Both of them barely qualify as “characters” so who cares?

Well i heard Amazon couldn’t acquire several popular characters so that’s why they kept Rae alive to have her return and replace on of said characters so who knows maybe she’s develop more a personality.

Why wouldn't they have the rights to certain characters? It's not like there independent books, there all the same property.

Image Comics is a creator-owned company, which means that all the writers and artists retain their media rights.

From Image Comics own FAQ

I believe some characters where not made by Robert Kirkman so now they can't use those characters. They also changed from Science Dog to Seance Dog.

Tek Jacket is another one which I’m not sure how that’ll work cuz didn’t he play like a decent role in the comic book?

He does have a decent role, but it’s nothing that isn’t easily replaced or overwritten.

is this some weird projection?

1

u/Quailman5000 Mar 29 '24

Idk but from a marketing perspective it makes sense to race/gender swap characters to appeal to a wider audience.

1

u/Buddy-Junior2022 Mar 30 '24

Yeah and for story reasons if they want to do something else with the character

u/wimpymist Mar 29 '24

But they aren't all owned by Kirkman. Some are shared and have appeared other places

13

u/Blood4Blud Mar 29 '24

Tech Knight is owned by the creator of The Boys and was in Invincible for a few key issues.

35

u/NonameB4ndit Mar 29 '24

You sure you’re not thinking of Tech Jacket?

Cause the Boys comic wasn’t under the image comics publication. It was under Dynamite

17

u/Blood4Blud Mar 29 '24

You’re right Tech Jacket. 🤦🏾‍♂️

13

u/MaskedZuchinni Mar 29 '24

You sure you are not confusing tek Knight with Tech Jacket?

u/DepartureDapper6524 Octoboss Mar 29 '24

How did you come up with this nonsense

17

u/MARATXXX Mar 29 '24

No, they are owned by kirkman, at least partially, as they’re image comics characters. But they’re part of other licenses that amazon hasn’t paid for.

Some of them are, though. Like Brit or Astounding Wolfman. In fact Cecils first comic appearance wasn't even in Invincible. Hell even Spawn exists in the Invincible universe.

Also in one issue of Invincible we see a cameo from Mark's universes versions of Rick and Shane from Walking Dead.

36

u/ThunderBlack14 Mar 29 '24

That's not a problem at all, since The Walking Dead is also made by Kirkman.

20

u/JeremyR2008 Octoboss Mar 29 '24

I know I just really liked that cameo when I saw it and wanted to mention it

2

u/Thusgirl Mar 29 '24

I wonder how that'll work with rights (because of the TV series). It'd be cool to get a cameo in the show too!

u/InvinciblePLUSAmber Mar 29 '24

I read the comics and don't think I noticed. I love The Walking Dead. What issue is that?

1

u/JeremyR2008 Octoboss Mar 29 '24

I read compendiums so it blurs together but I'm preety sure it's in the 80s or low 90s for issues. Don't have the book on me right now so that's the closest range I can give. It's after Mark comes back from space but before the flaxans come back to fight monster girl and robot.

2

u/InvinciblePLUSAmber Mar 29 '24

Ok. Thanks. I'm going to look for it.

2

u/JeremyR2008 Octoboss Mar 29 '24

Of course. Walkimg dead and invincible are 2 of my favorite comics. So I'm just happy to help a fellow fan

u/pixelatedcrap Mar 29 '24

The Spider-Man cameo was more cool. But it also wasn't as much of a cameo, really.

1

u/JeremyR2008 Octoboss Mar 29 '24

Yeah if anything it was more of an invincible cameo since that issue was published by marvel

In episode 6, Angstrom Levy passes through a zombie filled universe, which is most likely a callback to the walking dead (also "the walking dread" as that is how the comic references TWD.)

1

u/Ekillaa22 Mar 29 '24

Where did Cecil first appear c

1

u/JeremyR2008 Octoboss Mar 29 '24

Brit: Cold Death Vol 2 1

43

u/YakuzaKaru Mar 29 '24

They have the rights to Invincible, but not every image comics character that happens to also show up in Invincible

17

u/Olin_123 Mar 29 '24

Image comics is creator run, so even though there was a bunch of cameos from fellow Image Comics series, Amazon would have to go to each individual rights holder to get permission.

u/seejaybee97 Battle Beast Mar 29 '24

There actually are some spin off character in invincible that have their own books and were made by different people than just kirkman

5

u/HorsNoises Mar 29 '24

Astounding Wolfman, Brit, Tech Jacket, and Science Dog all had independent books.

3

u/Pupulauls9000 The Immortal Mar 29 '24

How Image Comics work is that all characters and properties are completely owned by their original creators. There were several characters from Image that appeared in Invincible that aren’t owned by Robert Kirkman.

3

u/Locem Mar 29 '24

We would have seen a new character named "Brit" at the end off the Lizard League massacre if that were true.

2

u/ArthurMorgan694 Omni-Man Mar 30 '24

It doesn't matter. Some characters were not made by Kirkman. Some are from a different comic (Tek Jacket).

The same situation was with that weird Gotham show. They got the right to make a story about gothem, but were forbidden from using the Batman ir the Joker. So they wrote around it.

1

u/notmyfirst_throwawa Mar 29 '24

Its exactly like that, thats why they couldn't have science dog

1

u/jjhannn Mar 30 '24

Im probably late to this since its been 18 hours but… even thought theyre part of the same universe, theyre still different property and need to be legally allowed in the invincy universe to be placed in the show. Science Dog, Brit, Spawn, Firebreather, Shadow Hawk, Tech Jacket, Savage Dragon, Capes Inc. are all under their own independent books making them hard to be placed in the show. Sighhhhh* makes the world a lil less full tbh

1

u/Y_Brennan Mar 30 '24

But Science Dog, Brit, and Tech Jacket were all created by Kirkman? Is it because they were created by other artists that they can't get them?

1

u/jjhannn Mar 31 '24

Possibly? I remember Kirkman stating it in a comic con interview where theyre outside under the shade. He states that Science Dog had to be changed to seance dog and gives the reason why. I just dont remember what he said
