Prospective 2024 Duke vs Not Duke Decisions Megathread

Already starting to see these posts for grad students so I'm going to go ahead and post this before regular decisions drop.

To cut down on the posts of people posting their individual situations, please utilize this thread to solicit opinions on what school you should attend based on your situation. Congrats to everyone who has to even think about posting here, you've essentially won college admissions for having the option between Duke and another good school.

What did you wish to knew or did differently in your first or second year at Duke?

I’m thinking in particularly responses from third and fourth year students but any undergraduate would be fine. What did you wish you knew or did differently in your first or second year at Duke? Were there things you were told (eg, by friends, peers, or advisors) that you weren’t convinced of or didn’t follow, but later realized it would have been better if you did follow their advice?

Should I buy class textbooks before the semester starts?

I plan on taking classes like chemistry 110 and psychology 101 this upcoming semester which have links to textbooks attached in Dukehub. Should I purchase these textbooks now when I can find them for cheap online or wait to see if I will use them once classes start in fall?

Longlegs....

This is a very weird post but I'm a student enrolled in the Master's MENG AI program and am currently staying at the Belmont.

I love horror movies, and more so, Nicolas Cage.

As such, I'm really looking forward to Longlegs, and would love to find someone to watch it with.

So, if you're as much of a Cage Maniac, hmu!

Laptop Recommendation

I have heard that for engineering majors having a windows laptop is essential cus there is some stuff you cannot do on Mac. Is this just a myth or actually true? Also, if MacBook Pro works fine then should I get that or some windows laptop (please suggest the exact laptop models which yall think work best for ECE, any price range is acceptable)

Chem 101DL

Hey, I am an incoming freshman and I’ll be taking Chem 101DL in the fall sem. I have a few questions regarding that. Firstly, how does the class which shows two professors as instructors (Charles Cox and Jie Liu) work? Will both of them teach everyone or will the students be divided among them? And who among them makes tests/grades the tests. Cus the other class with Prof. Anna Martinez is a single teacher class. How do the two classes compare?

Hi guys I’m an international student moving to Durham soon. I was wondering if there are certain carriers that students choose more often because of affordability or performance. Would be great help if you could suggest any!

Marketplace Coffee Hunt

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hi there! I have been desperately searching for about a year now. I NEED to know what coffee and milk/creamer options the Marketplace offers. You see, I am a high school student who, last year, enrolled in a summer program in which I stayed on the East Campus for 9 days (best 9 days of my life). The coffee I there was also the best I’ve had in my entire life. I just need to have a similar option. Can anyone help me in providing the brands of milk and milk alternatives they offer? I would also like to know the kind of coffee that was served from one of those dispenser things. Any help is appreciated!

I’ve attached a picture of me and my friends having breakfast, just for funsies :)

Roommate/Accommodation search

Hi, I would be moving to Durham,NC near Duke University and am looking for accommodation near the university or a potential roommate with whom I could share a room starting from August (1st of August preferably). Would prefer accommodation which might be within walking distance to the university. I am originally from India and can speak English, Hindi and Telugu fluently. I am also looking at a few possible apartments and you could join me as a roommate if you too are looking for accommodation.

If you have any spare room available or are in the need of a roommate please feel free to reach out to me. I consider myself to be responsible, friendly individual. If you have any leads or suggestions it would be great if you could let me know. Thank you all for the help.

Duke Speech and Debate Alums

Hi! I'm a rising senior at the NCSSM Durham campus who is president of our speech and debate team. Our team is looking to expand and increase accessibility of our program for more students but we are struggling in terms of coaching. At the moment, we only have one coach who is there solely for paperwork purposes. This means we direly need coaches who have experience in speech and debate and will be able to mentor our students. If you are a speech and debate alum who is willing to mentor our students please reach out to me! We are willing to make compromises on availability, we just need a support system!

Is it possible to take one whole semester for an internship (co-op) as an international student?

Hi! as stated in the above I was wondering if I could do as stated haha, hoping to take one sem for internship (co-op) at duke and what that process looks like? I’m hoping to both gain some experience while cutting down some of my school costs haha.

I’m a computer science undergrad and I was also looking at compsci 791 Internship https://cs.duke.edu/courses/internship but the website doesn’t give as much information about it as i’d hope.

Is there a maximum/minimum internship duration for this module? Do I still pay tuition fees for this period?

What to do on a Friday night?

I (22F) just moved to Durham from Michigan State University because I got a job at a research facility on campus. My boyfriend (22M) will arrive in Durham tomorrow night, which I am excited about, but I realized that I do not know the area at all, and I don’t know what people do for fun around here. Any suggestions of what to do for fun are very welcome!

Switching from Trinity to Pratt

Hello everyone, I’m about to be a first year at Duke with my intended major being biology. I’m going to meet with my advisor in early July to talk to them about this problem but I’m wanting to switch from biology to either electrical or biomedical engineering in Pratt. How easy or hard would this be, especially since I haven’t started my first fall term yet?
