"Marked as rough" is not a phrase. This is not a joke.

I used rough as a synonym for hard and then cut down extra wording for the joke, if written all the way it would go

“they marked hulk movies down on a list as hard to make due to contracts, character rights, cgi, and box office risk.

Sorry if it’s wrong, I’ll try to use better grammar next time I post here. I still like how it turned out though.

I get your logic but for this joke to have worked "marked as rough" needs to be a phrase people use. Otherwise you're just forcing the punchline.

Off the top of my head you could have rephrased it to something like

"I named my dog after the hulk carl"

"You named him Bruce Banner?

"No, I named him Bark Ruffalo"

"BARK carl"
