Vehicle Safety Inspection Requirements? discussion

For the life of me I can’t seem to find the specs listed anywhere. Just the basics like lights, tires, brakes, etc.

Surely it must be listed somewhere online, right?

Just had a shop fail me for having a plug in my tire which blew my mind. I was able to look up in 30 seconds that it’s fine in my prior state as long as it’s in the tread; not the sidewall. Just curious what the actual regulation is here.

While the requirements are listed on the dot website, here is what to expect from chapel hill tire https://www.chapelhilltire.com/what-is-checked-during-a-vehicle-safety-inspection/

Where is the plug on the tire. In the tread or sidewall. If it's on the side wall, it probably will not pass because the integrity of the tire is now comprised. If it's on the tread, it should be fine as long as the tread is within spec.

It’s in the tread. That’s actually exactly how the Virgina code reads. Tread is fine sidewall’s not. Seems like NC doesn’t really specify.

I think this shop’s just lost my business. They ordered a tire for me but I haven’t paid for it yet. Said it would be in Friday. I’m going to ask around a few other shops and see what they say tomorrow morning.

Had two rope plugs on my mud tires, they never cared.
