Honestly, I think Starfield is going to need a "Cyberpunk 2.0" style update (maybe two) if it really wants to be a 12 year game.

The Phantom Liberty expansion and 2.0 update for Cyberpunk dropped shortly after Starfield was released. I had played maybe 5 or so hours of Starfield, but then moved on to Cyberpunk and put in about 60 hours into the 2.0 update and expansion.

Since then I've tried to go back to Starfield and I just can't. The game has just so many problems. And I'm not talking about bugs or glitches (although those are still around). I'm talking about core design choices and foundational issues with the game's mechanics and systems.

The UI and inventory management feel completely outdated. The talent trees are completely boring and uninteresting. Space "travel", to me, feels completely pointless given that you can't actually fly anywhere in your ship. And although I've tried to move past it, the plethora of loading screens just really kill the flow of the game for me.

I'm a huge Bethesda fan and the Elder Scrolls and Fallout games are some of my favorites ever, but Starfield was a colossal disappointment for me. I now have a total of 17 hours in the game but I'm just done and have no interest in revisiting it at this point. As I mentioned, it would take a massive expansion or 2.0 style update that overhauls everything in order for me to give it another chance.

You nailed the issues with Starfield. It's all these little things adding up, for me its really the loading screen, but I would have accepted it if there was space travel or more interesting things to see and do.

Every problem I have leads into another problem. like you could go from "outpost building is horrible" to "why tf can't I buy a ship with guns"

And the best advice I've seen from literally everyone who defends the game is just to ignore all of it and play it like it's the only game you've played in years and you'll enjoy it. Even ignore how delusional the dev responses are and how some of them have actually stated that they didn't care about quality. Like they compared legitimately landing on the moon to their game... Please tell me that Bethesda is just super lax about cannabis during work hours.

Your experience is mine as well. Quit Starfield to play Phantom Liberty.

Ended up replaying Cyberpunk from beginning to end. Starfield does nothing as well as Cyberpunk. Not one thing.

And it’s not even remotely close.

playing starfield made me appreciate cyberpunk so much more... even straight cyberpunk on launch.... it was just a much better game even with its faults. Starfield was just a soulless, husk of a game with absolutely no care put into it imo.

Yeah cyberpunk was buggy but the heart and feel of the game was still there at launch, I’d take launch cyberpunk over launch starfield any day

How many years later and somehow cyberpunk's launch water physics is better than starfield's, the reason why you can't dive is because they couldn't be bothered to add a floor to water sources and people think it was snuffed for goty. How is it even in the RPG category?

If you look at GTA 5 and the GTA6 trailer there is a huge jump. This is what I expected with Starfield honestly and they never did. Imagine this game in unreal engine 5? Good God. But no. They stuck with the same outdated engine from years ago and a lot of the game is also outdated. I have a hard time believing there will much staying power within a few years let alone 12. Either way they will need to go to an updated engine moving forward. I mean there was zero excuse with Starfield and they did it anyways. Maybe they just figured screw it, the community will make it better with mods why bother. lol

I made the mistake of pausing my Starfield playthrough to check out Phantom Liberty.

I don’t want it play Starfield now. It just feels so dated in comparison.

Same but with more hours in. I finally broke and looked up the twist / ending / NG+ stuff and it’s dumber than I imagined.

I agree with you but thing is cyberpunk was really good before 2.0. I played it last year and only noticed a few bugs. The rpg system still allowed for vastly different builds and the story was tremendous. I guess my point is starfield doesn’t have as many redeeming qualities. The storylines, besides uc vanguard, are generally okay, and some are quite bad. I want to see Bethesda do well but idk they seem out of touch.

Yeah I agree. Cyberpunk got a bad rap at launch because it was a technical mess, but the game itself was still pretty good. It was all just massively improved with the 2.0 update and Phantom Liberty.

Starfield feels like it's in a much worse spot in terms of the design of its systems and mechanics. It's going to need a huge overhaul that's going to take years, and I'm not sure Bethesda is even going to put that much into it given that they're also working on Elder Scrolls VI.
