That man had way too much faith in the integrity of that surface

766

u/Neither-Idea-9286 2d ago

And the integrity of the wheel bearings! That kind of speed can easily burn up and destroy regular long board wheel bearings. I’m guessing they are special high speed bearings.

u/bestest_at_grammar 2d ago

Did you see his helmet? I’m assuming he has the right set up

550

u/Emotional_Sell6550 2d ago

i'm no expert, but my understanding is that a helmet won't prevent you from flying off the top of a mountain.

221

u/SuperGameTheory 1d ago

No, but it will make you aerodynamically sound as you plummet to your death.

u/DIABLO258 1d ago

Expert here, a helmet won’t prevent you from flying off the top of a mountain. But the right helmet will make you look cool as fuck while you do.

17

u/Drum_Phil 1d ago

It would likely allow for an open casket funeral however.

19

u/ShahinGalandar 1d ago

you just have to turn the neck another 180 degrees and you're good to go

u/ImurderREALITY 1d ago

Yeah, that’s what the hand guards are for

3

u/DreamzOfRally 1d ago

You’re talking like you didn’t just this man do this. What about the fucking camera man?! He did the same shit but holding a camera.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/nam3_us3r 1d ago

Well that's why helmets need to have retractable wings.

15

u/bestest_at_grammar 2d ago

No shit

Didn't even have a propeller on it

u/Todaz 2d ago

I initially thought he had a Dark Vader helmet

27

u/invertedhorsecock 1d ago

This is false. Every skate bearing is roughly the same in performance the only real difference was when BEAR trucks was using 10mm axles in the late 00's and forced you to use proprietary 10mm bearings. And even then the rolling resistance was about the same as their 8mm ceramic and steel counterparts. Even with dirty unlubed bearings, a good 5 min run down a hill will usually chew through any gunk thats in em. Just lube em sometimes and gravity will do the rest

The main factor determining speed is wind resistance, that's why you see him hold his chest to his knee and the arms tucked behind his back. Less drag -> go faster -> more smiles -> more bugs in teeth -> more protein -> ankles stronk -> go faster etc...

As far as 'special bearings' often you'd see racers use cheap steel case mini logos for their superior side-to-side rigidity vs ceramics/bones Swiss. The added lateral stability keeps the wheels from vibrating and chattering while sliding and keeps your drifts consistent and smooth

Bearings are a marketing scheme. Zealous for life.

5

u/invertedhorsecock 1d ago

Give your money to someone who actually gives a fuck about skatboarders, and give your money to zealous

3

u/RollinBart 1d ago

For sure!

7

u/Otherwise_Spare_8598 1d ago edited 1d ago

Believe it or not, most of us downhill skaters ride on very basic bearings that don't cost all that much. There are certainly a variety of quality, but you don't have to spend much

4

u/WhitelabelDnB 1d ago

Zealous steels still the meta?

→ More replies (2)

15

u/yaboiiiuhhhh 2d ago

He probably has ceramics

→ More replies (5)

4

u/4Nwb1 1d ago

People doing downhill have a whole dedicated setup of course

11

u/MFbiFL 1d ago

I wonder if there’s a way to test bearings in similar circumstances with lower stakes. Nah, probably just bought some bearings having never gone downhill before and YOLO’d it. If only he consulted reddit beforehand to let him know what to worry about.

9

u/ChiggaOG 2d ago

I assume they’re regular bearings from Bones Bearings. I haven’t heard of longboarders needing to use special bearings for downhill runs like in this post.

4

u/RollinBart 1d ago

Probably regular Zealous bearings. I run them on all my boards.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Mr_Havok0315 1d ago

Ceramics. I’ve had them on like every board

41

u/MFbiFL 1d ago

It would be unheard of for someone to scout the route they’re going to ride ahead of time. Completely unthinkable to do a low speed run evaluating the road surface.

12

u/Gnascher 1d ago edited 1d ago

I'm sure the road was scouted first. Given the camera rig on the chase car, this wasn't a spur of the moment idea.

35

u/HeadPay32 2d ago

Surface has more integrity than some people

16

u/tankie_brainlet 2d ago

Do you want some fuckin tegridy? Don't you wish everyone had some God damn tegridy?

7

u/rawfish71 2d ago

Randy Marsh is that you?

→ More replies (3)

6

u/RollinBart 1d ago

Roads are frequently checked and skate spots don't turn into skate spots without them being good. This road has been scouted and filmed with a car, it takes a lot of runs before you decide to do such a thing.

6

u/Kitchen-Beginning-47 2d ago

If he fell would camera car right behind him be able to stop in time?

20

u/MFbiFL 1d ago

If he fell he’d be skating on skin, pretty sure a car with rubber tires and brakes can slow down faster than a meat puck.

2

u/Oglark 1d ago

You kids come up with the darnedest descriptions

33

u/realitythreek 2d ago

It’s funny you called out that sub. The most recent post looks like the same dude taking a spill.

11

u/71Gibson 1d ago

Definitely not the same dude if you’re talking about the guardrail guy. The guy here is a top skater from Italy. The guy who hit the guardrail should not have been skating that road given his form.

7

u/i_max2k2 2d ago

Dang I just noticed the irony.

4

u/JaviEspaguetti 2d ago

If its the same dude.....he definitely dead or vegetable

3

That definitely feels very bad.

24

u/DuckAHolics 2d ago

Longboard wheels are wider and softer. Pebbles normally don’t do shit.

I used to downhill longboard, was the most fun I ever had and every hill I drive on I imagine what it'd be like to skate. I wasn't good enough though, and quit before killing myself but after leaving large portions of my epidermis on the road.

13

u/Zapp_Brewnnigan 1d ago

Nothing like waking up stuck to your bed sheets. Ah, the memories.

7

u/Bimbo_Baggins1221 1d ago

Bringing back memories. I’m in the same boat, wasn’t the best, went to a few slide jams, probably topped out at like 40-45 miles per hour. Never made it to the life threatening level of downhill. But my god I’ll never forget pre-drifting or just gripping through a corner. Some of the best days of my life were left on the hill.

2

u/J-Dabbleyou 11h ago

Same. I haven’t really longboarded in years. Anytime I’m driving on a long slope country road with my girlfriend I’ll always say “damn this would be some good skating”

147

u/MaximilianOSRS 2d ago

Better scout that whole run for rocks first

79

u/Odd-Purpose-3148 2d ago

I'm certain they did. His adjustments toward the end and definitely on the hairpin say he has practiced the lines.

24

u/4DPeterPan 1d ago

Bruh you know they broomed that entire long ass road before trying this. Straight up janitor style.

11

u/Good_Mathematician_2 1d ago

Nah, our school janitor growing up didn't give two shits about keeping things clean. They had to be neat-freak OCD off the wall kinda clean to make sure it was good to ride

2

u/belizeanheat 1d ago

Oh yeah they're just talking about style of broom

Anyone know where this might be?

3

u/Nictrical 1d ago

I'm not sure, but it could be in France near the 'Observatoire de Haute Provence'. The quality is too bad to be sure, but those two white dots in the background could be the two observation domes.

2

u/ye_roustabouts 1d ago

It looks like California, north of San Fran, but that’s a wild guess

8

u/Talkurt 2d ago

Show me that hairpin at full speed and add a wing suit please. @redbull ;)

6

24

It sure looks like this skate is entirely too close to a large vehicle.

u/Gnascher 1d ago

They got a proper helmet (and gloves) for this and they clearly have the skills. Very cool to see.

3

u/stonkfrobinhood 2d ago

I'm not sure that those thin pants and sweater would do much for him if he fell, but I guess something is better than nothing.

2

Was thinking the same thing, how you concentrate on someone else while skating down yourself….

2

u/Bimbo_Baggins1221 1d ago

This is a car following them! You can see the shadow in the beginning. Pretty standard operation for this level of skateboarding. Also helps you get back up the hill!
