I'm convinced this is the case. Cecil is paranoid as fuck, so is Immortal. Together, they ran a full background on the dude and confirmed he was just some sad loser martian who couldn't pay his rent and was struggling to assimilate to human society.

Plus he could be useful and only needs to be paid in frozen pizzas.

Yeah I'm sure when they discussed salary and the guy accepted an entire 5 dollars for a month of labour and said that he would love to use this money to "buy human goods and services with my money that I earned as a human", they probably figured out something was up.

Even Rex is openly questioning what is up with this guy.
