The sidewalk I was riding my bike on was littered with hundreds of Pokémon cards.

People steal them from stores looking for rare ones and toss all the common ones. Happened by my work a few times.

u/SuperIsBored 2d ago

I had a feeling they were stolen. Right behind me is actually a walmart. So this makes total sense.

u/AmandaExpress 2d ago

Yup! My work is near a Target. There's always a bunch of wrappers that are the dead giveaway.

u/weaselmaster 1d ago

Or maybe it’s a funeral ritual — when your friend dies you scatter his cards down the nearest county highway?

-7

u/TEPRoyal 1d ago

Why would someone litter their close one's belongings on the highway after they pass?

Spreading their ashes is one thing, throwing out a bunch of paper cards is sort of another.. imo

13

u/ElectricTaser 1d ago

Mmmm yes, but sometimes you just gotta go with the joke.

1

u/7ofeggs 1d ago

yeah i’d be pissed if someone littered in my memory tbh

u/JonnySnowflake 2d ago

So, what's rare these days? I haven't really thought about them since second grade

45

u/VanDenIzzle 2d ago

this Umbreon is one of the most sought after cards at the moment

20

u/FUTURE10S 2d ago

Okay, that card is real good. You don't even have to use the actual card, just put it on your bench.

-57

u/Rubcionnnnn 2d ago

tf is an umbreon

47

u/FrankBrayman 2d ago

Gen 2? Not new at all.

Evolve eevee at night

16

u/HataToryah 1d ago

A pokemon, I think that's pretty obvious.

14

u/dandroid126 1d ago

It came out in 1999.

u/Zezockary 1d ago

There is a pokemon rap parody where they kidnap the rapper's family to force him to finish the rap.

And another where ash has been in the hospital so there are a bunch of new made up pokemon.

3

u/colbymg 1d ago edited 1d ago

Original 150 was 3:08, so 1,025 would be 21:25
... or was Mew in the original? I don't recall...

40

u/JonnySnowflake 2d ago

I just checked. They're on gen nine and there are just over a thousand of them now

1000 is literally made out of gold coins

Edit: Just learned what the number sign does, not changing it

Edit: Just learned what the number sign does, not changing it

this made me laugh, thank you

15

u/blonderaider21 2d ago

That happened to me the other day. I was like guys I swear I didn’t mean to yell lol

2

u/Viend 1d ago

Number sign?

15

u/JDBCool 1d ago

Hashtag # <- that thing.

Because you still see stuff like #3849 as like a generic code for items.

Reddit just makes it into

YELLING

6

u/Lewis_1 1d ago

It's called a hash, it's only a hashtag if theres a hash + a tag like on twitter

12

u/T1NF01L 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's actually called pound. It has existed since before internet and social media. Originally written as ℔ meaning libra pondo (pound in weight) in ancient Roman times. Over time it became used to simply indicate a numerical value and became # or the number sign. It became hashtag when it was used on Twitter in 2009 to tag something and people started calling it a hashtag and then stopped calling it a number sign.

Originally # was a simplified way of writing ℔.

(#) has many names these days though. Pound sign, number sign, hash, hashtag, octothorpe, and probably a million more.

9

u/nous_nordiques 1d ago

Octothorpe

2

u/Cute_Celery_2202 1d ago

yaa and generally on most services that use markdown language (reddit, discord), "#" indicates header, "##" subheader, etc.

YOU WANT MICROTRANSACTIONS?!? I’LL MAKE THEM A DAMN POKÉMON OF MICROTRANSACTIONS!

18

u/MightyKrakyn 2d ago

Thousands of Pokémon with multiple variations. They can expand forever

-2

u/iampierremonteux 2d ago

There’s more than 151 if you count missingNo

15

u/iDontRagequit 2d ago

There’s an umbreon card from a set a few years ago that’s worth 800-1000 bucks, you can still find the packs in stores sometimes.

I pulled my copy back when they were only worth 350 😅

9

u/zerolimits0 2d ago

Pokeflation.

We call those "Geologists" here.

u/SingForMaya 2d ago

Mostly older packs, but some modern chase cards can be a few hundo if the condition is right.

I saw booster packs of Skyridge, Expedition, or Aquapolis series for $700 each or so. If you get special edition cards like the Poncho Pikachu (shiny charizard version), it’s $3-4000 or so. Or even better, you have the poncho Pikachu box still sealed, it’s 10kish

18

u/jiirani 2d ago

Couple of years back (I say a couple, but it was BW era, so must’ve been over a decade, lol) I found a bunch of cards on the street near my house. There was a holo crobat from one of the plasma sets and a secret rare shiny krookodile from dragons exalted - worth over £50 now if it wasn’t in shit condition.

I did also find a full art gladion around sun and moon time as well in the supermarket car park. I still have em all but they’re super beat up. I just think they’re interesting.

6

u/Snoo22566 2d ago

real assholes bring a scale so they can weigh them and pick the heaviest packs (whether to steal or buy depends on the person)

1

u/CAPTAINxKUDDLEZ 1d ago

I saw a car siting when I was doing grocery pick up opening and dumping them. Now that you say what you have they probably stole them, couldn’t believe someone would pay money to just sit there throwing them in the street for 20 minutes.

820

u/Lookkidsbigben_ 2d ago

So you found pokemon in the grass while adventuring? :D

281

u/SuperIsBored 2d ago

Holy shit I never thought about it like that

241

u/just-killme-rn 2d ago

Gotta catch ‘em all!

12

u/OtterishDreams 2d ago

its tough theres wind

222

u/QuillHasFavorites 2d ago

126

u/SuperIsBored 2d ago

For real, this would take at least an hour to clean up, and even more so once some city lawn mower service comes over and shreds it all

7

u/Newhollow 2d ago

They were trying to escape from the box locked inside......

132

u/Euphoric-Run-9968 2d ago

me personally, i collect the common ones just to have all the different Pokémon, not just the rare ones and i just find this a waste.

72

u/AloeSnazzy 2d ago

Pokémon seems way less fun when it’s high stakes gambling instead of finding cool looking attack pets

16

u/FUTURE10S 2d ago

I wonder if there's a format where you can only use Basic Pokemon. That'd seem like fun.

10

u/Mattpudzilla 1d ago

I believe there is. MTG players also have a pauper format, where only common cards are allowed. Far cheaper to play and much more fun for casual games.

1

u/Mountain_Ape 1d ago

In Pokemon, there is Basic and Basic. Basic fulfills the opening rule (You must set a Basic Pokemon as your active Pokemon before the game can begin). However, to fulfill that rule, you draw and have to put down this card this card and your opponent puts this card.

The other Basic is essentially "Basic but without a rule box." It would be nice for an official format where Pokemon with Rule Boxes are not allowed, but Magic is an exception in supporting cheap formats—other card games want to make money by players buying the biggest most beautiful busted cards available.

1

u/FUTURE10S 1d ago

No, I meant like actual Basic, as in no EX, no GX, no V, no VMAX, if it has any rule box, it's out.

1

u/Heavenlypigeon 1d ago

Im like this with baseball and hockey cards, I don't need a fancy Reverse Foil Super Holographic Xtreme I just want some default base set cards of the guys I watched growing up

1

u/ArrrSlashSubreddit 1d ago

I made a cape of copies I had more than 4 of, best use ever.

63

u/pasharadich 2d ago

Someone didn’t catch 'em all…

59

u/SuperIsBored 2d ago

Someone released 'em all

18

u/AnthonyRC627 2d ago

Team Rocket Blasts off again!

5

u/SuperIsBored 2d ago

Ah, they took all the Pikachus out of the box and threw away the rest!

3

u/AnthonyRC627 1d ago

Meowth! That’s right!

151

u/papabearshirokuma 2d ago

An angry parent threw away his son’s collection. Grab them all.

34

u/moviemerc 2d ago

Nah, someone stole them from a big box store and dumped all the crap.

9

u/porym 1d ago

I still don’t understand why they spread them all over the sidewalk on a random street instead of just throwing them in the trash

7

u/Suspicious-Post-5411 1d ago

Any thieves here to answer this?

1

u/papabearshirokuma 1d ago

Probably done in front of the kid.. “see them get lost”.. and was grounded at home, that is why never returned to try to get them back, or they were passing by to a very further destination.

37

u/PlagueHerbalist 2d ago

I’d be crouching all day long after them!

8

u/SuperIsBored 2d ago edited 2d ago

If I cared about Pokémon I probably would too, but I only had a phase about Pokémon when I was 9 lol.

8

u/SloppyJawSoftBottom 2d ago

I got into Magic the gathering because i found hundreds of Magic cards scattered for blocks down the alley behind my apartment.

10

u/VegasVator 2d ago

Surprisingly common sight in Los Angeles. Steal cards and ditch all the crap not worth anything, which is almost all the cards.

11

u/LiterallyJohnny 2d ago

I work at Walmart. At my store, Pokémon cards get stolen daily by people of all ages. Usually they open them in a specific aisle at the back of the store that cannot be seen from any of our cameras. I wonder when they’ll add a camera because they certainly know 😂

9

u/xenonxavior 2d ago

Also, the crew who laid that sidewalk were on crack

1

u/SuperIsBored 2d ago

There is a fire hydrant in the way.

3

u/Owobowos-Mowbius 1d ago

And it didn't magically pop up. There are plans for that that issue lmao

Looks like someone messed up and it's in the middle of nowhere so they said fuck it.

1

u/SuperIsBored 1d ago

Probably yeah

3

u/Junior-Ad-2207 2d ago

A wild pidget appeared

Did you catch em all?

I was thinking of this then went to the comments and saw a link, glad someone else thought of it

2

u/Doctorgumbal1 2d ago

Guess you better help with the “clean up” effort

1

u/SuperIsBored 2d ago

Unfortunately, I'm not interested in Pokémon anymore, lol.

2

u/anonymouse781 2d ago

Did you catch them all?

2

u/Ancient_System_7372 1d ago

I saw the same thing at my work. Behind the building I was working on, bad side of town. Ton of cards, a baby blanket, some tampons, ice pad, water bottle and weed packets. Pretty sad scene. My guess was a parent and kid or something was there. I looked up to see graffiti saying something like “you’ll be remembered” above it. I don’t know what to think of the whole thing but could also just happen to be a bunch of random stuff making a scene.

2

u/mrDuder1729 2d ago

Someone's girlfriend has had enough!

1

u/chefianf 2d ago

Or parents. I've seriously thought about chucking shit out at 60mph and laughing the whole time.

2

u/Ok-Experience-6674 1d ago

Hundreds????? I count 5

2

u/SuperIsBored 1d ago

Little hard to see, I know, but I promise there is at least over 100. There was also about a dozen behind me as well. Unfortunately, I can't post more than 1 photo, or I would've shown more.

All those dark and light spots in the grass are cards too

1

u/shockrush 2d ago

Reminds me of this Canadian PSA

how does it feel to live my dream </3

1

u/dandee93 2d ago

I'd be set for my nephew's birthday for years!

1

u/Skibur1 2d ago

I’ve seen two huge TV just tossed out on the side of the road in Hawaii. Not a single store within sight could explain how or why the TV was disbanded…

1

u/IandIreckon 2d ago

In Hawaii it costs money to dump some things, so they just found a place to dump it illegally, for no cost.

1

u/Cactor_ 2d ago

I saw this walking in front of my neighborhood. i assumed they were dumped from a school bus or something

1

u/ClitTickler21 2d ago

Did you catch em all

1

u/hayhayishzoe 2d ago

dude same i’ve been finding them on my walk with my dog everyday this week

1

u/SlovenianSocket 2d ago

Happened to me as well, but I actually picked them all up lol. A few shinys and reverse shinys but nothing really of value

1

u/ronweasleisourking 2d ago

Gotta catch em all!

1

u/Errentos 1d ago

There’s a story there and I’m not going to be the one to write it

1

u/SpartArticus 1d ago

Free cards

1

u/maringue 1d ago

I used to see the absolute weirdest stuff riding longer distances. My friends who ran cross country in high school had a locker full of wild stuff they found on the side of the road, like a 3 foot tall teenage mutant ninja turtle stuffie.

1

u/gnomedeplumage 1d ago

Clearly a great battle took place here.

1

u/nien_nuts 1d ago

Same thing happened when I was a kid but with Bakugan. That was a great day

1

u/Juicebox_Ted 1d ago

My immediate thought was a family driving through here and a parent is so mad at their kid nd threw their collection of cards out the window 😅

1

u/Tough_Hour_2505 1d ago

Catch them all

1

u/renyxia 1d ago

I've been finding the same, but not as many. Seems that every day theres about 1pk of fresh cards along the highway on my walk to work

1

u/SaveSumBees 1d ago

Definitely stolen, had some kids walk into the zumiez I managed a while back acting very suspect, saw them huddled by my trashcan and went to see what they were up to, only for them to toss a bunch of shit in there and run, I think I counted maybe 10 different packs of cards in the trash with maybe 3 cards total. Crazy what collecting Pokémon cards has turned into

1

u/__Becquerel 1d ago

Streamer was here...

1

u/threadedinsert 1d ago

I bet you just left them and didn’t clean it up

1

u/SuperIsBored 1d ago

Yes I did, that would take hours.

1

u/timeforgoomy 1d ago

Those things can be worth a lot though 😭

1

u/Reddit-JustSkimmedIt 1d ago

Thieves steal the packs, open them and keep the valuable cards, then dump the rest. There’s nothing but common cards there.

0

u/timeforgoomy 1d ago

That's true but there's also people who get cars stolen or cars broken into and people just dump that stuff too. Crackheads don't know or care about Pokémon cards.

1

u/SleepyChan 1d ago

Man, I work a few hundred feet from a Walmart. The smoke shed in my work's parking lot is always surrounded by Pokémon cards and the ripped up boxes. The shed is at the edge of the lot and up against the woods, so you just see Pokémon cards littering the ground between the trees while having a smoke. The facilities guys are always asking us of we've "seen the Pokémon bandits" in action yet. Got an encampment up in the woods too so we've assumed they're stealing the packs as a group looking for rares.

1

u/Ryl0225 1d ago

This is crazy. Just saw a bunch on the road side

1

u/MangaMaven 1d ago

Someone was bullied here
