One of the first times he's voiced a character that actually felt like a distinct character and not just Seth Rogan

Helps that he's playing an established character, that wasn't written for him to play.

Yeah, I feel like the "Seth Rogen just plays himself" criticism is a rough on the bloke when that's all people cast and write him as. He makes a really spectacular Allen.

A ton of those actors that "only play themselves" is because that's what they get cast as, because that's what people go/want to see. I'm sure while some of them like it, they actually do enjoy playing something else..as they probably didn't want to become an actor to not actually act.
