Zelda levels, but are definitely than most of the puzzle ones that BotW would give you with their "here's a mechanic... Great, now you've learnt how it works, it's over" dungeons

u/bongo1138 Apr 21 '24

Sure, I’ve discovered some cool stuff I may not have otherwise, but a lot is just okay enough for me to stay subscribed.

2

u/doughaway421 Apr 23 '24

Plenty of games I am excited about come to game pass, but when they get there just end up being meh. Redfall (more of a bleh than a meh), Starfield, Forza Motorsport being great examples.

1

u/bongo1138 Apr 23 '24

Outside of first party, I’d say they’re not getting exciting additions to GamePass very often. Eiyuden Chronicles looks fun, and there’s been a handful of indies that I’ve enjoyed, too. But mediocre indies and AA games just aren’t terribly exciting, IMO.

u/doughaway421 Apr 23 '24

I have Gamepass Ultimate and the Sony PS+ Game Catalog.

Originally I had 0 interest in the Sony version. Knowing that none of their good games come to it on day 1, it looked like it was just a cheap imitation that they phoned in. I only got it because some ridiculous deal came in my account where I could get it for a year by paying like $40 on top of my basic PS+ subscription.

Now that I have them both, I find I actually find the Sony one to be better when it comes to the deeper catalog. Sure there are no heavy hitters on day 1, but there is tons of great lesser known games, as well as a lot of their older first party stuff that is available to play if you skipped on them when they were new.

On Gamepass, I find the main selling point is when they have their first party releasing on day 1 (as well as some third parties). That is a big money saver if you wanted the game to begin with. But it also only works if those day 1 games are actually good.

1

u/bongo1138 Apr 23 '24

Yeah, I agree Sonys is better but i hate that I can’t pay month to month b

u/DJfunkyPuddle Apr 21 '24

Yup, I've been incredibly happy with my Series X/GamePass. I'm also not just looking towards "the next big game". As long as there are games to play I'm happy.

17

u/hmiser Apr 21 '24

I’m still chugging along with my xbone, I’ve got 4 for local play with my kids so I’ve been waiting…

Waiting for a good reason or price drop, not for them to go to college lol.

Are GamePass things, maybe specific game, better on a Series X?

12

u/DJfunkyPuddle Apr 21 '24

You can probably find a list but a lot of games get an FPS boost and, imo more importantly, a loading time boost. Games like Destiny 2 and GTA Online take seconds to get in now when before I'd be staring at a blank screen for ages.

8

u/rockstardma Craig Apr 21 '24

Yup. I think the SSDs in this generation are the real game changers. I cannot imagine load times being more than 5ish seconds now. Not to mention all the quality of life features like quick resume and whatnot.

1

u/YNWA_1213 Apr 21 '24

SSDs and CPU. Threw a SATA SSD into my old One S, and it still chugs and takes forever to do basic tasks nowadays. Series X in comparison is butter.

2

u/GhoulishFPS Apr 21 '24

Still 3 - 4 working days to load into the tower🥲

14

u/jmcgil4684 Apr 21 '24

Coming from. PS4 background I bought the X and Gamepass for Starfield. Gamepass really surprised me with the amazing amount of quality titles. It also helps there were a few exclusives I hadn’t had the opportunity to play on PS. But as far as the X vs last gen, the graphical quality is a step up, but not a major one. The biggest enjoyment I get is load times being significantly shorter, (instantaneous really) and the lesser talked about “quick resume feature”. I love that aspect of it. As a dad of 3 teens I’m waiting to upgrade them as well, but having the newest gen myself,I don’t see a huge difference, as to think you might be missing out or something.

1

u/theoriginalmofocus Apr 21 '24

I did the same except bought physical starfield. I dont know if its just because we're older or what but I've got ps5 and X and nothing is really all that great. I'll have fun for awhile and then get busy doing other things. I will say the first new gen game I played was cyber punk on my ps5 and that game alone definitely made me realise how much faster and graphically better the systems are.

1

u/jmcgil4684 Apr 21 '24

Yea most fun I’ve had is with the Witcher next gen upgrade

1

u/hmiser Apr 21 '24

I’m hearing “vastly improved load times” and that sounds great.

Anyone know how the S compares to the X in this regard?

2

u/Ty20_ Apr 21 '24

Just so you’re aware, make sure you do not pay monthly for game pass. Pay for it every three years and you’ll save $400

8

u/MisterHairball Apr 21 '24

Can you use game pass on a pc? I just can't justify the cost of a game console with how everything is

7

u/TheAbsentMindedCoder Apr 21 '24

Yes and it includes pc exclusives

6

u/Glittering_Bar_9497 Apr 21 '24

Not only can you use it on pc but you can use it on the rog ally and Lenovo legion go. Better yet your progress in some of the games transfers from console to pc and back so you very rarely lose your progress. The rog ally paired with the series x is an amazing combo. Also got a tower with a 3070ti but I find myself chilling on the couch or in bed on the ALLY all the time.

2

u/livinthedreambaby Apr 21 '24

I like using my series x more than my gaming pc it’s a very impressive console and simple and quick to use. We haven’t even seen what these are truelly capable of

3

u/Escodl Apr 21 '24

Not only can you use gamepass..you get all the Xbox Exclusives, PS5 games are starting to go over there. You can emulate everything else like the ps1, ps2, gamecube, switch..games are cheaper, you don't have to pay extra to play online...and You'll never have to worry about 30fps games again.. PC is the way to go right now....and with the Sony CEO talking about PC being the future and they'll be letting PC gamers earn PS trophies with the release of Ghost of Tsushima next month...,the PS Exclusivity window is only gonna get smaller and small

1

u/librariandraws Apr 21 '24

Yeah, but it's important to point out that there are some exclusive titles to both PC and console. A LOT of overlap too, though. It's a hell of a value.

9

u/istara Apr 21 '24

Replaying Elder Scrolls has just been amazing. Just utterly fantastic.

2

u/livinthedreambaby Apr 21 '24

The series x with gamepass has been just awesome

18

u/HaikusfromBuddha Apr 21 '24

Yup I’ve played most of my games from Gamepass. Loved Persona 3 Reload.

12

u/Insaniaksin Apr 21 '24

When I buy games and not finish them I feel guilty.

When I play game pass games I stop playing them when I want without feeling guilty about not finishing them.

Also makes it easy to play and find games I never would have normally tried.

1

u/culminacio Apr 21 '24

Why would you feel guilty? Games have totally different lengths and totally different reasons to play them. E.g. if you've played Witcher 3 for 50 hours you're not even close to ending the main story but it has already given you so much.

1

u/Insaniaksin Apr 21 '24

Just a personal thing.

I played Witcher 3 for over 200 hours combined. One playthrough on Normal and again on Death March.

I decided if the game just isn't fun I'll refund it if I can or otherwise move on. Mediocre games are not worth my time if I'm not enjoying them.

6

u/CorruptCamel Doom Slayer Apr 21 '24

Agreed. I have played so many games in so many genres that I would never have played and now look forward to games and series that would never have interested me. Absolutely love Gamepass.

1

u/CrawlerCow Apr 21 '24

I like GP as well, but find those “free” games end up leaving before I get a chance to finish them…yeah I’m a slow player and hop from game to game a lot. So I end up waiting for a sale and buy a game that’s a GP game anyway. At least I know it’s still there when I get to it.

7

u/TradeMan1000 Apr 21 '24

MS figured out that gamers with GamePass actually purchase more games than non-GP users, which seems counterintuitive, but it's definitely the truth. It's exposed me to all sorts of games I otherwise wouldn't have tried, but end up buying. The massive back catalogue of games we have access to is staggering. For me, this generation is about incremental changes that improve the gaming experience (SSD with almost no load times, Quick Resume, 4K at 60, FPS Boost/Auto HDR) and that's absolutely fine with me. I think the XSX is the pinnacle of gaming machines. It isn't the strongest from a generational exclusive standpoint, but I'm not really that worried about it. With MS working to copy Nintendo and Sony's strategy with 4 AAA exclusives yearly from their massive studio acquisitions, I think we'll be absolutely fine as Xbox gamers.

3

u/__thrillho Apr 21 '24

This gen has been all about you for me

5

u/C4ptainchr0nic Founder Apr 21 '24

For me too up until last month. Then I tried FFXIV.... And whoa if that was crack then I would be a full blown crack head at this point. I haven't played anything since and I don't think I'll really want to for quite a while.

Try it. Just a bit. One hit... It's free the first time

2

u/Knautical_J Apr 21 '24

For real, got to make my way through a huge backlog of games

1

u/Agreeable-Beyond-259 Apr 21 '24

Kinda weird how it's all short indie pixel hand drawn crap though

Bought series X at launch around 800 CDN and am playing SNES graphics games

1

u/militantcookie Apr 21 '24

Bought series x when it came out, signed up to gamepass. Only games I bought are games that I played on gamepass and enjoyed but then left gamepass. I guess I'm the exact target audience for the series generation of xbox.

1

u/Birkin07 Apr 21 '24

Played Brotato yesterday. Game pass rules.

1

u/RedFoxBadChicken Apr 21 '24

Xbox One had a robust game pass. It's really not at all new to the Series X

1

u/Soul_Forge2112 Apr 21 '24

Definitely, I didn’t bought a single game since series x launch.

1

u/dethrock Apr 21 '24

I agree with you. But honestly other when it comes to the actual console, there's very little difference between the Series X and my old One X.

4

u/BudWisenheimer Apr 21 '24

But honestly other when it comes to the actual console, there's very little difference between the Series X and my old One X.

GamePass is probably the biggest factor making those two consoles vastly different from each other in my case. There are so many different games I want to hop around with throughout the week (partly just squeezing in a couple minutes for a Microsoft Rewards quest, but mostly just trying so many things from such a huge library), that having ~8 games in Quick Resume on Series X made my Scorpio (great little console otherwise) completely obsolete. It’s a literal game-changer, and now I can’t imagine having GamePass without it.

3

u/A_Minimal_Infinity Apr 21 '24

Tried Brotato for the achievements on rewards. Hooked on that. Apparently I never finished Rise of the Tomb Raider, so I’ve been playing that again too.

Love game pass and quick resume.

1

u/BudWisenheimer Apr 21 '24

Absolutely. Brotato is currently pinned in my QR. I did the same with Vampire Survivors … so generous with the Achievements. I’ll add TR to the mix. I loved the originals in the 90s, but I haven’t played the newer trilogy yet.

0

u/mistadoctah Apr 21 '24

Game pass sucks, honestly. I’ll sub and have 200 games infront of me and want to play none of them, because they’re all pretty shit and old games.

Out of the super premium triple A games, probably bought them myself at one stage.

Part of the fun of gaming for me is actually picking and committing to a game. Game pass takes that away for me.

0

u/Squarians Apr 21 '24

And the smaller indie games on GP are the ones that I enjoy the most

0

u/ChronographWR Apr 21 '24

Yeah people dont buy games on Xbox só they are porting them to PS5 now.
