One day you'll get a tap on the shoulder, and it'll be your turn. It happened to me.

If I were to guess, this is the air filling hole. Some are just open like that, and it does take a while for the air to rush out.

Strange or eerie places that you would normally just pass through/not spend much time in.

To me the aspect of liminal spaces I always latch onto are spaces that feel familiar somehow, even though you know you havent seen/been there before. Like something out of a dream you vaguely remember.

It kind of reminds me of the times in gym class as a little kid with a playground parachute.

This is the world between the worlds. The place your soul goes to when it is ready to incarnate again. We have all been here many times.

I was thinking ET where the govt has all of those plastic tubes all over the house.

Perhaps a horror movie left a scar?
In Wes Craven's New Nightmare there is a scene where the bad guy is like chasing/tormenting the little kid and the kid tries hiding under his sheets but it ends up turning into a 'tunnel' thing via some mind fuckery... it has been a looooong time since I have seen it honestly, its all a bit fuzzy sorry. I just remember there was a scene like this that freaked me out a bit at the time!

It looks like the big divider curtains they would hang in the gym to separate different classes

When I took gymnastics as a kid, there was this giant inflatable “mattress” that we could crawl around inside. This reminds me of that.

The teal color does something that triggers nostalgia for me. And it’s very liminal.

What is the string for

to hold its shape when fully inflated, rather than balooning out where it shouldnt

I hadn't really thought about that being an issue, that's pretty neat.

It's known as drop stitch fabric and is also used to make inflatable kayaks and paddle boards.
And it was originally pioneered by Goodyear in the 1950s to make inflatable airplanes.

Mustard has a really good video a out this plane. I wish they made them commercially, it looks like it could be a lot of fun at a reasonable price.

They are too unstable to be considered safe. It happens the same with parachutes, they can be seen as "inflatable" wings, but sometimes in the wrong conditions they tangle and deform. No other solution for parachuting but it is more practical to use solid skins in airplanes, also they work as fuel tanks

I assumed (wrongly, TIL) that it was plastic channels inside like a pool float.
Hey, why can't we have clear inflatable mattresses like the furniture in the 90s?

u/OrangeRadiohead 1d ago
The example shown is from an ultralight air mattress used for camping. They pack down very small and are lightweight. The plastic you refer to whilst tough is extremely heavy and cumbersome.

I had a dream I was stuck in a maze that looked liked this. The walls were breathing. Weird wispy hands would try to reach out to me through the walls if I stayed in one place too long. This feels weird.

Why do I hate this so fucking much? Now I have to be aware of this every time I use an air mattress 😭

u/kindaadulting87 1d ago
Right?! I feel really uncomfortable looking at this but I can't explain why 😂

u/OrangeRadiohead 1d ago
Not all use this method. Cheap mattresses most certainly don't. It's the type you find in a quality camping mattress.

Inflatable paddleboards have the same structure too. That’s how they keep their shape.

Inside a quality air mattress shown, the inside of a cheap air mattress would just have plastic welded coils, top and bottom.

I think this pic was taken right after the plug was taken out. It's slightly deflated judging from the webbing hanging down and the floor part being creased.

I don't know if it's just intex but air mattresses are fragile as hell it's just a gimmick

Intex ones are cheap, and generally you get what you pay for! I learned that lesson once, and when it inevitably fell apart, I replaced it with an upgrade.
Now my husband and I have a double-decker queen-size air mattress that we take with us when camping. We're in the back half of our thirties and want comfort when we sleep, so it's worth every bit of money, time, and space in the car. We bought a better air pump, too - USB rechargable and it lasts a long time between needing to be recharged, and it fills the mattress so much quicker too. We've been using the mattress for a decade now with no issues, and the air pump has been with us since at least 2018. We've got a whole system worked out by now: assemble tent, get mattress set up, toss some sheets on once the mattress is inflated, throw the pillows on from their separate bag, move in the rest of our stuff (backpack, snack bag, drinks), hang up some tent lights inside, and bam, home away from home. And the tent's roomy enough for several friends and dog(s), so it all comes together pretty quickly with our regular group as everyone already knows what to do.

Oh those mattresses are the best when camping! My parents had a queen air mattress that would keep you 2’ off the ground. My friends and I would always just use my one big tent, with my mattress taking up half the tent and the other have would be my 3-4 buddies sleeping on those little air matts that puff up like an inch. Felt like a king!
It’s been 9 years since I went camping last, hope to do some this year.

u/YnotZoidberg1077 1d ago
Yeah, ours is pretty tall! It's nice to be able to sit on it and not have to haul yourself up off the ground when you want to stand up - my knees aren't what they used to be, and my husband is 6'6" so hauling himself up off the ground is an undertaking at this point, lol. We love it! It cost as much as our tent, somewhere in the neighborhood of $100, but it's well worth every cent and more for how much use we've gotten out of it and how comfy it is. It's like sleeping on a cloud, and there's just something so nice and relaxing about sleeping in sheets on a comfy mattress after a long day outdoors.
I hope you get to do some camping too!!
