THEORY The reason our Mark didn’t side with Viltrum at first is because he was a late bloomer

2.5k Upvotes

Basically, my theory started when I tried to think about why Mark would ever, even in other universes, side with his dad against Earth. He grew up there and was purely human for most of his life before his powers awakened. Until I thought, it’s a possibility this is only the case in our reality. Perhaps in the other universes, Mark got his powers at the normal Viltrumite age, which is much earlier in their life, probably during puberty. This is a very vunerable stage of life, and if Mark got his powers then, and trained with his father at that age, he would more easily believe that the Viltrumites are better than humans, and deserve control of the planet. Given how heavily emphasized Mark’s status as a “late bloomer” is, in both the comics and the show, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was the aspect of his life that makes him a hero. What do you guys think?

THEORY I was rewatching the Omni-Man vs Guardians fight, and something odd caught my eye, so I told a few friends. Thought this sub might find it interesting.

THEORY During the Guardians fight, did Omni-Man purposely let them get a few hits on him so that when the medical examiners came it wouldn’t be too obvious that he just massacred them?

THEORY “One day, you too will die”. Prediction: Robot (Rudy) somehow kills Omni-man later on in the story.

PREDICTION: Robot (Rudy) kills Omni-man later on in the story.

This line in the opening of Episode 1, Season 2 seemed as a clear foreshadowing to me.

Also I believe that Rudy has plans that are not revealed to us yet. Later on he will have a more major role in Invincible’s story.

I’m sure comic book readers are laughing at how off this is. Or maybe not.

THEORY My explanation for Omni-man's power scaling

1.7k Upvotes

I think we have all noticed the problem- sometimes Omni-Man can tank massive explosions, a space laser, air-to-air missiles and can use his body as a wmd by flying through an alien city like a MAC projectile, but other times he gets hurt from a punch to the face or a tiny little cherrybomb. I came up with a theory to help explain this.

In the first episode he explains to Mark thay Viltrumites can manipulate their position and move freely in space, allowing them to fly, and also how they can use this to make their own leverage for punches. It might be a leap here, but I think this is how they appear to be nearly invincible at times as well.

Later in the episode when Mark confronts the bully he looks hurt from the first punch, then gradually takes them until at the last one he looks like a brick wall, as if his durability is something that he has to conciously control and he is just learning how it works.

I think this is true with Omni-Man as well. Every time we see one of his extreme feats of invincibility he is focused specifically on taking it, not flinching in the face of terrible force. On the other hand, when he is caught off-guard or while facing multiple opponents in hand-to-hand combat he cannot focus on defense as much, and thus he can be hurt or even potentially killed by far weaker opponents than himself, to the point where even just mechanically-assisted human corpses could rough him up.

THEORY Rex's TBI: An Oversimplified Prediciton of Neuropsychological Deficits

First, let's inspect the areas likely affected:

front view

side (sagittal) view

Let's ignore the placement of the gun as it doesn't line up with the trajectory of the bullet. it looks like the trajectory would likely pass through the brain as such:

diagram with likely path

The path would also likely be exclusively in the right hemisphere, and luckily avoiding midbrain structures (very important for involuntary functions, memory, information sharing between the brain areas, etc.), as well as hindbrain structures that would make death a certainty.

Likely affected areas are (in order of trajectory): superior areas of the occipital lobe (visual processing), inferior/medial areas of the parietal lobe (sensory processing), small parts of the superior cingulate gyrus (involved in regulating impulsive behaviors, memory, etc.), and the frontal lobe (specifically the motor areas).

What deficits I would expect from this damage could include:

  • visual-perceptual processing - from occipital lobe damage. this is a pretty broad deficit, and can imply many different behaviors. This would also likely be specific to dorsal stream deficits (how we see 'where' things are) and could cause problems like poor angular judgments, poor coordination of movement in space, visuoconstructional deficits, unilateral neglect, and topographic disorientation.
  • left hemiplegia / hemiparesis - from parietal / motor areas damage. think of classic stroke victim signs, where one side of their body becomes weak or limp. In this case, I would expect Rex to show at least weakness on the left side of his body (left side due to contralateral processing)
  • left neglect - from occipital lobe damage. While the right hemisphere pays attention to your entire visual field, your left hemisphere only pays attention to your right visual field; so damage to the right hemisphere can cause this deficit where you are not paying attention to things in your left visual field. for example, a person with this deficit may shave only the right side of their face, or when instructed to draw an analog clock, will only fill in the numbers on the right side of the clock.
  • Anosognosia/euphoria - from frontal lobe damage. Anosognosia is where you can be largely unaware or in denial of even having a deficit. A story we were told in lecture was of a stroke patient who was paralyzed, asking the nurse if they could go upstairs to grab them a drink because they're 'just too tired to get up right now'. Another outcome could be strangely enough, feeling of euphoria

I don't have the time to go into much more detail, and it would most certainly turn into delusional theory crafting to try and understand more complex deficits from a fictional animated character's TBI. But just to note, there is a very interesting implication of personality changes that would happen due to frontal lobe damage, but it would be extremely difficult to tell what those might be. If you're curious what that looks like in a real-life case study; read about Phineas Gage.

Good thing the invincible universe has comic book logic, but at the same time, it's not all that surprising that Rex could have possibly survived this injury. I am not going to take into account the brain swelling, bleeding, debris, or shock that his body would have gone through, so let's just assume those doctors pulled some magic like you've never seen to make it a good outcome, since from what I remember from the episode Rex is pretty much walking out of it with no long-term issues (unless you count loving home improvement magazines a deficit).

Overall, hope you enjoyed this relatively shitty neuropsychological analysis.

THEORY The name "Viltrumite".

I hope this has been said before by someone else because it feels kinda obvious (not trying to sound cocky) but also not so obvious. I was just wondering if anybody notices or agrees that the species name "Viltrumite" and planet name "Viltrum" comes from the part of the face known as the "Philtrum" which is the space between your nose and upper-lip, and the reason the males have such prominent mustaches is because the name comes from the spot where a mustache would grow, the Philtrum.

THEORY Anybody else notice this really subtle detail in S2E7?

When Donald is telling Cecil about what they have on-hand to deploy against Anissa, he mentions that they have “Q-bombers” available. I looked them up and couldn’t find a real life example of what these are. However, earlier in the season when Angstrom is questioning another universe’s Mark about how humanity beat him, he mentions that they ambushed Nolan using “experimental quantum bombs” that cost the human race “most of Europe”. Could this be what the Q-bombers are? The use of Q feels like a very specific letter to be a coincidence, plus as we all know this show doesn’t really do meaningless coincidences. Maybe that’s part of the reason Cecil decided against using these, maybe they’re still experimental, he didn’t want the collateral damage, or he didn’t think they’d get to her before she was in another location. Just an interesting thought
