Dude can afford a house on a minimum wage salary, has a social circle that cares for him, and as far as I can tell doesn't pay taxes.

In this episode Squidward travels 2000 years in the future to 4017, so this episode took place in 2017. And since SB-129 came out in 1999, that would mean part of SpongeBob was actually ahead of our time.

Maybe. But then again do you know what N.D stands for? Bc I sure dont

I've never seen that used to describe a date? Since in the real world we use "BCE, CE, BC, AD" my point was that "2017 ND" in the SpongeBob universe could be a totally different date then 2017 CE/AD in the real world

Well I thought the joke here was we were being super specific about what year SpongeBob takes place in. Tbh though idk what "a" looks like in future font so you could be right

5

u/-FalseProfessor- 1997 1d ago

Wait, SpongeBob is a period piece?

7

u/Accomplished-Ad-7799 1996 1d ago

No, but art is always affected by the time period it was made in.

Kinda like how star trek next generation is set in the year 3000 or something, but everybody has haircuts from the 1980s

8

u/Few-Willingness-3820 2004 1d ago

Crazy how he has all that and still isn't happy.

1

u/Lukescale 10h ago

He was taught what happiness was by his boomer Parents and never questioned it.

/s he just has a loud crack addict neighbor

3

u/2manyBi7ches 1997 1d ago

At least I can die in a tent with a bag of fent

3

u/Dark_Wolf04 2004 1d ago

Pretty sure he makes less than minimum wage. Mr Krabs is a cheap bastard

1

u/SouthBayBoy8 2004 1d ago

The existence of a government and police force implies Bikini Bottom has taxes

Wake up, brush teeth, shower, eat breakfast, go to work, lunch break, continue working, go home, eat dinner, watch tv/play games, sleep, repeat.

u/Helianthus-res-M 2005 1d ago

Its managable if you can actually move forward in the job

4

u/iconicspot 1d ago

We do this for 40 years then we die.

I remember when r/GenZ was about nostalgic things and not about choosing which old geezer is better or how hard life is

5

u/Dramatic_Syllabub_98 1d ago

Welcome to generation talk. Starts with nostalgia, ends in the mentality of crochety old people.

6

u/geofox8 1d ago

It’s almost like not everyone is having a good time. 🤷‍♂️

The reality is that most people either dislike their jobs, the pay, can’t afford a house or are grinding to pay rent, or all of the above while dealing with a whole host of other issues.

It’s equally tiring to see people on this sub bitch and moan about “doomerism” while clearly being privileged enough to be living a good life that many people can only dream of.

1

u/PixeltzOfSpook 2007 1d ago

Or, time just passes by.

2

u/geofox8 1d ago

Both? People change as they get older. Opinions they had as children won’t apply when they’re in their late twenties and beyond.

-1

u/Dramatic_Syllabub_98 1d ago

What, I stroke a nerve there?

3

u/geofox8 1d ago edited 1d ago

Saying tone-deaf, douchey things tends to provoke a negative response. Wild, I know.

Guess you’re one of those privileged knobs I was talking about, huh…?

0

u/Dramatic_Syllabub_98 1d ago

What, saying that generational subs tend to go crotchety old people mode? Life can suck, and it can suck hard. As someone who used to be suicidal and can still battle my depression I know that very, very well. Hell my brain loves to catastrophize if I give it a chance. I also am keenly aware of what can happen if I let myself wallow like some crotchety "there is nothing good left, all our good days are behind us" old fart. I do NOT want to go back to having to talk myself out of using an improv. Rope on a fire escape or testing if I could fatally OD on something.

Whatever bullshit life is throwing at you I'm genuinely sorry, but I don't have the privilege of allowing myself to roll over at it. I fight to see a light in that tunnel.

I don't get the luxury of not having to put the effort up and sink into the dark. But I guess you do, huh?

2

u/Economy-Sleep3117 3h ago

I guess your generation jumped the shark and knows how rough life can be already. I'm sorry! I personally found out In college when I was broke and became squidward like immediately upon graduation. Now I'm more like Patrick lol

Jokes on you I’m off the next two days

5

u/Fallen-Shadow-1214 1d ago

One should always strive to have SpongeBob’s limitless optimism and drive in the midst of exploitation.

2

u/Mesarthim1349 1d ago

Time for the daily posting of this image yet again

2

u/Wild_Stretch_2523 1d ago

As someone older, I can't recommend getting a job with 12 hour shifts enough. Having 4 days off a week is a game changed. It made me SO MUCH HAPPIER with life.

1

u/Temporary_Article375 1d ago

How do i find those

3

u/Wild_Stretch_2523 1d ago

Many hospital jobs are 12-hour-shifts. I'm a registered nurse, but many entry-level jobs (patient support, etc) offer the same schedule.

A lot of manufacturing jobs are 12s, as well.

A few days ago I worked this out. You grow up liking Spongebob because he's the most likeable and kid-friendly. Then you grow into an edgy teen or edgy young adult and like Squidward because he's narcissistic, self-aggrandizing, and doesn't want to be bothered with anything (most of us and reddit are here). Then you grow into a functioning adult that realizes Squidward is a major downer and Spongebob's relentless optimism and care for his community are much better traits.

1

u/itzLucario 2001 1d ago

Same with Benson from regular show

1

u/Wren_Slip 1d ago

"We" ok bro.

1

u/Hairy_Recognition_46 1d ago

Canada Day up here! 🇨🇦🥳🥳

1

u/Lumpy-Tone-4653 1d ago

I am hapoy you said "understand".

Because there is that shittu quote that goes like "as kids we are all like spongebob but as we grow up we become squidward" which is completely stupid. Squidward multiple times exagerates, acts like trash, acts immorall and irresponsibly ,as we grow up we understand asoects if squidward vut he is still a cartoon character and he is meant to be so exaggerated.

1

u/mikeramp72 1d ago

god i hate growing old

1

u/SyntheticSlime 1d ago

Childhood is loving SpongeBob. Adulthood is knowing Squidward.

1

u/1zeye 1d ago

It is Monday

I'm a weird morph of Spongebob and Squidward.

1

u/ShadowcreConvicnt 22h ago

This post only applied to workers

0

u/Helllothere1 1d ago

You mean self inflicted failure? Arent you self reporting here?

0

u/whoisbh 1d ago

He was always my favorite character

-6

u/BloomAndBreathe 1d ago

I'll never understand this mentality. Like I get it's supposed to say that we relate to Squidward because we realize everything sucks, but Squidward is just a miserable douche that has to bring other people down to make himself feel better.

If anything Sandy is the gold standard. She's responsible with all the science and shit but also knows how to cut loose and chill.

11

u/Effective-Avocado470 1d ago

Squidward is often just trying to enjoy some time to himself by playing clarinet, taking a nice bath, etc. or do his job, and some loud and annoying af neighbor/co-worker keeps harassing him. If anything SpongeBob is the dick here

-4

u/BloomAndBreathe 1d ago

Yeah I can see that side of it. And I wanted to say SpongeBob is no saint himself but I wasn't sure how to convey it

Anyway my main point was people that act like Squidward irl are hardly ever pleasant to be around, they're just jaded assholes. I hope that makes sense.

3

u/Dark_Wolf04 2004 1d ago

I would also be a jaded asshole if my neighbors constantly laughed out loud while I’m trying to sleep, trespassed on my property while I was in the bathroom, caused me bodily harm, completely destroyed my property and harassed me and the authorities do fuck all. And to top it off, on of those annoying neighbors is my co-worker, forcing me to endure his shit for the entire day

6

u/Kindly-Couple7638 1999 1d ago

Oh boy, buckle yourself when you learn more about politics.

1

u/BloomAndBreathe 1d ago

Politics wasn't my point. There's no denying the political climate is in the gutter though

2

u/I_hate_11 1d ago

No it should be Mr Krabs he’s a wealthy successful businessman

1

u/BloomAndBreathe 1d ago

I can agree with that

-5

u/00rgus 2006 1d ago

I'm 14 and this is deep ass post

8

u/Mojave_riot_328 2007 1d ago

everyone says squidward is the relatable one, but deep down we all know its plankton.

1

u/geofox8 1d ago

It’s almost as if you’re still a literal child and have yet to experience that being an adult sucks sometimes 🤷‍♂️
