Hoping with a new front office and coach and owners, we can make a splash even at 6. It's some point, if you're going to win this league, you're gonna have to get lucky outside of a top three or four pick. I just hope we're looking overseas, we're looking everywhere.

u/Tu2 May 12 '24

Figures Atlanta gets first pick.. you donā€™t think theyā€™ll draft another qb right šŸ˜‚

NBA released a 78-player list for the 2024 Draft Combine in Chicago this month. Teams vote on participants, which include Bronny James.

New "Top 10 Players" ranked for which teams are able to access Combine information:

  1. Alexandre Sarr - Perth (Australia).

  2. Matas Buzelis - G League Ignite.

  3. Stephon Castle - Connecticut.

  4. Donovan Clingan - Connecticut .

  5. Zaccharie Risacher - Bourg (France).

  6. Nikola Topic - Crvena Zvezda (Serbia).

  7. Rob Dillingham - Kentucky.

  8. Ron Holland II - G League Ignite.

  9. Dalton Knecht - Tennessee.

  10. Reed Sheppard - Kentucky.

1

u/B00STERGOLD May 13 '24

I wouldn't say no to Topic or a Kentucky guard.

5

u/sarithe May 12 '24

I guess it's on the Holland train now. Dude is a legit defender already. I have shooting concerns, but those can be fixed. Decision making sometimes ain't the greatest, but he's young with a lot of potential.

11

u/hive-mind-jay May 12 '24

We all said MKGā€™s shooting could be fixed too.

4

u/ISISCosby May 13 '24

and tbf it kinda was until the rotator cuff injury.

You're never gonna be able to take a guy with form that shit and turn him into a sharpshooter, but he was hitting corner threes at a decent clip after working with Mark Price and before wrecking his shooting arm. Not much you can do after that.

2

u/Mike_Herp May 13 '24

I don't think MKG was ever hitting corner threes at a decent clip.
In the three seasons before his shoulder injuries, he hit 3 for 18.

In the 7 games he returned between the two shoulder injuries, he hit 3 for 7 in seven games.

In every season after those injuries, he was God awful from three except the 18-19 season, when he made 16 threes on 34% shooting. Dunno, I'd have to check whether he was ok from the corner that season, but that's still only 0.3 makes per game.

4

u/hankjr16 May 12 '24

Just be glad the bad luck came this lottery and not last years. Would love to see us pick up some more shooting and one of the Kentucky guys should be there at 6.

7

u/GranMaMa3 May 12 '24

My two favorite guys in this draft are Hilland and Knetch. I watched Knetch score 37 in the Dean Dome to almost carry the volunteers back to victory after being down 22 at the half. That guy had all the shots that night.

6

u/GranMaMa3 May 12 '24

Holland not Hilland

9

u/OwlPunch3 May 12 '24

Well hereā€™s hoping for Castle

3

u/JaLanimal May 12 '24

Hoping for Ron Holland

9

u/YoungFlexibleShawty May 12 '24

The lottery is idioticĀ

1

u/QCKingFya May 12 '24

I totally agree!!

5

u/DonKellyBaby32 May 12 '24

Good! Tanking or sucking shouldnā€™t be rewarded

4

u/Nytemaresxbl May 12 '24

I'd be fine with Holland, Castle or Clingsn if Mark isn't right still.

3

u/NotManyBuses May 12 '24

Iā€™m not a huge fan of Clingan tbh. But the other two would be obvious fits

-1

u/JaLanimal May 12 '24

Same. Gives me Frank Kaminsky flashbacks

10

u/SponsoredHornersFan May 12 '24

letā€™s just say at least weā€™re not the pistons

0

u/[deleted] May 13 '24

[deleted]

1

u/KtuluLoveCheese May 13 '24

Nah, they got Cade and have been actively tanking.

2

u/GoatSmall4495 May 12 '24

I canā€™t even say Iā€™m surprised

11

u/Titanstheory May 12 '24

Ehhhh. Anything we got in this draft was honestly a bonus, this was the draft to get screwed in.

17

u/BigAl_Toker May 12 '24

If there was a draft to drop its this one...but still damn

5

u/PestyAssassin33WU93 May 12 '24

Matas buzelis here we come

8

u/Beyard May 12 '24

I'm hoping Castle is at 6!

5

u/brandon4444smith May 12 '24

We got lucky to move up and get Lamelo and Brandon Miller. Both would be the number 1 pick in this draft. Have fun with James Wiseman 2.0 ATL.

4

u/st3ll4r-wind May 12 '24

Thank goodness we sat some of our players late so we could get theā€¦ 6th pick

6

u/spotty15 May 12 '24

Instead of playing our players late so we could get the... 6th or 7th pick...

4

u/unfamiliarjoe May 12 '24

I hope we trade this pick for a pick next year.

1

u/frippmemo May 12 '24

Thatā€™s my thought as well.

8

u/AidanH2007 May 12 '24

Didnā€™t atl make the play in? How tf? Absolutely bullshit who even gives a fuck about the god damn hawks

Wemby went to San Antonio, Zion went to New Orleans (New York had the worst record that year), itā€™s probably not rigged.

2

u/BetweenTheBuzzAndMe May 12 '24

i'll subscribe to that, but this draft isn't worth rigging whatsoever, and the lottery odds are such that the most likely scenario for the 3rd worst team in the league is the 6th pick.

I find it very hard to care about this draft however, I would only lament the perceived trade value lost between the 6th and 3rd picks.

2

u/devinbookersuncle May 12 '24

It's worth it if they can push more spurs and victor narrative which the nba absolutely will do. Good thing this is a "fit" draft vs a "bpa" draft

8

u/AttackSalad May 12 '24

relax man we moved up twice recently to get miller and lamelo

9

u/MrAtlantic May 12 '24

We moved up for ball and miller?

2

u/NoButterfly2642 May 12 '24

Lottery wise yes. We were projected to be lower in both of those drafts

4

u/MrAtlantic May 12 '24

Lol I know that, I am telling the guy who is saying "how many times are we going to get fucked by the lottery" that we recently moved up twice and got great players from it. The question was meant to be like a "????" sort of thing

1

u/NoButterfly2642 May 12 '24

Ahhh gotcha lol. Right over my head šŸ¤£

2

u/A2k704 May 12 '24

Is that Donavan clingham range?

1

u/Drak_is_Right May 12 '24

Maybe. 60/40 he is gone.

3

u/killacam03 May 12 '24

Lool we got hosed for Atlanta. They deserve it for the Penix pick

3

u/p0shbadger May 12 '24

Iā€™d be mad in ATL too buddy

7

u/sadiknowyeah May 12 '24

At least it wasnā€™t the spurs?

4

u/MrInfamousFish May 12 '24

True, but they also have two top 10 picks this year. if things pan out, they are going to be a force competing a lot sooner than expected with Wemby being built around.

6

u/brandon4444smith May 12 '24

I would rather the spurs then Atlanta

5

u/NotManyBuses May 12 '24

Letā€™s hope Sarr is the next Wiseman

6

u/YaboyChris28 May 12 '24

What a joke

11

u/NotManyBuses May 12 '24

Not the fucking hawks dude wtf

5

u/ImChz May 12 '24

Reed Sheppard/Dalton Knecht, you are a Charlotte Hornet lfg.

2

u/theRestisConfettii May 12 '24

Youā€™ve got to be kidding meā€¦

My gut reaction after falling 6th?

Reed Shephard or Donovan Clingan.

I donā€™t even care about how the top 4 are going to turn out. Iā€™m turning this shit offā€¦

7

u/realOGT92 May 12 '24

Well if we had to slide this is the draft to do it

8

u/spookyghostface May 12 '24

I'd be more upset if this draft wasn't gonna be a total crapshoot anyway.

0

u/mkashef51 May 12 '24

Hornets should have lost more games but they got what theyā€™ve got. Get ready for another under 30 win season unless they make a major trade.

4

u/p0shbadger May 12 '24

Rigged lottery allegations remain undefeated

5

u/OffTheRadar May 12 '24

Rigged for ATL??

1

u/Clappington May 12 '24

Letā€™s go Cody Williams

3

u/Jetflight88 May 12 '24

Dude is overrated

2

u/Clappington May 12 '24

Lengthy 3 and D wing what we need fits perfectly with Melo and Bmill

4

u/NotManyBuses May 12 '24

No no no not him

5

u/AidanH2007 May 12 '24

If the spurs win this shit again Iā€™m never watching the nba again

1

u/jaemoon7 May 12 '24

This is my first time watching, they really do the drawing behind closed doors? Why?

4

u/-YEETLEJUICE- May 12 '24

Itā€™s at least possible that they donā€™t show it so the order can be fucked with.Ā

Probably not, but I donā€™t see a reason to not show it unless you want the option to rig it.Ā

5

u/MrPeterson15 May 12 '24

They did it publicly in the past.

They do film it and you can watch the actual lotto after the fact. But agreed, donā€™t like how they do it now, should be live.

3

u/-YEETLEJUICE- May 12 '24

Do they? Why not just show it live?

7

u/MitchLGC May 12 '24

Spurs need another top pick. So yeah. Typical shit

0

u/IamOlderthanMe May 12 '24

MATAS

YOU ARE THE HORNET

2

u/NotManyBuses May 12 '24

Why? I donā€™t want him at all heā€™s the exact kind of player we donā€™t need more of

4

u/unfamiliarjoe May 12 '24

I thought for sure in a year with no star in the draft we would get the 1st pick. Iā€™m happy to be wrong. This is right where we need to pick this year, 4-6.

7

u/MrAtlantic May 12 '24

Lmao of course in a weak draft where there are about 4-5 players in the convo at the top, we get pick 6.

1

u/Babylon_Burning May 12 '24

Sarr, Topic, Clingan, Risacher, Castle, Sheppard are all guys Iā€™ve seen reputable draft analysts mock at #1. There are a few other guys that some outlets act like are ā€œin the mixā€ for #1 too like Dillingham, Williams, and Matas.

Which of these did you have in mind as the 4-5 we might miss on?

3

u/Able-Complaint-8674 May 12 '24

Well, at least weā€™re not Detroit.

5

u/p0shbadger May 12 '24

Fuck the spurs and pop, I hope they stay losing til heā€™s done

4

u/tatttattington May 12 '24

Castle or Holland then?

14

u/jaemoon7 May 12 '24

God what a let down, season was a wash from minute one and we donā€™t even get a good pick to compensate šŸ˜šŸ˜

9

u/muzunguman May 12 '24

Lol fuck the NBA. They're gonna give SA another top pick because they can't afford Wemby to be on a shitty team

10

u/Jetflight88 May 12 '24

Rather be #6 with this weak draft class

4

u/jaemoon7 May 12 '24

Iā€™d rather be 1 lol

3

u/NotManyBuses May 12 '24

Itā€™s not that bad in the grand scheme of things

1

u/Jetflight88 May 12 '24

Thereā€™s no consensus top draft prospect

22

u/NoButterfly2642 May 12 '24

Of course the Spurs just ā€œsneakā€ in to the top 4

12

u/SponsoredHornersFan May 12 '24

it couldnā€™t get more obvious whatā€™s going down

8

u/NoButterfly2642 May 12 '24

Two of the projected top 4 picks are French too šŸ˜‚

7

u/Giddf May 12 '24

REED SHEPPARD COME ON DOWN WWWWW

9

u/MrInfamousFish May 12 '24

Honestly if we were to fall, this is the draft to do it

2

u/Longjumping-Check429 May 12 '24

But we canā€™t afford to. Remember a lot of our players this season werenā€™t even NBA bench level. We need every new player we can get.

1

u/MrInfamousFish May 12 '24

I think with the offseason with us potentially making some moves around our bench, it will be better than last year. With Charles coming in, we will see some of our younger players step up as they buy in to the culture that he is trying to build. We have a lot of talent, even on the bench, itā€™s about utilization at this point.

1

u/Longjumping-Check429 May 12 '24

Other than Brandon, Melo and Tre Mann what other good young players do we have that can step up?

Mark Williams is a 7 footer with season ending back problems and Nick smith jr seems years away.

9

u/p0shbadger May 12 '24

6th, are you fucking joking bro lmao

9

u/net_403 May 12 '24

well shit we fell 3

6

u/WafflesTheWookiee May 12 '24

BULLSHIT. 6TH?!?!?! ROBBED

18

u/MrPeterson15 May 12 '24

They do everything on this broadcast but the lottery itself lol.

Every year I forget how annoying the lotto broadcast is.

2

u/philjacksonspeyote May 12 '24

Hopefully we stay in the top 4. Although I donā€™t think the difference between 4 and 7 is that massive.

-4

u/Beyard May 12 '24

Here from the future, we got #1!! Niceee

3

u/Jaymore1946 May 12 '24

Our dynasty fantasy football is sorted out by the NBA lottery so I have the Hornets! LFGGGGG

I promise if yall win it Iā€™ll wear a Kemba hornets jersey to a game this year

2

u/top5skii May 12 '24

if we get a top 5 pick, who yall think we should go for?

1

u/philjacksonspeyote May 12 '24

Sarr/Risacher/Castle/Holland would all fit nicely

1

u/top5skii May 13 '24

i like the idea of us landing sarr too!!

4

u/MrPeterson15 May 12 '24

BPA. We arenā€™t good enough to do anything else.

9

u/cdirty1 May 12 '24

One pick away from Shaq, Dwight, and AD. This is 100% the year the script writers allow Charlotte the #1

6

u/Decimate_2K May 12 '24

Don't forget missing out on wemby

5

u/cdirty1 May 12 '24

Youā€™re right although BMilli will be the definitive goat of his generation and itā€™s not up for debate!

1

u/Practical_Cap_7398 May 12 '24

If we lose out on sarr. Do you think Matas Buzelis could be a pick to bring sone offense and length to the forward position?

1

u/Prudent_Web2867 May 12 '24

Yes. Number 3 on my board.

7

u/GranMaMa3 May 12 '24

I would like the new ownership/staff to have the choice of whatever player they want to build around. Get that #1.

10

u/issofine May 12 '24

Just woke up and simmed the lottery, got #2. Iā€™ll take it.

2

u/Bread_Responsible May 12 '24

You mean hornets #1?

1

u/stupididity May 12 '24

Yeah it was Hornets with the first pick, then u/issofine with the second pick

2

u/Bread_Responsible May 12 '24

I mean the hornets #1 like thatā€™s our number one since we never actually get number 1

14

u/dkirk526 May 12 '24

I just ran the tankathon lotto simulator and got 6th or 7th 5 straight times. You guys can thank me later for using up all of our bad luck.

4

u/Binh3 May 12 '24

Dude. This is your fault. You sim'd it into existence.

1

u/dkirk526 May 12 '24

Tankathon mustā€™ve really knew ahead of time

9

u/Amazing_Owl3026 May 12 '24

Why is everyone talking about getting a PF? do we really trust Miller or Melo to lock down guards like Fox or Kyrie? I think Miller has great 2 way potential but he's also 6'8 he should play SF

2

u/marz1789 May 12 '24

Or we could stop playing small like we have the past 15 years and just put miller at the 2 and have a modern day large lineup

2

u/Amazing_Owl3026 May 12 '24

Having a single player under 6'7 isn't playing small, also the reason u want to be big is for defense

3

u/marz1789 May 12 '24

Miller is a good defender

5

u/skadoosh0019 May 12 '24

Letā€™s be real - we need to draft BPA no matter what the position. Weā€™re not deep enough or talented enough to make determinations strictly on position.

That being said, if we get a shot at Sarr, heā€™s widely considered the best in this class and is a PF/C and is especially talented defensively. With Mark Williams struggling to stay on the floor the past 2 years AND the potential fit on the floor AND our need for defensive help pretty much everywhere, seems like a no-brainer if we get a shot at him.

8

u/a_moniker May 12 '24

Why is everyone talking about getting a PF?

Because the best prospect in this draft is a PF/C. Sarr also has quickness and length to be able to defend SF/PF/C, and a Mark+Sarr front-court would completely shut down the paint.

The teamā€™s biggest need is also at SF/PF, cause thatā€™s where we lack any real depth at those positions. After the trade deadline, we have good depth at Guard, with LaMelo, Miller, Mann, Micic, and Curry able to play those positions. At the forward positions (SF/PF) we only have Miller, Miles [pending FA], and Grant (who can only really play PF) capable of playing NBA level minutes. If we donā€™t re-sign Miles (which is very possible since we donā€™t have bird rights), then weā€™d be forced to rely a ton on guys like Thor, McGowans, and Poku to take a huge leap.

Additionally, both LaMelo and Miller would have a much easier time defending the perimeter if they knew that Mark and Sarr were shutting down the paint behind them.

LaMelo, Miller, [a 3&D SG/SF], Sarr, and Mark would be a dynamic 2-way lineup, particularly if Sarr eventually develops into an even passable shooter (~35% 3PT), which I believe he has a good chance to do.

I think Miller has great 2 way potential but heā€™s also 6ā€™8 he should play SF

These playoffs have really shown how necessary it is to have big, athletic, switchable players all over the court:

  • Conley is the oniy rotation player shorter than 6ā€™5ā€ on the Wolves
  • Everyone in the Thunderā€™s starting lineup is at least 6ā€™6ā€
  • The Magic ran lineups with 4+ 6ā€™9ā€+ forwards playing together (Paolo, Franz, Isaac, WCJr, Moritz, etc)

Having a backcourt with a 6ā€™6ā€ PG (LaMelo) and a 6ā€™7ā€ SG (Miller) would go a long way towards building a versatile team.

Most of Millerā€™s biggest issues on defense were also related to his lack of strength, which means heā€™s probably better suited to defend Guards at this point in his career.

3

u/JayJonah-EXILE May 12 '24 edited May 12 '24

The team's biggest need is perimeter defense, not a forward, especially when they already have Bridges, Grant & Miller. All those backup guards around 6'3 doesn't help that so it doesn't matter how many players we have there if none of them can defend the perimeter. Sure, Miller can play SG but that's not what he's best at, he's a natural SF who's also a good rim protector. Play him where he's best at & draft a TALL SG who can play perimeter defense.

1

u/butekoo May 12 '24

It's funny when people use the league currently but completely ignore that: 1) it's full of amazing scoring guards (Hali, Brunson, Mitchell, Jamal, Curry, Ant, Maxey, Luka and Shai), 2) every defense starts with amazing point of attack defense (Suggs, Caruso, Herb Jones, Holiday & White, Dort, KCP, NAW & McDaniels), and 3) clearly it's far better to project those project bigs as C (Embiid, Wemby and Chet) instead of PFs (JJJ and Mobley).

1

u/BizzaroMatthews May 12 '24

Curious, whoā€™d you pick if we end up with #1?

1

u/JayJonah-EXILE May 12 '24

Welp, dropped from 3rd to 6th; Draft Gods showed us no love. Drafting that low means Topic, Clingan & Sarr are off the table, probably Castle & Holland too. Can't wait to see what these mock drafts say now...

2

u/BizzaroMatthews May 12 '24

Brutal lmao. I think theyā€™ll go with Holland, Castle, or even Knecht.

1

u/JayJonah-EXILE May 12 '24

From what I see on the mock drafts, it seems like Sarr is the consensus #1. If the Hornets are fortunate enough to acquire the #1 pick, I believe they would be forced to draft him even if that's not the main need of the team. They would have to make that work, and I can't be mad at that. But if that's not the case, I would go with Stephon Castle. If they're super unfortunate & fall in the draft (I hope not) then I would go with Ron Holland if he's available. But I TOTALLY disagree with drafting another PG in Topic who doesn't play defense or drafting Clingan at C when we already have Williams, Richards & Nnaji over seas (Clingan reminds me of when they drafted Cody Zeller & Frank Kaminsky, smh).

2

u/chlorinetablet May 12 '24

+1 my exact thoughts but communicated much better.

0

u/Amazing_Owl3026 May 12 '24

I mean Sarr is very unlikely considering we basically need the 1st pick to have a chance but even then I don't like his fit next to Mark offensively. If we get number 1 and pick Sarr I'll be fine with it tho.

Miller got blown by a lot this year too, he's a rookie so it's forgivable but his best defense was chasedown blocks and stuff he hasn't flashed that much real defensive 1 on 1 ability.

It's a weak draft so I'll live with any pick but I don't think getting a 4 is a priority rn

3

u/butekoo May 12 '24

I'm 100% with you on the point about Melo and Miller in the backcourt, but In theory you can still draft a forward and care about bringing that defensive minded guard later. With that being said, I personally like Williams and Castle more than any of the potentially good 4s on the class.

3

u/Amazing_Owl3026 May 12 '24

Well ye your right, even tho I'm very much a long term mindset fan even I get impatient lol. I'll be happy if we draft either of those two but being a non shooter under 7 foot is the biggest red flag for me. I love everything about Castle outside of that but it's such a big deal for me. We'll see where we at after the lottery ig

2

u/butekoo May 12 '24

Yeah if we were making the first pick of a rebuild I would stay very far away from Castle, but considering we already have a 3 man young core that we can be hopeful about and that every prospect at the top have major flaws this year, it's fine to prior fit this time

1

u/Amazing_Owl3026 May 12 '24

Ye, but when I compare him and Sheppard I just think Sheppard is so much better. I mean he's the best shooter in years, if only he was like 6'6

3

u/butekoo May 12 '24

I agree, I have Reed #1. Just don't want to die on that hll since I think he'll be overlooked and not even considered by us.

2

u/Amazing_Owl3026 May 12 '24

Reed #1 on ur big board? That's a super hot take but I fw it. I still wouldn't go so far but he's around #3 for me.

New FO so it's really impossible to say what Jeff wants to do, ima trust him until he gives me reason not to.

2

u/LUUUUUUUUUUKEEE May 12 '24

Because weā€™d be giving up the size advantage by taking a smaller guard. But if any guy can play that defensive role it might be Reed Sheppard

1

u/Amazing_Owl3026 May 12 '24

Reed is the only small one even available and he can guard, probably not the type of defense we need tho he's not great for POA. Castle would give is an even bigger size advantage but I would never want to draft a non shooter top 5

4

u/theRestisConfettii May 12 '24 edited May 12 '24

Iā€™m sure weā€™ll all make up our minds as the lottery passes and the draft gets closer, but my initial thoughts are that this team needs a front court identity.

Size-Spacing-Shooting-Defense, preferably out of the starting PF position.

Alex Sarr seems like that guy. He just needs to develop a shot.

7

u/a_moniker May 12 '24

These playoffs have really shown how critical a player like Sarr can be for a young team:

  • The Wolves are built around a twin tower lineup, and a Center in Gobert who has the quickness/size to defend out on the perimeter for stretches
  • OKCā€™s defense is anchored by lanky and athletic 7-footer in Chet
  • The Magic defense was built around playing 2-4 6ā€™9ā€+ guys together on the floor at once (Paolo, Franz, Isaac, and WCJr)
  • The Cavs have made it to the second round with a defensive duo of Allen+Mobley
  • The Celtics defense is built around a Porzingis/Horford/Tatum front-court

Basically every team thatā€™s advanced in the playoffs has a lot of size and versatility

Regardless of order, all I want is a solid pick for PF. Size and shooting, even if it takes a couple of seasons.

Hes projected number #1 pick :/

Welp, you heard it here first. We have the first pick. ;)

Side note, have you seen DaRon Holmes? I know he's at the back end of the first round, but he's the other PF/C I'm curious about.

I like Daron a lot, the reason he is so low is that hes so raw, while being 21. I think he could carve out as a role player or borderline starter if a team banks on his potential. I dont see him being considered by the hornets but he is intriguing

Likewise. If we were to trade back for player(s) or draft capital I would love to see DaRon here. If you havenā€™t already take a look at this workout video. The takeaway I got from it was he has a slow wind up/release. Disclosure, I know nothing about evaluating players.

Holmes was very likely the 2nd or 3rd best player in college last year, how is he raw lol

u/Babylon_Burning May 12 '24

Yeah, thatā€™s like the complete opposite of Holmesā€™ draft profile. Scouts seem worried he may have less ā€œceilingā€.

Honestly think he's the 3rd best big in the class

Anything top 4 Iā€™m happyā€¦ Iā€™m not losing my mind if we donā€™t get 1 in this draft. Just please donā€™t have a huge drop šŸ™šŸ¤ž

I would say "Let's get number 1!" but I'm this draft I just want not 6 or 7
