Especially if you live in a cigarette factory

u/jello1982 May 17 '24

I was a computer tech many years ago. So many PCs would come it with burned out power supplies, processors, etc from smoker homes with clogged fans. Sticky smelly balls of dust in them. So gross.

156

u/Madting55 May 17 '24

I must admit that is my least favourite part about my job. Dealing with a laptop console or pc that is yellow, sticky and has a smell you cannot get rid of with anything. Any hair or dust gets absolutely glued to it!

I always think like, if this is what your laptop looks like after a few years of smoking in the same room. What the fuck does your lungs look like after decades of direct contact with that shit?

71

u/InstantHeadache May 17 '24

If you put smoker lungs and Xbox series x next to each other they sort of look the same

1

u/MikeBoviall1991 May 18 '24

Smokers lungs look nothing like this

10

u/TheAtlas97 May 18 '24

Yeah, too many electronic components

2

u/Enderswolf May 29 '24

They go to do an autopsy and the next thing you hear is “It looks like a damn Xbox Series X in there!”

5

u/InstantHeadache May 18 '24

Humor varies and is not for everyone

2

u/DXGL1 May 29 '24

They look more like they've been in a meat smoker then overdone on the BBQ grill?

24

u/verticalburtvert May 17 '24

I worked in a pawn shop fixing these things. This is nothing compared to some of the roach hotel smoking lounges I've seen. Hadn't thought of that nonsense in years until this post came across my screen. Vomit.

4

u/unrejectedskittle May 18 '24

Its always the 1 story motels

2

u/flyinb11 May 23 '24

Worked somewhere that we rented out the original Xbox. Describing it as a roach motel could not be more accurate.

1

u/verticalburtvert May 23 '24

Sorry you had to go through that experience too, man.

2

u/MikeBoviall1991 May 18 '24

You guys are failing to realize that it's not straight smoke residue that is in there. It mixes with humidity and dust.

2

u/Due-Garage4146 May 18 '24

Exactly. I’m in my 40s and wish some of my family would quit smoking. I don’t smoke and the younger generation of my family don’t but it’s the older ones that do. My great uncle smoked a lot, fingers were all yellow. He just passed away last year at 94 and if he didn’t smoke at least he would’ve lived a little longer. My grandparents are still alive, but they still smoke. Wish they would quit.

2

u/whoops9310 May 18 '24

Fortunately your lungs have the ability to clean themselves u like your Xbox lol

2

u/psychoticrat_ May 18 '24

if this is what your laptop looks like after a few years of smoking in the same room. What the fuck does your lungs look like after decades of direct contact with that shit?

This is what I try to tell my boyfriend. Who constantly smokes in the house.

2

u/NotMeatOk May 19 '24

Some people just are addicted

1

u/psychoticrat_ May 19 '24

It's so sad.

1

u/I_Killith_I May 17 '24

That's why rubbing alcohol and vinegar are your friends to clean at least the outside when you notice this. I use to work at a business that put video games in bars when they still had smoking and, this was the best, fastest, and easiest way to remove the tobacco tar residue off our arcade machines and computers. We also used bounce as filters on our cold air intake fans, and that helped a ton. Then when they banned smoking, we didn't have to do that anymore.

1

u/Due_Airline2880 May 17 '24

The difference is your Series X will not clean itself, but your lungs do. If they didn't you'de be dead after a few years of smoking, not decades.

1

u/Big_Boss_Lives May 17 '24

Gosh guys why? What people do to get their PC’s like that? I’ve never clean any console and alnof them lasted their time and some are still going. But i send my PC for cleaning and maintenance every 6 months.

2

u/NotMeatOk May 19 '24

Well, if you keep it up off the ground, have no pets, short hair, then you have nothing to worry about as long as you don't smoke.

1

u/TOX1C-R4G3 May 18 '24

Yea dude that's so nasty! I don't think most people realize how bad and gross everything around you gets when you smoke! It's NOT just a little bit of pee yellow and brown on your walls. It's WAY worse. I have unfortunately lived my whole life with most everyone around me smoking, i have seen how bad it gets from light smokers to heavy smokers. People are always surprised when their house and car get all nasty. 🚗 When it comes to your car...  You blow all that smoke out straight at your windshield, over and over again, on the side of your windshield that rarely gets cleaned. After a while it starts to get foggy or "hazey" and hard to see out of. When you finally try to clean it, it just smears and streaks. You end up having to really clean the heck out of it, just to do it all over again in a couple months. 🏠🏠When it comes to your house.. People definitely don't think about the fact that there is already a thin layer of dust on everything, then you smoke and it builds a layer of Nicotine on top of all that dust.   And all the residue on your walls from smoking is NOT DRY! It's wet and sticky, especially if its hot and/or humid out. Which obviously makes more dust stick to it aswell! This dramatically increases the buildup of "cobwebs". And if it's really humid out and you're even a little more than a light smoker, then it will start dripping down the walls,🤢🤢🤢 especially in the bathrooms and kitchens!! 🤮🤮  I've seen this sooooooo many times in my 40 years of life, and it still just disgusts the crud outta me!!

1

u/RobLarsen2 May 18 '24

😀 Well said

1

u/NotMeatOk May 19 '24

Man, this is actually an important reminder. I just got a pc and need to move it off the floor. I mean it just means i would have to clean it every 6 months instead of annually

1

u/DXGL1 May 29 '24

I bet tar soaks into plastics commonly used for consumer electronics like ABS and polycarbonate.

14

u/eNomineZerum May 17 '24

Think Apple for a bit said it was a health concern their techs weren't equipped to deal with and that they would deny warranty.

3

u/Psychof1st77 May 22 '24

So, you can imagine how pissed off I was, when I got my original PlayStation back from lending it to my oldest brother who smoked at the time?

In weeks of borrowing it, he had the PS1 shell feeling like the walls at my chain smoking grandma's house. Sticky and stinky.

I don't lend my games or consoles to anyone, anymore.

6

u/satans_trainee May 17 '24

Try baby vomit. Not recommending.

9

u/rocket_beer May 17 '24

But what about man-baby roommate vomit?

2

u/bitterbalhoofd May 17 '24

Both my babies vomited less vile than what is insides this guy's Xbox.

2

u/Miniteshi May 18 '24

I used to vape heavily in an enclosed room with zero ventilation. I'd never experienced a Mac Mini overheating and then being so slippery on the inside. It was an eye opener that's for sure.

1

u/UsingButAlive24 May 19 '24

We're you held captive or something? In a basement? At least they gave you a vape and a Mac.

2

u/Miniteshi May 19 '24

Lol it was a shoe cupboard which was about 1m x 2m so super tiny but I managed to make it into a little space for me to chill without the rest of the family so in a way it was perfect but yeah I could have just kept the door open.

Now I've realised the error of my ways and keep everything dust free as best I can (and moisture free).

2

u/Needs_ADD_Meds May 17 '24

You just unlocked a past trauma, I completely forgot about that nasty sticky dust.

Want to talk about disgusting, try cleaning an electric air cleaner in a VFW bingo hall. 🤮

1

u/TruFire420- May 17 '24

Genuinely is an annoying issue for me, I live in California and smoke concentrates regularly. I literally have to clean my fans out every three months because dust sticks so much worse in my situation. Resorted to cleaning them with cotton swabs and iso. Thank god for iso. Annoys the hell out of me that so many people that smoke don’t clean their electronics regularly. Don’t get me started with nicotine smokers that I can’t stand. The smell is so foul I don’t understand how people can smoke tobacco indoors tbh but if I don’t smell weed anymore probably the same thing happens to them lol. Edit: grammar

And now you working at Burgerking 😂😂

1

u/MikeBoviall1991 May 18 '24

Being a smoker and cleaning my systems regularly, I can tell you this doesn't happen to any of my shit. I have consoles and PCs alike. Has nothing to do with smoking sir. Has everything to do with not maintaining your stuff regularly

1

u/mrbaker83 May 19 '24

Whats the proper way to clean it? I hear compressed air is not a good option to use.

1

u/Ok_West7572 May 20 '24

Does smoking bud do this also or just cigs?

1

u/jello1982 May 20 '24

I'm not sure. My old roommate used to smoke a tonne of weed in the garage and it didn't turn the walls yellow like cigs do. These computers would be yellow on the outside. Dead/clogged cooling fans, messed up DVD drives, etc. They were obviously chain smoking while using the PC.

1

u/SuspiciousChair7654 May 20 '24

I knew someone that sold security systems to fast food places. And after 1 month, it was clogged with grease. I feel for those who work in those environments that doesnt have proper ventilation.

181

u/windol1 May 17 '24

Yeah, I really wish people would stop suggesting to clean out consoles as some sort of broad advice. The majority of people DO NOT have to clean their consoles out for most of their life.

If you need to clean your console out, you need to take a step back and seriously consider the hygiene of your room and how well ventilated it is because, if it's kept clean and/or well ventilated then this shit won't happen.

23

u/Bluedemonfox May 17 '24

Yeah my pc might have a little dust inside at the bottom and on the fans but it's mostly clean. I also use the pc most of the time so if the fans are doing their job barely any dust settles on the actual circuitry.

I haven't cleaned my pc for years at a time and when i do clean it it's nothing like this. But then one time i had my smoker brother use my pc for about 3 months when i was abroad and when i came back i found the inside was full of dust! Way more than i ever had in years of use ...

1

u/Embarrassed_Simple70 May 17 '24

This is good to hear. Makes me feel like I’m slacking. Don’t smoke and like to think my area is fairly well maintained. I do have dogs though and I know my TV stand can get dusty some. Makes me freak out when I see these pictures. Not even sure how to access parts of my console shown in this picture to clean it out

5

u/warcry May 17 '24

I agree. A year ago I saw a similar post on here. I went to the trouble of opening my Xbox and it was as clean as a whistle.

4

u/LoopDoGG79 May 17 '24

If you're forced to clean your console once a year, the issue is the room it's living in

3

u/austinwm1 May 17 '24

Not necessarily I keep my shit pretty clean and still have to dust my ceiling fan every other month because to much dust get stuck in it. Some places just have more dust in the air. Things like living space size number of occupants pets and environment can cure all kind of things to be in the air.

10

u/RisingDeadMan0 May 17 '24

Yeah the xbox one x just needs re-pasting. Which is a pain. Never done it before. But have take it apart to clean and change the SSD.

But the cleaning/re-pasting, not so sure about.

8

u/Wolf_sipping_tea May 17 '24

One x is very easy to take apart. I have more trouble putting the dang case top back on than anything else lol

0

u/RisingDeadMan0 May 17 '24

Yeah had to find a separate video for that bit.

My issue is re-pasting, never done it before. Plus need to clean and then re-paste. And it's a lot of smaller bits too rather then one big CPU like a desktop build would be.

Need some time and stuff and I should do it. Gets much louder then it should, and be back to a clean, quiet console.

And then await the series x pro or 2TB version...

3

u/Wolf_sipping_tea May 17 '24

It doesn't have a lot small parts like you think. its all modular. You just gotta take out a lot of screws holding the inner case to the bottom of the black outer case. The fat xbox one has the old way of being put together which is more complicated than any one s or one x console is.

7

u/Hayden247 May 17 '24

Well, eventually consoles do need a clean. Like my PS3 definitely needed one after a decade and doing it a bit sooner than 10 years is probably more ideal but yearly cleans if it isn't sucking up floor dust or cigarette smoke aren't needed. That can be a little more ideal for PCs but only kinda, more like the mesh filters and fans that could use a clean rather than taking everything apart which for consoles you gotta do for a proper clean.

1

u/Spirited_Bass_9744 May 18 '24

My cousin complained about his PS3 cutting off..Opened it up..Cat hair and cigarette smoke caked in the whole ventilation area including the fan..It was definitely a fire hazard..I dont know how it turned on..In the end the laser was the only thing that needed to be replaced..

3

u/Budget-Ocelots May 17 '24

This. My old PC for 6 years barely had any dust when I opened it up to part out the components.

7

u/jkrizzle May 17 '24

Thats rather presumptuous, what if you have animals? No matter the hygiene, if you have pets, hair’s getting in your shit. I’d agree that the average consumer does not need to take a device apart, but for longevity of electronics, you should definitely use some canned-air or something to clean your fans.

The OP, however, is definitely not average; this is just disgusting and I hope they clean their house a bit better after this post

1

u/MathGorilla May 17 '24

Yeah I agree with you. I keep my place clean and I don't smoke. (I have some people that come over that do, but I doubt that makes much of a difference) But I do have a really fluffy cat. And I clean my PS5 out at least every 7 months

2

u/BostonGuy245 May 17 '24

I popped open my PS5 two months ago to install an internal M2 SSD. I bought the PS5 in late 2021 (I think September if we want to be exact), so I had owned it for just over 2.5 years at that point.

I was shocked how clean it was inside. A tiny bit of dust, but not even remotely close to concerning.

For context, I live alone in a small condo with one small dog (who doesn’t shed), so that probably helps.

1

u/Mista-Monkey May 17 '24

You sound like a germaphobe. My house is big old dusty as hell and i have 3 dogs. My console is definitely gonna need a clean soon.

1

u/NOMADxJOKER May 17 '24

You're upset because people are suggesting people clean their consoles? If it doesn't apply to you, simply be quiet and move along. Over time dust collects up on anything no matter how much you keep your room clean, best to have this advice now than later.

1

u/Alexmich321 May 18 '24

I have a brand new place. Like you could legit eat off my toilet bowl that’s how clean my place is. No smoking at all and my series X which I game on had a decent ammount of dust in it after a year and a half of playing, FWIW i work 50hrs a week and game at night but nothing crazy. I have noticed that if you leave the setting on for instant power up and leave the HDD turned on that the fan randomly powers on and spins. How I especially noticed this is because I recently had to open my console to install a fan accelerator which just adds 50% additional fan speed to whatever the console is demanding. Anyhow now you can hear the fan so I started noticing randomly when it was quiet in the house I would hear the series x fan come on and start to spin for idk maybe a min or 2 then go back to off.

1

u/flyinb11 May 23 '24

You may want to make sure your air filters are being changed in your furnace/HVAC system. I keep those settings on and have never had a large amount of dust in my consoles or PC. I change my furnace filters monthly.

1

u/X_Vaped_Ape_X May 23 '24

My house gets deep cleaned every month. So i dont need to clean my consoles as much.

My laptop needs to be taken apart every 3-4 months and the thermal paste changed because it dries out.

I had to clean and repaste my PS4 Pro and PS3 once a year. (The repasting was the biggest issue) You will need to do the same with your series x. Normal thermal paste isn't going to last under the high temps the PS4 pro, and xbsx runs at.

That's why sony went with liquid metal for the PS5. Microsoft is idiotic for not doing the same with the xbsx.

1

u/Piotr-Rasputin May 17 '24

Exactly. My gaming area is a NO GO zone for pets and food or smoke

0

u/Top_Original_411 May 17 '24

That's not necessarily true because I sweep and mop everyday and I still pick up a small amount of stuff everyday. Them small particles getting sucked in everyday for over a year adds up fast. No matter how clean your house is there will always still be small bits around the house. Especially if u got pets, keep your doors open, air conditioner in your window. Saying a dirty computer means a dirty house is just not true

-1

u/GamerOnABudgetYT May 17 '24 edited May 17 '24

I do agree with you tbh. However I would say that it is the best advise you can give people to just clean there console once a year. Maybe every 6 months if you play regularly.

  • mainly because I see it like servicing a car. It is bound to get dust even if your room is clean and tidy 24/7. Especially if you have pets too.

Not like much time or effort is required to clean these consoles either (and they are out of warranty) takes at most like 45 mins to fully clean out a PS5 / Series X.

The same people downvoting are the same delusional people who will question in a few years why there console is loud or overheating, despite them having a clean room / house / setup.

87

u/DarthLigMauI May 17 '24

I’ve been on pc for a year, gave my Xbox to little brother. Says it keeps turning off an overheating on which is weird cuz I never had an issue with and it ran great. Get it from him and turn it on and this thing sounds like a Boeing on take off just idling at home. After opening it up this is what I was greeted with, don’t know how he did it but I’d imagine it has to do with him being a huge pot head.

128

u/b1rdganggg May 17 '24

"My brother" ya okay this "brother" needs to stop smoking.

13

u/windol1 May 17 '24

Yeah, something tells me a shit load of this was from OP time using it, but keeps trying to blame the brother who, didn't cause the majority of this, but definitely added to it.

Bets on OP being a weed smoker, rather than the brother, although I'd be confident in guessing they both smoke.

7

u/rocketbunny77 May 17 '24

How is it clearly from smoking? I honestly can't tell

12

u/Kermit-Batman May 17 '24

Unsure if pot is different... been a long while. I was a heavy smoker though, I would have electronics look a bit like the cleaner side of this picture. It's a sticky type of dust, very hard to clean off.

I still can't picture how bad of a place op's brother must have if this is the result of one year. Wild!

26

u/altcastle May 17 '24

We’ve seen it in older consoles and PCs. It just… does that. Smoking is really freaking gross.

8

u/Aggressive_Leg_6800 May 17 '24

Wouldn't smoke make it turn that orangey-yellowy smoke tar colour that cigarette or weed smoke stain everything with?

Honestly with how this looks, I thought maybe it is from too much pet hair being sucked through the console... Which kind of worried me because I've got 5 furry critters. Or 6 if you include the wife.

I guess I should probably take a peek inside my console regardless and give it a dustin'

3

u/MyRapNameWouldBeKirk May 17 '24

I have a ragdoll cat that seems to love nothing more than shedding his hair absolutely everywhere. I never thought it might be clogging up my consoles but will definitely have a look now. Thank you friend

1

u/AirportIntrepid6521 May 17 '24

the smoking leaves a tacky yellow substance behind.. it collects the dust and no matter how hard the fan blows the shit is glued there .

3

u/rocketbunny77 May 17 '24

Okay if I look for a longer time I guess I can tell that the dust is kinda stringy looking. I guess that's it right?

2

u/KrtekJim May 17 '24

This isn't from smoking. I'm an ex-smoker who is old enough to remember the "everyone smokes indoors whenever they want" days, I know what I'm talking about. This has neither the colour nor the residue that you'd expect from cigarette smoke damage. This is just dust.

1

u/AshenCraterBoreSm0ke May 17 '24

It's from cannabis smoke and probably the lack of an air purifier in the room. Cannabis smoke doesn't produce the same sticky yellow residue in electronics like cigarettes do.

2

u/mike41062 May 17 '24

It's more likely vaping. I've heard that's even worse than smoking for a PC/ an electronics internals..

3

u/AnimalEyes May 18 '24

I don't see how it could be worse than actual smoke

1

u/mike41062 May 18 '24

Yeah I wouldn't have thought it would make much of a difference but there's a tech guy on YouTube who talked about it ("Linus tech tips" or something- dudes got millions of followers and is a true expert). Said vaping is worse for it- that he knows heavy smokers who sit at their PC all day, and it isn't good for the PC- but he let a buddy who vapes borrow a tower for a month, and it was completely covered in a tacky, sticky, light yellow coating. He showed it too and it was crazy.

I guess cigarettes are more of a dry smoke, and vaping produces more moisture and they have a lot of sugars and stuff like glycerin in the liquids too.

1

u/WillyGVtube May 18 '24

used to visit a friends house back in school, his parents smoked and switched to vaping later, while smoking smells bad and does stain stuff over time (they smoked outside, atleast when i was there they did), id pretty much just smell some like cigs when leaving

after they started vaping the bad smells were gone but id have this sticky feeling all over after leaving their house, probably they way vapes are liquid that gets heated that makes the build up worse and stick-yer faster, while smokes is more just burning solids

1

u/DXGL1 May 29 '24

It's because vape juice is full of substances like glycerine and propylene glycol which when they settle on surfaces attract moisture out of the air.

-7

u/SirKhrome May 17 '24

This can happen from weed?

19

u/kpt1010 May 17 '24

Ofc , it’s still smoking.

7

u/r0bdawg11 May 17 '24

I’m 36 and this question brings back memories of all of the skater / stoners in 8th grade saying “there’s no proof that pot causes lung damage or is bad at all like cigarettes”. Lol. No offense.

0

u/SirKhrome May 17 '24

No I don't smoke and everyone around me claims there's nothing wrong with it and it has so many positive qualities about it

1

u/InstantHeadache May 17 '24

Clean weed isnt as bad as chemical infused cigarettes but smoke is smoke whatsoever

6

u/[deleted] May 17 '24

How'd you open it?

4

u/904Funk May 17 '24

this is what im wondering, not like that backside just pops off

2

u/Teknicsrx7 May 17 '24

There’s 2 screws under stickers, then you just pry a bit on the bottom corner and the back just pops off

1

u/PhilxBefore May 23 '24

This usually voids any warranty you may have so proceed with care.

1

u/DXGL1 May 29 '24

Magnuson Moss Warranty Act would say otherwise, unless they can prove you damaged the console by opening it. Of course warranties don't have to cover damage from harsh environments the machine wasn't designed for either.

-3

u/Eaches88 May 17 '24

How do people still not know how to Google stuff in this day and age? If you don't know how to do something, you Google it or YouTube it done. Simple, easy, common sense

-2

u/Eaches88 May 17 '24

By removing the back sticker and and unscrew 1 screw behind sticker and then a small black sticker that had another screw under it you need to have a t8 screwdriver to get the back off Xbox series x it's that easy and for y'all asking how do you open it? It's common sense. Go look it up online. Dumb dumb. There's YouTube videos and Google posts everywhere about how to open your console. It's two screws on the back, one in the middle behind sticker one towards the bottom behind the black sticker just unscrew take off back an then clean

3

u/americanadvocate702 May 17 '24

Any recommendations for a cleaning vid tutorial?

2

u/DarthLigMauI May 17 '24

Uh not really? I just took the back off and hit it with an airduster after gently brushing the heatsync

27

u/Profoundsoup May 17 '24

Same can happen with weed. Yall mf'ers smoking indoors without any air purification are insane.

5

u/KingTwiggNL May 17 '24

Did it for years, never had any problems with the console

8

u/Crazydutchman80 May 17 '24

People who smoke nowadays are insane FTFY

3

u/Next_Impression3901 May 17 '24

I'm not proud to say you are right. Knowing that I will die from it and that I have to quit. Still get another pack every week. I think insanity might just be the right word

0

u/Eaches88 May 17 '24

You're going to die either way we all do....

1

u/Anavorn May 17 '24

It's not 1980 anymore grandpa, smoking weed isn't vilified like it used to be

1

u/DXGL1 May 29 '24

It's still smoking and smoking indoors still is bad for everything and everyone in the house.

1

u/PhilinLeshed May 17 '24

Blow the vape smoke away from the TV/Console not while ur facing it

1

u/DirtyD8632 May 17 '24

Don’t need air purification just need to be cleaner.

0

u/Profoundsoup May 17 '24

Absolutely not true. Those particles circulate around your house for a long while. Its equivalent to smoking then getting second hand smoke. Its pretty much double damage.

2

u/DirtyD8632 May 18 '24

Yea, no that’s just an excuse. Keep a clean house and there is no problem. I am a collector and have never had this problem with any of my systems, laptops or PC’s. I can open up a decade old system and there will be minimal dust in it if any.

1

u/RPGreg2600 May 19 '24

Most people who smoke pot might smoke a bowl or two in a day, that's much much less dust than a cigarette smoker will generate.

1

u/DXGL1 May 29 '24

It's not so much the dust as it is the sticky components of the smoke that condense on surfaces and attract dust and damaging moisture. The smoke from smoldering plants isn't just dry solid particulates but als tar-like substances.

1

u/DXGL1 May 29 '24

Isn't smoking indoors a great eat to kill air filters too, because they get overloaded with sticky contaminants?

2

u/americanadvocate702 May 17 '24

This is 3 months in urban desert dwelling 🥱

1

u/Quality_Street_1 May 17 '24

I came here to say Drywall factory

1

u/DXGL1 May 29 '24

Probably would be more a pile at the bottom of the console instead of a fuzzy mat on the heatsink.

1

I've been beginning to worry bout the state of my Series X... But now I'm downright petrified...! (It now sits on my desk which, albeit is close to a window that's usually open; but... It's usually open because that's where I smoke my cigarettes. And God forbid I should be drunk as well, because then I don't even give a damn if the smoke gets sucked DIRECTLY into the poor guy.)

So the question is: How the hell do you clean a Series X? You gotta open it, n shit?

Any links? 🤔
