How do I get my power armor back? Question

Post image

So super mutants came and raided sanctuary (they aren't too bright) and Trashcan Carla decided to hijack my power armor.

I'd hate to kill her, because then I need to buy a new power armor frame. Is there a way to get her our of my armor?

With followers you can ask them to get out of it, but I'm about to merc this chick just on principle.

Leave it, it's better this way. Trashcan Carla is now a walking trashcan.

....wut?

u/TheQuadBlazer 22d ago

Yep. Her and a couple other traders are in a file at the institute as informants.

u/Scarlet_k1nk 22d ago

Just figured it out myself yesterday and I’m still debating if it’s worth a missile up each of their asses if it means I miss out on picking out good building materials and bullets every other day.

Fuck the armor seller. I’m killing him first. He’s a bitch, his wares are bad, and his hairline is shit. I just needed a reason to kill him and now I have it.

241

u/TheQuadBlazer 22d ago

If you open a weapon store and a general store in sanctuary, you won't ever need her again.

I'm still kind of at the beginning of a new playthrough on survival. And I'm thinking one day I'm just going to follow her out of town and nuke her.

u/Scarlet_k1nk 22d ago

Same here, I’m just level 45 and just got to the story point where I was (purposefully) banished from the institute (made sure to kill everyone inside just for the exp, because fuckem. That’s why) but with the next gen updates I have a backlog of enclave power armor (currently rocking the X-02 devils armor with red paint for the agility bonus and style)

So I’m no shitter at the game. I’ve got a long way to go.

46

u/hootsie 22d ago

Lol I'm level 45 and just examined Kellog's brain… Danse is waiting for me at Cambridge.. Railroad? What’s that? Did make sure to give a Deacon a little kiss as I entered Goodneighbor and whisper in his ear “I know it’s you”.

14

u/BreadBoxin Atom Cats 21d ago

Lmao we pretty much played the same way. I just started doing the railroad stuff at level 50 after beating Kellog a few nights ago and then beating the mechanist. Haven't met up with the BOS yet.

13

u/hootsie 21d ago

Having played through multiple times, I still have to justify not going after Shaun ASAP. This time around I’m just acting like I don’t have any leads and am just trying to establish a means of survival for the long run, imagining it’s going to take a long time for me to find him.

u/Ichangedmyname4774 21d ago

lol my ass level 73 over here finally just killed Kellogg

Level 56 here just got ballistic weave from the railroad and they can get fucked now. I'm catching up on the minutemen stuff. And my son is dying at The institute fuck that guy.

I have started to see stuff about opening up stores but how does this work? Do I need a DLC or is part of the base game?

19

u/DMC831 22d ago

It's the Local Leader perk, ya need 6 Charisma to unlock it. First rank will allow you to connect your settlements together so they share resources (you pick a settler to be the Provisioner and then they go back and forth), and the second rank allows you to build shops and workbenches.

No shit!? Now I’m glad I killed her.

In this play through I choose the “give me all your caps” persuasion check dialogue option when I first met her thinking it was a joke or something funny. Nope, it was a straight up robbery attempt which I failed so she refused to barter with me from then on out. Sick of having this useless NPC take up space I waited for her to move out and dropped a mine on the bridge in front of her. It was beautiful. The Brahmin fell into the water so the current swept it downstream out of sight, but Carla landed on the rocks directly below so now every time I walk in or out of Sanctuary I pan down, look through the slats and say “Hi, Carla!”

Ya it’s a little demented.

To be fair, the file doesn’t declare them as knowledgeable accomplices, and judging by how the institute looks down on people on the surface, I’ve always assumed they just shared intel with people who paid them, not necessarily knowing they were stooges of the boogeymen of the commonwealth.

If you have the sneak / thief perk up high enough and sneak up behind her then you should be able to steal / remove the fusion core forcing her out of it.

Ive seen it done on many a brotherhood soldier. Never tried it myself though

They also get killed constantly after dropping down from the vertibirds. You can find their corpses and scribes corpses too. Free loot.

62

u/Majestic_Wrongdoer38 21d ago

Yes but a frame is so much better

47

u/Exportedorca 21d ago

I have like 10-15 sets of power armor but like 5 frames and the frames are hard to find

22

u/RiskyAlpha 21d ago

Really? I’m level 40 and I’ve got probably 8 frames? Only 2 have complete sets of armor. I wish I could find parts to fill them out.

43

u/Shmack_u 21d ago

Theres a merchant in Diamond city that sells power armor frames for 5000 caps

22

u/sunny_6killer 21d ago

I think the Assultron in Goodneighbor does as well.

11

u/doit4thegump 21d ago

There are alot of abandoned armor frames scattered around the Commonwealth, too. You'll find some in military checkpoints, caravans on the side of the road, on barges that were clearly shipping military equipment, and some hidden away in hard to find areas. It is cool trying to collect them all.

There's like... 20ish out in the wild you can just pick up and walk away with. I had a good time hunting them all down. Some relic suits out there as well.

Also killing all the dickhead Enclave soldiers in the three locations gives you fancy pieces.

Steal the other two suits from the Prydwn in the mustering bay where you originally got yours. If you save then sneak / enter when no one's looking you get to walk out with it wothout anyone noticing or caring. You can also buy a full frame and T-60 suit from the weapons vendor per day. I'd just sell him a shit ton of purified water to equal out the exchange

The atom cats garage is the easiest fastest way to pick up a frame and full set of T-60 per day. They also sell random other parts that you can cobble together on other frames. You can also steal rowdys suit when she's looking the other way, she doesn't notice either.

I ended up with 60 suits and displayed em on spectacle island in a 6 storey display like a total pale moron that's never touched grass. I think it's awesome.

On my last play through , I had plenty of armor , but 0 frames.

On my current play through I have like 4 empty frames and no armor to put on them.. I think it’s bc on this play through I’ve tried harder to shoot fusion cores to eject enemies from their suit.

Be cautious though it can still be considered owned by them which will make it “stealing” every time you put it on. Which could potentially turn your settlers or companions against you.

u/Seanytoobad 22d ago

While we're on the subject, if you snipe or otherwise shoot the power core there is a big explosion and the wearer exits. Pretty cool way to get frames off raiders and such.

22

u/no_hot_ashes 21d ago

This guy fallout 4's. Cant count how many times I stole the raider PA frame from the dunwich borers raiders

18

u/GKBilian 21d ago

It's so stupid that those raider frames are still considered stolen, though. Like everything my character owns was stolen from a dead raider.

2

u/Seanytoobad 21d ago

Dang, I never noticed that. Does someone get pissed at you or something?

2

u/21stCenturyGW 21d ago

I put a fusion core into a stolen frame just to walk it to a different location in the settlement, then took the core out. Codsworth did not like it at all.

16

u/Neil-erio 22d ago

Does she remains stuck in power armor and die from hunger ?

14

u/UrethralExplorer 22d ago

No, in game it disables the armor and it opens up and the occupant gets out.

9

u/Dann_745 NCR 22d ago

Yeah, as the other person said, she won't, power armor in the game works differently than in the show. If you don't have a core, you can just walk (the speed you walk in if you press caps lock) and can't use vats. But you don't get stuck, you can always exit and enter at your leisure.

3

u/ArisePhoenix Children of Atom 21d ago

It's also how the NCR Power Armor from NV works somehow they're able to just hold up the insanely heavy Power Armor with the tech ripped out

2

u/darkelfbear Gary? 21d ago

In the show though, his Squire I thought did something to lock him in it, before he took the core.

2

Pickpocket the fusion core

174

u/Nlawrence55 22d ago

The other day I was playing with Piper as my companion and she jumped in my power armor without a fusion core. It was functioning and everything. The fusion core wasn't even visible in the slot either. I did manually ask her to get in the armor without the core but I just thought it was unusual still. Is this common?

131

u/meadoworfeed 22d ago

I think that companions don't need a power core to use PA whereas other NPCs can only use powered ones. Need someone else to confirm, though.

42

u/Illumanacho69 22d ago

Yes, but they never use them up 100%, they drain to just 1%z So if you want to deck out your settlement with all power armor users, bring power cores down to 1% and use those on the settlers

45

u/Nlawrence55 22d ago

If I get on tonight I'll test this out and get back with you. If I don't get on tonight however there's a 85% chance that I forget about all this and we never figure the answer out. Just letting ya know lol.

11

u/meadoworfeed 22d ago

Hahaha fair. I'll be on sometime this week and will test if you don't!

11

u/Blahaj_IK Enclave 22d ago

From my own testing during my Brotherhood run (first FO4 too at that time), this seems to be true. I learnt this because I at first was super stingy about my power cores, handing them over to Piper so I wouldn't use them up while carrying stuff on my power armor

But she started using them when I told her to get in the power armor. And I was not having that, so I took them all from her. To my surprise she never got off, and kept sprinting like she had one. What's Piper's stength stat, again?

4

u/Dry_Value_ 21d ago

Reminds me of how in Skyrim your companion just needs a single arrow to infinitely use hightier arrows, iirc they'll shoot regular arrows if they don't have any in their inventory.

2

u/adjavang 21d ago

Just to confirm, yes, you can instruct your companions to use power armour without fusion cores. I basically live in power armour in all my playthroughs so when I see a frame in the wild I loot the fusion core if it has one and then tell my companion to enter the power armour so I can transport it back to sanctuary for my collection.

2

u/meadoworfeed 21d ago

Thanks so much for the assist!

25

u/mister3gg 22d ago

Yup. Your companions don't need a fusion core to use armor. I usually use them to haul my PA back to base whenever I forget to pack enough cores during a raid

They usually suck at fighting in them though, sometimes end up with all parts destroyed after getting home

3

u/Nlawrence55 22d ago

Oh yeah we went through like one assignment for Rhys and she was already missing half the PA.

8

u/crozone Welcome Home 22d ago

Companions can use power armor without a core? So I can just leave Piper in the armor and have robot waifu kill all the raiders for me?

10

u/SilverbackIdiot 22d ago

Correct. I’ll use companions to walk the power armor without using cores, then tell them to get out so I can hop in for a dungeon clearing.

6

u/Nlawrence55 22d ago

Holy shit you just changed my entire gameplay

9

u/SilverbackIdiot 22d ago

While we’re at it are you familiar with the companion carry weight glitch?

If you’re using a standard transfer screen they each have a unique limit. “_____ cannot carry any more.” when you hit it.

But if you drop it on the ground, or even better load up a container and then tell them to “get ” (or “inspect _” for a container) then they have infinite carry weight. 🫡

6

u/crozone Welcome Home 22d ago

No way.

Dogmeat is going to be carrying so much random junk. I'm sorry boy but daddy needs you to carry another 7 sets of raider armor.

u/Secret_shopper95 22d ago

That’s the neat part, you don’t!

Stop leaving fusion cores in your power armor

271

u/Efficient_Working539 22d ago

I had a gunner commander steal one of my coreless suits off of a rooftop in Sanctuary, a rooftop that had no access except for stairs that I had to rebuild myself if I wanted to get up there. Before you tell me to not leave my cores in, let assure that I do not leave cores in. I have one used core that I keeping using until it dies and the game autoswaps another. Whenever I get a new suit, I take out the fresh core that is in it and replace it with my working core. When I leave my suits for any reason, I take out that working core. I leave no suits with cores anywhere. I have done it this way since I discovered very early on the annoyance of having 50+ partially used fusion cores in my inventory. I follow this process religiously.

Anyone who has a fusion core can steal your armor, not just wandering traders or settlers.

77

u/JameelWallace Atom Cats 22d ago

How the hell did he get up there?!?! Oh yeah he just took the stairs.

52

u/Efficient_Working539 22d ago

No, there were no stairs. As I said, there was no roof access. At that time, I had to rebuild stairs to the roof myself every single time I wanted access to it, and then I scrapped the stairs when I was done.

It's just like finding a brahmin or a settler on your rooftops, they literally will spawn there on fast-traveling in. That's what the gunner commander did, he spawned on my rooftop and took my Nuka Cola power armor. I lost the frame because of it, had to go buy another one to put my Nuka Cola pieces on.

9

u/FrankSinatraCockRock 22d ago

yeah they're not getting it.

I have beta waved deathclaws in sanctuary that frequent the roof top treehouse bar to chill at night. How did they get up there when the doorway is too small for them? They make a road block for everyone else trying to drink, and eventually they just twitch and phase through.

It's like they took companion tracking( which is fine for companions) and made it apply to everyone.

u/Ricky_Rollin 22d ago

So is there no way to prevent your armor from being stolen?

32

u/Efficient_Working539 22d ago

There is, yes. I store my power armor in an empty, interior settlement with no resource production.

10

u/Normal_Aardvark7823 22d ago

Could store PA on the roof of the red rocket or the roof of the drive-in because those roofs don’t have nav-map so AI won’t walk on them (unless you build floors on the roof).

23

u/OKFlaminGoOKBye 22d ago

I currently have 22 sets lining the street in Sanctuary Hills. Every single one has a full power core. The only time I’ve ever seen anyone use them was against raiders, and they only took 2 between all of the armors and settlers.

Battle ended and they immediately baled, leaving them in all the wrong places.

3

24

u/datdudedru69 22d ago

It IS raider armor, so it's basically trash.

18

u/Ubergoober166 22d ago

Either take the fusion core or just let her have it. There are a shit load of power armor frames and much better armor pieces than what she stole from you.

13

u/Klutzy-Slat-665 22d ago

Just get out and ALWAYS remove the Fusion Core.

Never leave a powered suit alone, get attacked randomly and anyone will jump in it in a panic and never get out.

Also yes, for those wondering, she and other world travelling merchants are institute spies, and you randomly gain settlers that are secret synth spies. I'd be ok if they were open about it in some form of dialogue, but they are almost always a spy.

Also, while they never drop parts, the terminal mentioned "Watchers" are the crows, they are early synth cameras to spy on the local settlements, including Vault 111, Sanctuary, The Castle, Airport, and Diamond City. The crows aren't real and Ronnie Shaw (IIRC) is the one person that makes mention of "we killed a few of those institute crow things", as well as the head of the division in the institute mentions them as well, by the name "Watchers".

8

u/beans8414 Atom Cats 22d ago

I tried pickpocketing the power core, she ended up attacking me, then she got shot and killed by the settlers, since then I always locked all my power armors away in a room with no door. so I have to go into build mode and move the wall every time I need to go in there. If you’re on PC, open the console with the tilde key, click on Carla, then put in:

CallFunction "Actor.SwitchToPowerArmor" None

She should get out of the armor after that

3

u/Robo_Husky314 22d ago

You’re not supposed to leave the core in the armor

3

u/Illumanacho69 22d ago

Big piece of advice, don’t leave fusion cores in your armor. This advice is brought to you by experience.

That being said, do a quick save, shoot the core out as a sneak attack, hopefully she survives the explosion, and the armor is yours again.

u/WinSeparate3518 22d ago

Go to Bunker hill and wait there until she arrives, she will get out of the armor to trade. However, it might take a while for her to get there, I know it did for me

u/Specialist-Star-4406 22d ago

Kill her

2

u/InsertKleverNameHere 21d ago

See thats why I eliminated her BEFORE this happened. Well thats not really why...depending on how far OP is in the game, there is valid reason to eliminate her imo

Pickpocket fusion core. She'll step out

2

u/Ad_Astra90 Republic of Dave 22d ago

Pickpocket the fusion core I assume

2

u/Nova_496 22d ago

You don't. Welcome to Fallout 4! 😁

2

u/Ancient_Prize9077 22d ago

If you’re going for better power armor, and if you can level up a bit first to increase your odds, there is a full set of t 51 armor on a military barge real close to croup manor. You’re gonna want some heavy equipment to deal with some big enemies tho. And lock-picking skills

u/[deleted] 22d ago

Shoot out her power core

2

u/truthteller5 22d ago

I think you can PickPocket the Fusion Cell out of the armor which will force her to eject from it.

2

u/[deleted] 22d ago

You don’t. It belongs to trash can now…

2

u/[deleted] 22d ago

You don't. It's hers now.

But good news! You can go pick up a brand spanking new set of X01 in the shipping containers behind the Natl Guard Training Yard.

2

u/hrokrin 22d ago

She needs it more than you do. The roads pretty long from here.

2

u/Pheo1386 22d ago

Pickpocket the fusion core

2

u/SecurityLongjumping1 22d ago

That’s the neat part… you don’t

2

u/GhillieRecon469 22d ago

Sneak behind them and pull the core out

2

u/obi-wanravioli 22d ago

I always make sure to take the fusion cores out so this doesnt happen

2

u/fadlr Legion 22d ago

Never leave a power core on a empty power armor, these npcs think that what's ours are theirs too

2

u/Contra_89 22d ago

You just gotta talk to them and it’ll give you the option to ask her to get out of the power armor. If it doesn’t work the first time, end the conversation then talk to them again.

2

u/Appropriate-Macaron5 21d ago

Pickpocket the fusion core. She will just get out. Also, don’t leave any cores in them and they won’t get stolen.

u/dratine911 21d ago

Just shot the fusion core, its supose to her get out of the power armor

2

u/confusedbystupidity 21d ago

Must be new to fall out... just steal the power core...

2

u/batwork61 21d ago

Power Armor is for hording, not using. She joined your collection.

2

u/Peachy_Goddess 21d ago

If you travel to Bunker Hill, she will be one of the vendors there, and the suit will appear behind her

2

u/Skinflint_ 21d ago

Pickpocket the fusion core, she'll be ejected. Add it back in, get in, never leave a fusion core in unoccupied power armor.

2

u/Dirk1935 21d ago

Just to add to other’s comments about NPCs stealing your stuff…

If you have weapons on those craftable display boards on the walls and your settlement gets attacked, your settlers will take the weapon and it’ll take you forever to find it to get it back. I was able to find my Grognak Axe but still have not found which one of those turds have the Silver Shroud Machine Gun.

Before you leave your armor take the fusion cores out

2

u/otfXvibez 21d ago

Pickpocket the fusion core and she will get out.

2

u/foxtrot95_rb 21d ago

Never leave the power core in the suit. The npcs use it like they own it 🤣

2

u/Vscokiller Tunnel Snakes 21d ago

That's the neat part, you don't

2

u/Canadian__Ninja Brotherhood 22d ago

You can't.

Learn your lesson about leaving cores in power armour and it will stop happening.

4

u/Houndall 22d ago

Let her keep it.

Pick any direction and start walking and you'll find a new frame in 5 minutes.

2

u/donpuglisi 22d ago

That's the neat part.

You don't

1

u/BigfootIssReal Disciples 22d ago

steal or destroy fusion core

1

u/theluvlesstoast For the Brotherhood 22d ago

If your sneak isn't high effort to steal the core wait till she's a bit away from the settlement and shot the cow once to break it then immediately holster your weapon to stop her from attacking. I did this to Duke on a fresh survival run right outside vault 111 for early T60

3

u/Raaazzle Republic of Dave 22d ago

What did the poor cow do to anyone?

1

u/SpaceGangsta 22d ago

This is why my compound is on Spectacle island and I have nothing but robots there for defense.

Time to pull out the Kellogg pistol and blow her head off

1

u/gjyfghhg Enclave 22d ago

I think you can shoot the fusion core and it will explode and then the wearer will get out of the armor automatically iirc

u/tsarscream join. DIE! join. DIE! 22d ago

1

u/SpongeyTwinkie 22d ago

You can try stealing the fusion core.
