The master undoing Missy’s characterisation was such a waste tbh

A plot point which ran literally from Rose until hell bent and kind of until the doctor falls and the longest running plot arc The show ever had that defined multiple doctors being written off in a cheap single episode Thing is far far worse

Ah yeah, I think I made myself forget that.

Tbh him using the final episode of a series to have the big reveal him confirming a shitty fan theory from the 70’s is also dogwater

It kind of gets worse once you watch the second episode...

I had a discussion about this in another subreddit a few months ago. If you include expanded media you can make Spy Master make much more sense with an audio-only incarnation after Missy.

Light spoilers for audio dramas. The incarnation directly after Missy is called the Lumiat. Who is just wholesale trying to do good like the Doctor. She enviably gets offed by early days Missy who implies that the regeneration is going to hurt a lot.

Theory/Headcannon to make it work. I made the case that the Spy Master is the Master falling into a deep depression and bout of self-loathing brought on by not being able to do good like the Doctor. Driven over the edge by the revelation he could never be like the Doctor because isn't even Gallifraian. So by the time 13 runs into him he's just full on back to bad habits.

He just wants to be equal to the Doctor, so finding out that the Doctor is the reason he even exists in the first place probably hurt like fuck.

And that deep down he wants his friend back, but said friend is so done with him at this point and wants nothing more than for him to drop dead. :)

Exactly, which I think dovetails nicely into him trying to body-jack 13 at the end.

He's such a fucked up but interesting character, and his obsession with the Doctor scares me.

it just shows how different a person can be throughout different incarnations

i maintain the belief that SpyMaster came before Missy.

Is there anything to suggest this Master wasn't before Missy? I still feel like they could do that and it would explain what happened after Missy was killed at the end of season 10. Saved by the Toymaker.

They haven't confimred when missy came into it. She could be thr last one

I mean, when would spymaster be then? Because Simms master becomes missy in fall of the doctor

5

u/Twinborn01 May 11 '24

We dont simms turn knto missy

4

u/hellogoodbyegoodbye May 11 '24

They have a convo about it in fall of the doctor after they kill each other

It's speculative, with Simms clearly not knowing and Missy not remembering. Hell, the point of the master's method of execution is that it's 100% actually fatal hence her inability to just regenerate before going to help the doctor.

The BBC and Big Finish have confirmed that SpyMaster comes after Missy.

I don't believe Sacha's master has been put into the timeline anywhere yet.

I'm generally of the belief that Sacha came after Simm, or somewhat close. It'd explain why he's so angry about everything all the time knowing that Missy is in his future, that he's going to change at some point.

Until we get a confirmation that he comes after Missy, I'm holding onto that.

It has been confirmed via multiple sources.

He wouldn't know if Missy was in his future, time travellers can't retain memories involving their future selves (maybe not even including Smith's run in with the curator). It's been a running theme of the multi-doctor episodes.
