My dad used to do this all the time when I still had enough energy to argue with him. I’d bring up a direct, recent quote of his (e.g. there’s no such thing as a legitimately hungry child) and he would either tell me I made it up or do the childish “Well your memory must be so good that you remember everything and I don’t remember anything.”

Funny enough, I rarely ever actually shared my explicit views about anything. He’d make an outlandish claim and I would say, “Have you considered this perspective or piece of evidence?” And he would subsequently melt down about how I was a stupid brainwashed liberal.

Yet it was me that destroyed the family, definitely not their sacrificing my grandfather’s life for the sake of doubling down in covid conspiracies, definitely not his adultery, definitely not him telling his children they’re idiots that are “going to get loaded on a train car” if he sensed anything but total fealty to trump.

I thank whatever gods may be every day for my family of filthy liberals.

My immediate family is made up of people who just ignore everything and don’t vote.

I’ve tried to convince them, but they just don’t care one bit.

It’s not ideal, but it’s better than some of the republican family stories I’ve seen and heard about.

My mom was like that. My aunt and her husband are enlightened centrists, which is a fancy way of saying "Libertarian, but kind of condescending about it." My grandparents are similar to my mom, but show signs of leaning right, like loathing Ocasio-Cortez without knowing why and displaying Confederate flags.

Then you get to my other aunt, and it all starts getting really bad with fundamental Christianity (but some weird kind where they celebrate Jewish holidays as well).

I have so often wished that there was just one other liberal in the family.

It's a woman with a foreign name. What more do you need to know?

Oh, trust me, I get that it's because she's a non-white woman with somewhat socialist ideas, but they chalk it down to her being too "angry and loud all the time."

I've softly called them out once or twice, and it just flies over their heads.

I love AOC, but Rep. Jasmine Crockett is my fav right now. She'll tear a mother fucker up! 😂

Oh, the Jewish cosplayers. Aren't they so precious.
I love seeing them blowing a shofar or wearing a tallit and kippah while talking about Jesus as the messiah.
I mean, Christianity's existence is among the oldest and largest examples of cultural appropriation. Why stop now?

At the end of the day we do all reserve that option. It’s not the most forward thinking one, but I was definitely like this too at one point. After the pandemic I moved to the Rockies, it’s an attitude I’ve seen fairly common over here.

Same. Absolutely same.

him telling his children they’re idiots that are “going to get loaded on a train car”

You ok? That sounds fucking horrible.

Your dad sounds like mine, minus all the political shit. Ha

It's sad to see a family torn apart and people dying for politics.

My friends and I used to argue about whether the Republican base actually believed the swill being marketed to them, and would go back and forth. "Well, they're now dying by the truckload from a vaccine that almost eliminates dying from it". "We have our answer".

In this context I agree with you, but dying for politics is a time honored tradition found the world over. Dying for rights, dying for liberties, dying for a better future. History is rife with all kinds of political movements, good and bad, most with death in them somewhere.

Are you me?

There's a solid possibility

I met a Canadian at my kid's Christian school wearing a Norther Confederate shirt that had the northern states from the war with the Confederate flag in the background.

It sounds like him and your dad would get along.

Your grandfather died from Covid?

u/suburbanpride North Carolina Jun 02 '24

That’s impossible. There were no COVID deaths, it was all a hoax.

A lot of people died from COVID.

Give him a kick in the balls and be done with him.

You can't reason with people like that. I've tried. Evidence is dismissed as fake news. Videos and sound clips are deemed to be deep fakes.

Once these folks go deep into their beliefs, it's best to just ignore them.

The media has done quite a number on relationships.

“Well your memory must be so good that you remember everything and I don’t remember anything.”

Boomers have an amazing capacity to spontaneously forget anything that makes them look bad. Dealing with this right now with my own parents.

I'm so grateful that my Fox News brainwashed parents actually took COVID seriously, got the vaccine, and were careful when going out in public.

In 2017, while traveling in Europe I met some Australian guys and we rolled together for a few weeks. One of them was a big Trump supporter. He said he didn't understand why I didn't like Trump, and I said "let's start with the Muslim ban." I explained that my dad is a Muslim immigrant, so a candidate who pitches "I'd have banned your dad" is not exactly selling themselves well to me.

Guy tells me that Trump never said that, he doesn't believe it, that's made up. I pull up a clip of Trump announcing it and the statement he posted to his official website. I can still recite the first line of that from memory. There is no room in his statement for any other interpretation. It is literally "a complete and total shutdown of Muslims entering the United States."

Guy looks at it all, pauses, then goes "well I'm sure he's got a good reason, that shouldn't be why you don't like him." And I paused, furrowed my brows and reiterated "he'd ban my dad, dude. I literally wouldn't exist."

I've seen that kind of "he didn't say that, but if he did, it's fine, but he didn't — but to be clear if he did it's fine" bullshit before, but it's always astounding to watch.

Son, you're hanging onto that resentment for dear life. Let it go young man.
