Imagining a sci-fi episode of some TV show where an alternate planet finds this infant and thinks it's a cute pet only to have it grow to 2,000 pound, hyper aggressive, shit spraying beast
E: I managed to underestimate their weight lol

Futurama Season 6, Episode 10. Fry nurtures an alien egg out of which hatches a monster.

And yet it will grow to be a 1000 pound, death-dealing, lake-ruling God

Uhm akshully, this is a pygmy hippo. They only grow to be 300lbs and aren't particularly dangerous. Baby hippos are way bigger than this.

Yes, and no. My father was a zoo veterinarian and once while trying to help capture an escaped pygmy hippo, I saw it chase a keeper who had to scramble up a tree. It really wanted to hurt him. With 9 inch tusks they are fearsome.

It’s actually not soap, but a natural secretion from the hippo’s skin! It looks soapy when it gets wet, but it’s just something their skin produces on its own to protect itself.

It’s not soap. It’s the hippo’s own fluid. It helps as protection from harmful solar rays.
Pygmy hippos secrete fluid to protect themselves from the sun. This white stuff is a result of that. It isn’t soap. You can literally see how it doesn’t bubble up like normal soap.

Because it is soap. Look at the ground after he washes it off, that’s soap.
Also, hippo sweat is clear and it doesn’t turn white like human sweat. After it comes out of the skin it turns red/pink/crimson.
Edit: i was wrong, apparently this is a pygmy hippopotamus

This was posted like a week ago and someone even linked to the article from the zoo this was taken at, and they said it wasn't soap.

You are referring to the hippopotamus. The one in the video is a pygmy hippopotamus. Very different animals. The pygmy is nocturnal and its skin is very easily dehydrated. It secretes a substance with a pinkish-white tint to combat this. That of the hippopotamus is darker.
Also I don’t know why the person washing it would just apply soap and not rub it in. It’s clearly just a rinse.

Aah thank you for the detailed explanation! Learned something new today! Could you make decent soap out of that though? It really looks like soap lol

Sorry, but why does a hippo need a bath?

u/VaultedRYNO 2d ago
because babies when kept in captivity can begin to stink alot and when they are young they need to be examined alot for medical stuff so keeping them clean is good practice.

u/Ok-Ratio-Spiral 2d ago
I'm guessing the wild babies don't smell much better
9
u/VaultedRYNO 2d ago
I dont imagine they do but yknow they have the whole outside to be stinky in. In an enclosure that smell def gets worse.

I'm pretty sure this is a pygmy hippo, not a standard "rising from the depths to eat your whole boat" type.

u/Shantomette 2d ago
Anyone else super surprised they are born so small? Like a horse is born and it’s 10 times that size. For a such a huge animal you’d think the offspring would be bigger.

I watched a Panda being born on Reddit recently and was so surprised at how tiny he was. Like the size of a newborn kitten.

My man should be using a loofah, not a sponge meant for dishes!
Although, that sponge might be more satisfying come to think of it.

u/shingaladaz 2d ago
Yeah. There’s nowt wrong with the cute post, it’s just not really relevant to the sub.

If scientists can make square melons, then surely they can make pigmy hippos! Get to work you useless scientists! *slams fist on table.

It is of utmost importance that we domesticate these things for pets.

Frenchies and English Bulldogs have this covered. They’re called “house hippos” for a reason

Hippos don't need to be cleaned. They can survive in dirty water 🤦🏻
13
u/VaultedRYNO 2d ago
But this is at a zoo and just because they can survive in dirty water doesnt mean its prebably best they keep their animals clean so that filth and disease cannot accumulate within the limited area.
1
u/Ill-Animator-4403 2d ago
It’s not even being cleaned. It’s being rinsed off. The white fluid is produced by the hippo in response.

It looks tiny even for a baby . Is it some different sub specie of hippo?
