My apologies and I’m sure I’ll get downvoted for this… but was this a Great Lakes ship or ocean going? Or, to not get crapped on further… did it happen in an ocean or on one of the Great Lakes? I know the GL can be extremely dangerous and unforgiving.

Hard to know where it is for sure. The Great lakes can have storms with 80mph plus winds and 20 foot swells so it could be there or the ocean or like the north sea

I live in Michigan so I am very aware of how crazy it gets. I live about a mile from Lake Saint Clair and am often on it every weekend. It isn’t Superior but sometimes that chop gets super nasty. If you aren’t on the right boat you are toast. Just this past week 4 people had to be rescued.
