This generation has been underwhelming Discussion

I bought a Series X at launch, and can’t think of a single game that has impressed me this gen. I’m a big Halo fan, and Halo Infinite felt like a letdown. I’m a Forza fan, and Forza Motorsport felt like a massive disappointment. I was exited for Starfield, but was underwhelmed after playing it.

It just feels like we’ve had no heavy hitters this gen, even 3rd party AAA games have been average at best. I guess the only hope I have left is with Gears 6, but aside from that, Microsoft needs to get their act together and start releasing some new games. It feels like games are taking way too long to make these days, we used to get bangers every year in the 360 gen. Even the Xbox One had more compelling games than what we have now

As someone who has played all these franchises on PS, I don't agree that Sony has done a good job of carrying their momentum into this generation, either. If you only care about first party (or exclusive) third person single player action adventure games then you have more options on the PS right now.

However, more than half of the games you listed have had disappointing entries in their series so far, and Sony is struggling with the cost of these versus the revenue they make so they have slowed way down. Several also had major performance issues, tons of weird bugs, etc.

It has very much been an underwhelming generation from both the Xbox and PS perspective.

Put them all under third person action games is really disingenuous. They may have similar camera positions but they don't play remotely similarly. God of Wars combat on max difficulty is so fucking satisfying, Returnal is a shooter and a roguelite, Spider-Man is definitely nothing like either of those and Horizon is open world, which I guess Spider-Man also is in a way but none of these are the same. You may as well put Halo, Sea of Thieves and Grounded as "first person shooter" and say they're all the same, they aren't. All these games are different.

Meanwhile Halo launched with no content, a huge desync issue that still persists, a campaign without co-op despite promises that would never happen again that barely even follows the previous games.

I own every console and PC, Sony killed it compared to MS. I wish it weren't true but it is.

I'm not sure why people get so defensive about this. The games play different but they are all third person action adventure games. Is there something wrong with that? You can have multiple good games that play differently in the same bucket of games. That wasn't my actual critique.

I also wasn't comparing these to any other game, so not sure why you felt the need to do that. These series have had disappointing sequels. Whether Sony has done better than Xbox is immaterial, they should have been doing way better than they have. By that metric, it has been an underwhelming generation for Sony, too.

To put it differently, a 2/10 is better than a 1/10 but that doesn't make it good.

Well I said they were the ones making single player experiences and you didn't touch on that at all, you said something unrelated about pushing the gen forward. So yeah it seems like you aren't in this convo in good faith.

Ratchet & Clank, Returnal, SM2 and FF7 Rebirth as they are would not be possible on the previous generation, meanwhile MS committed to supporting the Xbone way too long.

That's what this whole thread is about.....

And I did touch on, I said if that's what you're looking for then you have more options on PS.

But I don't agree that any of the games you mentioned have made this generation not underwhelming. Regardless of a few graphical features and loading times, none of the games you mentioned feel like games that couldn't work on the previous gen consoles. Even Rift Apart has been shown to be reasonably possible on last gen with a few minor concessions.
