Fuck. I forgot teenagers exist. Yeah, spend some time constantly looking up the stuff in the episodes. If you know what's going on in the world at the time the episode premiered you'll enjoy them even more. A lot of stuff happened irl like a week before the episodes aired, which made the episodes that much more funny.

The A Million Little Fibers episode seemed so weird until I learned the true story, it all clicked and is so much better with the context (I was too young to know/remember the real thing)

Gosh, Million Little Pieces (the book) came out almost 20 years ago. That is wild. The controversy was a pretty big deal at the time.

I was just thinking that. Like, South Park, at it’s core, has always been a satirical parody of the human race. So, when people don’t realize that their jokes often parodies of actual events, I’m like, “Why do you watch this show? Is it for the poop? Because, if that’s it, you’re not watching for the right reasons.” Of course, I know this is super gatekeeperery and part of what makes SP so amazing is how many different audiences is appeals to, so, shit, maybe I’m watching the wrong way.

That's going too far imo. The weekly satire stuff didn't start until well into the series. Please let's not forget the inception of the show was literally frosty the snowman and Santa clause murdering children and Jesus cutting off frosty's head. The first official episode is about an 8 year old getting an anal probe.
If you're watching South Park for the poop you're not watching it for the wrong reasons.

The show has levels, that’s for sure. I won’t argue that. I guess to me, even those early episodes were social commentary. Not necessarily about specific moments in culture, but overall observations of human nature.

Some things are much funnier when you don't understand the background or context, because they can seem like weird or abstract nonsense that someone somehow came up with. Personally I've seen a lot of memes and heard jokes that I thought were hilarious because I barely understood, but weren't as funny once I learned the backstory.
A lot of south park stories with without completely needing to understand the inspiration.

based on how detailed the guy’s face is I knew he was a real person, and on how specific the references where I just figured that’s similar to how BP apologized nonchalantly for one of the worst environmental crimes in recent times. I didn’t ever see their apology vid either, and it isn’t far off from what they parody tbh

You don't remember everything in the news about the oil spill because you were too young to care (ahh to be young and carefree again).
11 people died in the explosion and the entire Gulf of Mexico is covered in oil and this douche acts like dealing with the aftermath is too much and has the audacity to say "he just wants his life back" lmao. After that, that's when his apologies peaked and we got this gem of an episode. Even if you didn't follow the news in 2010 you heard about this because someone you knew bitched to you about having to cancel their yearly beach vacation due this asshole.

I love when people discover stuff like this so kudos to you! One of my biggest gripes with a review of every South Park episode I saw recently was how often the creator complained that he didn’t get what was being parodied in it when he could’ve dug around to find out.
Like, I love that South Park can be as dumb or clever as you want it to be; if you don’t get the joke, you can always look it up on a wiki and learn something new.

My favorite BP story is that BP they went around and met with affected communities in LA and AL, but had to stop the community meetings because of too many death threats. I don’t mean anonymous threats called in, but people would stand up in the meeting and tell the BP people to their faces that if they ever came back, they’d be shot dead in the street.

Same thing happened to me with the Maury povich episode. I had never heard of the show and thought there was no way it was really like that. A week ago I saw one of their clips on youtube and everything was so on point! Even saw a woman saying "whateva"

The one that got me was the same series, but The Lebron James Technique. I could tell they were referencing something, but I wasn't getting the joke. Then the show cuts to commercial and plays the Nike commercial with Lebron's "What was I supposed to do??" It all clicked, and I lost my shit. The show was so relevant that it was making fun of the commercial before I had a chance to see it. Then, the ad was still in rotation and came on during the episode! BRILLIANT!

My favourite real life spoof was the Best Friends Forever episode. I remember following the Terri Schiavo case in the news and the episode was released shortly after she sadly passed away. Her family and the justice system were not prepared for the situation she faced and the shame was aimed at just the right people by South Park.

One of the best things about South Park is that they do current topics of the day, and spoof it. It's a really good way of poking fun at serious subjects.
