We tend to take compasses for granted these days, but they're important for navigating a straight line through obstacles like trees.

Even a compass only tells you what direction you're pointing, not if you've been crabwalking to the side while facing "straight ahead".

Exactly, use of a compass needs method and the use of a map as well if you don't want to get lost. You need to be able to know where you are on a map to start your journey. Unless you want to always go "south" for example. It's not so simple.
