The difference in quality between this and the next episode is probably one of the largest quality gaps between two episodes in the entire series

I think that explains why they released two episodes at once. The second one feels pretty solid. The first, if it was the only episode for people to watch, probably wouldn't get people sold on watching Doctor Who if they weren't already big fans who were willing to wait and see how further episodes turned out.

Though they're both standalone, in one sense it does feel truly like a two-part 'premiere', with the first episode explaining the basics, and the second setting the stage for the series arc.

Oh, right. So, is the second episode actually good? I'm not going to hold my breath

Hmmm, what if I felt the problems were deeper than the uncanny talking babies? I just found doc and his companion very bland and prescriptively wholesome. Sort of like a pair of young primary school teachers.

I think the biggest quality gap is The Impossible Planet/Satan's Pit being followed by Love & Monsters. Series 2 was wild.
