Is Mark Korean-American in the comics as well? DISCUSSION

I thought his race/ethnicity was something present in the comics but I’ve been reading through them and have found no mention of it so far

Nah, it's just in the show. Steven Yuen and Sandra Oh kill it imo , so good example of a more diverse cast done right

Is everyone here blind? I’m looking at comic panels right now and Debbie is clearly Asian

Yeah, I don't know people are talking about. No way in hell this is a white lady.

Also Duplikate is Chinese. Mark and his mom are Korean descent. They’re gonna look slightly different from Kate because not all Asians look the same 💀💀💀

Yeah but even Koreans look different from other Koreans

2

u/hhhhhhhhjhggg Apr 02 '24

As a whole they are remarkably similar. I .am Chinese and when I visited Korea I had the immediate feeling that I was not “part of the family”based on appearances alone despite my skin tone being the same. I don’t get that vibe in other Asian countries because the locals are pretty diverse.

Korea has had a very insulated history constrained within a very small land mass. They are probably the most homogenous group amongst all Asians.

Not sure why you were downvoted…

"He's Laotian, ain't you Mister Khan?" - Cotton Hill

Such a great, layered scene.

4

u/rockmodenick Apr 02 '24

It really was. Cotton, a Paragon of hate in many ways, shows just how much less ignorant he is than the well-meaning but willfully ignorant crew. And that's just one thing that was going on.

What if they aren't actually duplicates???

Comic Debbie always seemed Italian or some type of Spanish ancestry to me. While Italian was not considered 'white' back at the start of the 20th it is now so...? I guess we'd have to ask Kirkman.

3

u/pumpsnightly Apr 02 '24

Yeah I always thought she was Hispanic or something

21

u/LexeComplexe Apr 02 '24

Wtf makes you think she's Italian? I am genuinely so confused how anyone could think that. There is nothing about her that speaks Italian to me

3

u/DepartureDapper6524 Octoboss Apr 02 '24

She has olive-ish skin and very black hair

12

u/GlaceBayinJanuary Apr 02 '24

It's just my knee-jerk reaction. I can't say why because it's just the answer my brain gave me. While there's nothing about her that spoke Italian to you I guess it could be possible that me and you are not the same person [Citation Needed] and as such we have differences in life experience?

Looking further into this it seems Kirkman intentionally left it vague. Given that there's no real answer we all just get to see what we see. We're both right!

13

u/Xciv Apr 02 '24

Yeah it's vague for sure. It's like how a lot of anime characters are racially ambiguous and asians see them as asian characters and caucasian people see them as caucasians.

2

u/poembug Apr 02 '24

When I was a kid, I thought Superman was asian. Because he had black hair, olive skin, the animations didn't give him retinas, and Dean Cain who had asian blood was Superman on TV at the time. People latch on to different, wacky, unintentional shit especially if they don't look into it that deeply.

2

u/GlaceBayinJanuary Apr 02 '24

Superman has been drawn by a lot of people and his look has changed a lot. Lots of people having lots of different ideas of what he looks like with regard to race makes sense. I always saw him as being vaguely Jewish what with the dark and somewhat curly hair and his alien name being kinda Hebrew ish sounding.

It's all subjective and there's no right answer. If Dean Cain was your formative version of Superman then him having Asian blood makes sense.

she does look like she could be Italian, plus the wine

Very much Asian.

10

u/RenterMore Apr 02 '24

Insane to me that people in this thread call this an Italian lady lol

1

u/Penguinmanereikel Allen the Alien Apr 02 '24

C-context?!

3

u/TheChartreuseKnight Apr 02 '24

One of the first panels of Invincible. Mark is in the bathroom. Debbie needs to brush her teeth. She soon barges in, much to Mark's horror. I thought this scene was in the show?

3

u/seriouslees Apr 02 '24

Her knocking and mention of a camera flash were absolutely not in the show. She just suddenly barges in while he's reading a comic book while pushing a mess... you know, like real humans do all the time...

1

u/DepartureDapper6524 Octoboss Apr 02 '24

Why not? It looks very ambiguous to me. Are you going to say that couldn’t be an Italian woman?

0

u/Protoman89 Apr 02 '24

Never seen an asian woman with lips like that, looks hispanic to me

0

u/BeautyDuwang Apr 02 '24

I could see some panels of her being interpreted as a Latina, but I've never seen her as a white woman

1

u/DepartureDapper6524 Octoboss Apr 02 '24

Many latinas are white women

45

u/treetopkingdom The Elephant Apr 02 '24

No, she’s drawn different from dupli-Kate and every other Asian character. She has the same eye shape as all the white characters

It’s supposed to be ambiguous though. Because when asked, Kirkman just called him viltrumite American .

42

u/OOF-MY-PEE-PEE Apr 02 '24

breaking news: person on reddit discovers that not every asian person looks the same

20

u/treetopkingdom The Elephant Apr 02 '24 edited Apr 02 '24

No, but that’s not the point of my comment. Artist will definitely try and draw similar features for Asian characters

Not give them the same eye shape and sometimes color as all the non Asian characters.

In the show, there’s no ambiguity

-8

u/LexeComplexe Apr 02 '24

No your point was you think Asian people must look a certain way or they can't be Asian. And not all Asian people have the same eye shape either! You're just being racist (I don't care whether that was the intent or not, doesn't change the fact that you are by definition being racist with your assumptions)

8

u/treetopkingdom The Elephant Apr 02 '24 edited Apr 02 '24

All I said was, it wasn’t obvious just from looking at her. She has the same eye shape as the other non Asian characters. And no other features that commonly belong to people of Asian decent. And that kirkman wanted it to be ambiguous.

I’m not saying she can’t be, but it certainly wasn’t intended. Until the show

Mark in the show, has more easily identifiable Asian features, now no one is assuming he’s Latino, Everyone knows he’s Asian.

1

u/Thebaldsasquatch Amber Bennett Apr 02 '24

You’re blatantly wrong. Look at the first comic panel she appears in.

I assumed she was Latina.
